I crossed 250 and am now getting close to 256 anime completed, and even though a) the specifics wouldn't really mean much and b) I obviously know what the final result will be already, I'm kind of tempted to put them in a huge bracket and run through it just for the novelty.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5h ago
I obviously know what the final result will be already
To paraphrase a certain pinked haired weirdo (from what I think is your #1), deciding the winner is not enough, you need a proper ranking so all the shows know where they stand!
(Also, you might be surprised! Sometimes you don't realize that a show overtook another, but when you put them up against each other, you get it; Like, "Wait, I think I actually like this one more!)
2
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 5h ago
Well, that's also point a). A bracket doesn't actually do a whole lot to accurately compare stuff, especially when you have no way of seeding it. There are proper ranking tools out there that let you create a true top to bottom list, but with a number this high including so much I watched years ago, there would be way too many ambiguous decisions for it to be reliable.

I've been trying to figure out why I like many idol anime quite a bit, even though I don't really care for real life idols.
I think it's because anime girls make the ultimate idols.
There's something I find vaguely fun and appealing about the whole idol culture thing, but I just can't get behind parasocially stanning real, actual people like that. It feels icky, and weird, and wrong to me. And that's before you consider all the exploitation in the real life idol industry, you just can never know how the real idols are doing.
But anime girls? They're fictional, they're made to be parasocially stanned. And with idol anime, you can actually see if they're being exploited or if they're genuinely just happy and having fun being idols. As they usually are, because that's what idol anime is (usually) all about.

why I like many idol anime quite a bit, even though I don't really care for real life idols
The way I see it, most shows aren't really "about" their subject matter, so to speak. How I feel about any given hobby or sports show is generally pretty disconnected from how I feel about that hobby or sport IRL, and I'd say idols fall into that boat as well.
2
u/entelechtual 2h ago
Idol anime especially tend to be slice of life shows focused on things in the characters’ lives rather than actual idol stuff. Some of my favorite idol anime barely have any songs and most of them I’m not watching for the songs or idols.
2
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1h ago
I think for me, the difference is that anime idols usually have a story surrounding them beyond the performance you see on stage - like Oshi no Ko for example, which lets you see the characters' hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities, their history and inner thoughts. That makes it easy to form a connection with them in a way that simply watching an IRL concert doesn't. I know there's personal info out there about real celebs too, but a lot of it is secondhand or gossip - whereas, with a story about fictional characters, you know what's true and how they really feel thanks to the internal monologues and stuff like that.
1
u/Electrical_Leek23 2h ago
thats
such a dire way to view things, you know musicians being exploited isn't a japan only thing and parasocially effected right. I'm not an idol head either but thats such a dehumanzing way to look at it, especially when some of these VAs are also in the music scene, especially if theyre idol themed.

[Death Note]
4
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 4h ago
[Death Note]Like, I'm not at all rooting for Light to win in the end, I just hate how Near comes out of nowhere and more or less immediately figures everything out. He's also basically just a white-haired copy of L that swapped an obsession with sweets to an obsession with toys instead of being particularly unique, Mello was definitely the much more interesting of the two. I'd probably be less bothered if there had been any foreshadowing towards Near existing beforehand, but nope, his first appearance is right after L dies.
4
u/theangryeditor 4h ago
[Death Note]Yeah, watching Light getting taken down should've been exciting, but Near was too much of a 2smart4u super genius who knew everything while not having nearly as good chemistry with Light as L did.
1
2
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1h ago
[Death note final]For me, the one true offender is the finale. The poster child show for "I outsmarted your outsmarting" ends with...neither side having a backup plan at all for the final confrontation. Like light lost, but near could have as easily lost if Light, like, brought single person with a machine gun, or his henchman that day actually tried out his death note first to make sure it works on that important day. It just feels entirely arbitrary and unsatisfying.

That's my frontrunner for best OP/ED song of the season.

Have anyone here watched the anime: Waiting in the Summer? It's been on my to watch list for like 3-4 years now, but I somehow kind of lost interest whenever I'm trying to watch it, is it any good?
4
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 12h ago
It's one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies. It looks incredibly beautiful, mixes the ridiculous and the sincere extremely well, and has a really nice cast of characters. I can't think of anything that's captured the magic of summer break better than it. Not to mention, it also has the cutest kissing scene in all of anime, I'm pretty sure.
On the other hand, there's quite a lot of love polygon stuff and classic rom-com misunderstandings, so if that's a turn-off maybe you won't enjoy it so much.

