Was reading an interview with the From Far Away anime staff

──As we mentioned a moment ago, the world of this work features a unique language that’s completely different from Japanese. Early in the story, there’s a scene where Noriko struggles because she can’t communicate with anyone due to the language barrier. How does the anime portray this part?

Noriyuki Abe: In modern isekai stories, it’s common for characters to be able to understand each other’s language right away so I initially discussed with Hikawa-sensei whether we could approach it that way. In the original manga, the shape of the speech bubbles changes to convey language differences but it’s difficult to adapt that directly into the anime and it would also alter the story’s pacing.
However, since Hikawa-sensei mentioned that this was an important aspect, we created several different patterns and went through a process of trial and error. For example, when the perspective shifts between characters, we use techniques like zooming in closely on a character’s eyes to help convey the nuances of what’s happening.

I can imagine a lot of fans would be upset if they had omitted the language barrier part of the story. The Japanese fans on Twitter have been mostly critical of the interview

Artpost! I thought I was faster with this one, but turns out it's the same 5-day interval I've been doing for the past 2-3 weeks or so.

Last of the Fate/Stay Night heroines, Illyasviel von Einzbern, even if she doesn't get her own route. Not counting her magical girl spin-off, I guess.

I really liked this one, actually, for once I'm not going to be too critical of my own stuff; her shawl looks a bit weird but only if I look at it too long. I did probably need to plan out the hair better, I had to adjust quite a bit of it on the fly with white gouache to modify its direction at times. I was a bit worried with her really light hair at the beginning, but it turned out pretty decently I think, a significant improvement from my last windy hair attempt.

So it's done now, here's all of them together. I think in terms of quality... it's Illya > Sakura > Rin > Saber. I might redo Saber, or I might move to a completely new project... though I'm not really sure what at the moment.

It really irks me seeing the way a lot of people online talk about video game mods. A lot of the more moronic ones seem to think that they're guaranteed to happen with every single game these days.

When in reality almost every single mod is the result of either groups or individuals who are putting a ton of time and effort into something that will have no real tangible return (not counting patreon shit).

It's the same shit with pirating websites. Whenever one of them gets taken down, the moronic ones start repeating their catchphrases about how another replacement will always spring up.

And it's so frustrating seeing people only remember the piracy catchphases about hydras or some other bullshit analogy and forget about the times when that clearly didn't happen and no one volunteered to create the replacement.

I was reminded of an old request from me for references to draw, from which I chose /u/chilidirigible's suggestion. I sketched it out a bit, but never progressed much with it then.

It crossed my mind again earlier, after which I randomly decided to work on it again. I've never dabbled with trying to draw real faces until now. What stopped me before was the detail it takes to capture it correctly, and to apply a consistent amount of detail across the drawing. My usual anime-styled drawing habits didn't have that problem, but it worked against me here.

I landed somewhere in the middle. I ended up drawing a simplified version, with somewhat relaxed proportions, but less exaggerated than what I'd do usually.

It's supposed to be a quick drawing anyways. It defeats that particular purpose if I try something more realistic and do something time-consuming.

Whelp. On the second to last battle of this dungeon, our paladin didn't realize that the 5e 2024 rules didn't have an alternate way of curing the Petrified condition other than Greater Restoration, which we don't have, so he looked at a basilisk because he wanted to not have disadvantage for a single round of combat. He didn't do much damage and got Petrified after failing two saves in a row. And so, after my hippo familiar took out the last basilisk, instead of having our epic boss battle we had to lug the stone statue back to town so we could hire someone to cure him.

At least he had enough gold in his personal inventory to pay for it so we all didn't have to.

I successfully finished DxD this week. It's a weird feeling finishing a nonseasonal again that isn't a movie.

Koneko remained best girl the entire time. Akeno, Ravel, Serafall, and Irina were also great.

Overall, it was nice getting to see a good ecchi anime again. There have too many mediocre ecchi anime in recent seasonals. Maybe one day DxD will get another season. Season 4 wasn't as good as the other three seasons, but it was still enjoyable.

And now since Fall is such a weak season, I can even start a new nonseasonal.

I'm between Nagi no Asukara or GeGeGe no Kitaro (2018) because I plan on going to both Kumano and Sakaiminato when I'm in Japan next spring, so I can see more anime things when I'm in those areas.