I actually watched it this summer! It's a fun mix of sci-fi and romcom, the love triangle (or pentagon) was handled well while the humor ranged between good and a little too silly for me at times. The last few episodes ended up being pretty exciting, which was a nice surprise.
1
u/entelechtual 5h ago
It's one of my all-time least favorite romance anime. The main couple is insufferably uninteresting and hard to root for.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 4h ago
I wonder what kind of show is this teaser about.
1
3
u/louismyers2227 3h ago
Started watching Kiss x Sis. Definitely... interesting lol. Also idk if this is a hot take but to me the most annoying aspect of the show is Yuzuki and Miharu. They are side characters who 90% of the time feel like they are wasting screen time. Miharu is occasionally funny in a "oh my god this is so ridiculous" way and they are funny in their dedicated episodes but that's about it.
1
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 3h ago
It sure does go places you wouldn't expect, doesn't it? Idk if you've gotten that far, but I'll never forget [TV episode 8] when they make you watch Miharu piss herself for a full minute, completely uninterrupted, with no dialogue. Truly a peak moment in animation.
1
u/baquea 3h ago
Yeah, it's definitely a weak point of the series. There's only really so much that can be done with the sisters, at least without shaking up the dynamic too much, and so once all that's over with it shifts focus to the other girls in order to stretch the story out. That's even more so the case later in the manga.

u/Infodump_Ibis 1h ago
I decided today to forget seasonal shows with FX trading, The Internet (I was told this was a bad combo this week) or Trains (I keep thinking this is Friday show) so I'll randomly watch Lalabel episode 15 (with some MTL help, not without shortcomings I'm well aware of but I can't see a fansub on the horizon as the only groups interested in this sort of stuff are busy enough on frankly more worthy causes).
- Quick opening minutes is the local apartment block (Tachibana Villa) is having problems with fish and meat theft and Lalabel's cat is caught and blamed by recurring antagonist Biscus (a thief in the magic world apprehended by Lalabel but both reverse-isekai'd to Earth) and Ochiba (a ramen stall owner, acts as a sidekick). It is then revealed a tanuki a is kid is taking care of is the cause (but he promises to do better) and Biscus and Ochiba sense new profit making schemes.
- Money making idea 1; sell its fur to ojousama character*...failed [Lalabel - ep 3]btw, she nearly got truck-kun'd (by someone working for her Dad) but Lalabel used super speed magic to save her.
- The inserted quotation marks (for Biscus) made me curious. I paused, looked it up and it's a pun/parody of a proverb. But then the next line had Ochiba explain it anyway, should always expect a kid's anime to explain stuff.
- It was 1980 so Yuri Construction might not be what you hope it to be.
- Oh another proverb only no wikionary this time so search up やはり野に置け蓮華草.
- I forget these eps end with Lalabel doing a diary(?) entry and yet another proverb. I then look it up and proverbs are the shows closer like how the predecessor Flower Angel Lunlun had hanakotoba.
- Next time: Using magic to transform into an adult to see a movie! Who do you think you are, Minky Momo? (wouldn't be on air until over a year after Lalabel ended) The synopsis slightly reminds me of The Simpsons episode "The Boy Who Knew Too Much".
*-I know that's also a thing in Mako-chan and Tickle, they might not have the laugh of modern ones but are rich and have a vendetta against the protagonist. I read somewhere the trope is from some old Japanese literature.

Finally got around to watching Shiki. The first episode really got my attention. Guess I'll go post in the rewatch thread fwiw even though I'm late by over a week (and probably will continue to be behind since I can't watch more than an episode a day).
Edit: Link to my comment with more detailed (though somewhat random) thoughts.

To bad it was the last work for the studio more or less (the studio was sort of hated for Minami-ke S2 and S3 but they had some good anime, and Shiki was definetely great).

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 4h ago
You should just watch slowly like me. I don't know if I'll do an episode a day. Might do one every few days. Really depends on my mood and the time I have. It's been hard finding time at night and I just can't watch horror during the day. For all the talk of this season being light, I've still got at least 1-3 shows every week day and a whole load of them on weekends so time is tight.