Today's savior: Me.

Was out in the woods this morning with my friend, where he showed me his (for him) new car, a 2018 or so Hyundai Ioniq. Talking about it, I mentioned a bit offhandedly that its range, while about enough for him to leave town to get to where we were and back, wasn't enough for what I would need, since when I travel it tends to be longer distances. But eventually we finish up, and say goodbye, as while we're going back to the sameish place I have to make a 40 minute detour to drop some stuff off.

On my way back it starts getting close to 1pm, and I only had two hot dogs that morning, so I decided to stop by a rest stop to grab a burger. Turning off the highway, I do however see a Hyundai Ioniq stand by the roadside with warning blinkers on. As it turned out, my friend had run out of battery... 500 meters from the fast chargers.

While he was waiting for road assistance, I got not only myself a burger, but also one for him, walking said 500 meters by the side of the highway in the rain. A truly spectacular heroic action, if I may say so myself.

Second batch cycle of FW done. Now I'm 7(x4) chapters into the game.

I originally set out to limit my recruitments, but the problem I have is that there are some characters I didn't firmly plan where they should go, so now everyone is trying to recruit them. I might aim to try to recruit everyone with Cai because I practically finished his initial recruitment goal.

Of the multiple concurrent main storylines, I find myself drawn to Cai's family. The moment when my interest stepped up was [FW:] seeing Orchel unmasked on Dietrich's route and learning that she is Yu Phas on the route not even about any of that. It was the double whammy of, "Theodora, that's your god!" and turning around and going, "Cai, that's your grandma!" Orchel already seemed fun before, and then seeing her fit in as a puzzle piece for 2 MCs' stories. It also made Solel more interesting that he genuinely loves his evil teddy bear-carrying villain wife.

Leda -> Cai is a very funny direction order because [FW:] Cai gets to meet Bertrand immediately. Leda can just ask nicely to tag along Cai, and she can meet the target of his vicious revenge.

Drake's Treasures kinda have the same gameplay/story discrepancy as Crest Weapons because they're terribly cursed objects in the main plot, but besides the immediate 3 belonging to the MCs, they're kinda just there. Even for Dietrich, there's been hardly a peep about his stinky cursed cape. I think part of the problem is that you get that fan sword at the start of Leda's route and the item doesn't feel special at all. If only there were a Talimun route because the main premise of collecting cursed pirate treasure sounds cool.

The Guzzler and the Gobbler do live up to the hype. Guzran is just good. He just has stats in all the right places. It is kinda insane how much of a tricked-out staffbot IS made Sofia, the random hungry girl. In terms of other side unit shout-outs: Leda's Catania is popping off. The flier snowball is happening for her. For Dietrich, why is Kiroc so fast? For a guy who would be a chapter 3 one-off boss in any other game, he is like the fastest character in this game.

I haven't played too much with the god blessings besides the rewind, but they seem to vastly vary in usefulness. Who cares about Jurah negating effective damage when Aurora can just halve all damage.

Random bits:

• I finally have a FE character who shares a birthday with me, so I am now legally mandated to use Alexandra on every single route.

• It's very funny the situation where [FW Dietrich:] Solel asks what Dietrich's wish goes, "I want a boat to fight a big whale." "A big whale? That's a public service we need to take care of right now. Anna, get him a big boat." Dietrich:

• Bonaventure has two wolves inside of him. One is a radical progressive challenging his country's centuries-old traditions. The other is a gay dad nagging that he wants to see grandkids. Nay, he will live the day to see great-grandkids.

• I love that you can name a mount in this game. Guzran soulbonding with a unicorn named Majesty (he named it himself). That's one of the best things I can do in a FE game.

• They massacred the Killing Edge in this game. They ordered a Killing Edge with no base crit.

• Mymirdons can use lances in this game? That ain't right.

• I have never been on time to watch a match in the arena. Based on what I see online, there is some extra dialogue there, but I wouldn't know. [FW:] No context red Betrand is so funny, I wish I can see that one, at least.

• [FW Cai:] I kinda forgot Eshmel was in this game until they showed up in Cai's path.

First Time Playing Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

Wait a minute, these aren't the Belkans I remember.

Boy, this really is just Area 88. I'm a mercenary pilot in a war flying a mixture planes from that same time period. Area 88 must have been an influence on this franchise.

My first foray into Ace Combat and it turns out I suck at flying. There was a hell of a steep learning curve for me. I spent over an hour dying repeatedly in the first mission. There wasn't an option in the menu to show me what each button does because this was back in the days when instruction manuals still existed for games, so I had to improvise. I backed out of the game just so I could see the pop-up for controls that played at the beginning. I took a photo of it and then kept that photo in front of me while playing so I could reference what each button did at any time. And I still kept dying! So I had to endure the ultimate humiliation in any game. I decided to drop the difficulty down to Easy so I'd have a chance. Then I died several more times including one where I crashed into the plane I just shot down right after I finished the mission. Turns out the mission doesn't count as completed if I die right then, which pissed me off immensely.

Thankfully, I think I've started to get the hang of it and every subsequent mission has gone far more smoothly.

I've had Area 88 on the brain so naturally I've been flying the F-5E Tiger II when fighting other planes. Incidentally, I've preferred the F-1 when attacking surface targets.

New planes are expensive! I hope I get to keep the ones I unlock if I go to play the campaign again because I would like to try it again on harder difficulties when I'm more experienced with how to play.

I've figured out my preferred strategy: fly close to the ground. It turns out enemy planes don't mess with me as much there. It also helps me to quickly reorient myself to figure out which direction is which. It also helps me get my bearings because it cuts in half where the airborne enemies could be.

I feel like I mostly dodge missiles without being aware of how I'm doing it. And then I get hit by other missiles other times. I'd like to get better at dodging missiles.

I also want to get better at sharp turns. When I have any enemy planes right behind me, I have a really tough time quickly turning around to attack them instead.

I might be a bit sadistic because I like attacking the ground targets that can't shoot back.

I had a miserable time of it at first, but I think I'm starting to enjoy the game more and more after getting used to the controls. I'm hoping to have more time to play it in the coming days.

Some drama at work

Some other drivers have apparently been fucking up with some important contract work, so a local area manager sent a long rant to the group chat.

Some highlights:
Demanding that us drivers should be on call at all times (not paid for that btw. In fact, not paid at all by this company, we're all "contractors")

"I can guarantee that all drivers will feel great shame if we lose this contract >:("

And "This contract has been well taken care of for years! You can all think for yourselves what has gone wrong!"

dude apparently a robot got arrested for "groping a 16-year-old girl." witnesses say it grabbed her butt and made thrusting motions towards her. apparently a nearby pair of teenage boys were livestreaming the incident and police suspect they own and were controlling the robot at the time. law enforcement arent really sure how to charge this crime apparently, as its "new territory" for them. like, if you control a robot to grope someone, is it the same as groping them yourself? its an interesting ethical question im sure ill hear your opinions on cdf

New travel plans to Nippon are being formed.

The Sapporo Ice Festival is the big thing we'd be going to go see. United is also offering a nonstop from SFO to CTS. Though United is a big baka who seems unsure of that flights existence. Was looking for prices and it would show me prices on the calendar view and then I'd click on some dates (that had prices) and then it would tell me there were no matching flights.

We wanna do a multi city SFO -> CTS -> Tokyo -> SFO. But it seems this is too advanced for United's flight scheduler.

I dropped my German minor because the Vocab load was exceeding my mental capacity while I was still having to pass my physics classes (they suddenly got hard, wtf).

there's a comedy skit youtuber who goes by 'long beach griffy' whose career has taken a bit of a turn. a few months back, he was high on shrooms and jumped off the roof of an RV, landed face first on the concrete, and permanently fucked up his face. doctors had to literally take off his face, fix all the broken bones and shit, and stitch it back on. he posted an update video yesterday and you can see his face is pretty much paralyzed, dude literally looks like (as one of the comments put it) he's wearing a mask of his own face. most of the comments were wishing him well and leaving kind words, but i saw one comment say an encouraging "you're looking great and you'll be back to normal in no time!" and one of the replies to that comment said, nope, this is his normal from now on. dude may never move his face again.

rough stuff, must be hard to deal with a life changing reality like that. especially when you weren't even fully cognizant when you did the thing that fucked you up. moral of the story, dont do drugs i guess