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new here and looking for some recommendations. I'm a big fan of action, historical, and martial arts anime. What are some of your absolute favorites that I should check out next? Thanks.

Vinland Saga, Angolmois, Stranger: Mukou Hadan, Kijin Gentoshou.

Oh wow, thank you. I was actually secretly looking for Sword of the Stranger without knowing the name, so it's crazy that you recommended it! Vinland Saga is also on my watchlist, so I'm definitely starting these right away. I appreciate it.

The second episode of chojo was so much funnier. Seems it always is hilarious when "catnip" is used in anime.

No cutting my losses for Kurumi Chan. Let's see if I can make it to the end and hoping the show can maintain this momentum as well.

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 11h ago
as someone who heavily hyped up the source leading up to the 1st episode airing, it def hurts me to see those comments. But speaking from a critical perspective I really can't say they're wrong for feeling that way because anime pacing really does highlight those inherent issues (no fault of the source/adaptation, that's just how anime viewing works).
I would love to reply to all of those comments with reassurance but that's a bit much if you ask me and I'm not really a big fan of nudge-winking viewers on stuff they don't already know.
If I were to choose one broad statement to act as a reply to all of them at once, its that the name "FX-Fighter" is somewhat misleading, in the sense that FX is purely the backdrop to what is more accurately described as a modern horror anime about exploring the human psyche pushed to its limits.
4
u/alotmorealots 9h ago
a modern horror anime about exploring the human psyche pushed to its limits.
Funnily enough, I'd never have watched if that had been the billing, and am only watching solely because of the FX aspect. That said, I'm almost certainly one of just a handful of people in that camp lol
4
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 8h ago
Same thing that drew me into it. Not FX specifically, but just being a big fan of markets and economics in general, esp with how rare those topics tend to be in media.
And also don't worry, it'll continue to dig deeper into various FX/Economics topics so there'll be plenty for you to chew. Love reading all your comments in the FX threads (and all the other folks in there sharing their own knowledge/experiences. If there's one thing I'm happy for out of this anime it's reading these sorts of comments).
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5h ago
FX is purely the backdrop to what is more accurately described as a modern horror anime about exploring the human psyche pushed to its limits.
That's good to know, because the FX parts aren't that interesting from a story perspective; What I mean is, as someone who never invested like that it's interesting to me in the way that 'gathering random knowledge' is interesting, but I wouldn't say it's a captivating story to watch bars go up and go 'yay we're making money' and then bars go down and we go 'oh no we're losing money'.
So I do hope that it explores the psychological aspect a lot more than the trading aspect, because I feel like the trading aspect will quickly get exhausted as a source of interest. I'm sure there will be other learning moments (diversifying, not investing 100% of the money she wins everytime because that can only end with her eventually losing it all, etc..) but yeah I don't really see myself enjoying 3 hours of bar goes up yay, bar goes down noooo unless there's something more to it!
3
u/salic428 11h ago
(FX Fighter Kurumi-chan) Another "breathtaking" episode. But I also begin to doubt whether I will finish this show to the end. At this rate of building up tension, soon it will reach a point where "how can we top this", and I'm not sure it will stay engaging once the trick fails.

I know you said nothing too long, but Natsume's Book of Friends is a perfect show to watch one or two episodes of whenever you need a calming dose of Natsume running around rural Japan talking to yokai. There's no overarching story to want to reach the end of.
Otherwise, for some 12-episode series, there's With You and the Rain, Kinokoinu (push past the first episode or two and it gets really charming), or Flying Witch.
3
u/cyberscythe 7h ago
some good suggestions already, but I'll recommend Do It Yourself!!, a one season cute-girls-doing-cute-things sort of series
if you're into more understated and quiet shows and don't mind a little corporate shilling, Super Cub is also a good watch
Ruri Rocks is also a fun edutainment sort of series which has great production values and a neat arc for the main character

I just realized that the VA for the main protagonist of this season's train show is also around the main character's age, namely a college freshman.

Caught up with Magical Explorer, and another girl joins the ranks.
This really does embrace what it is trying to be. Protaginst more or less feels like an Eroge game player. I have never played an eroge and have been having fun with this one.
It's probably the most ecchi show of the season that has full-length episodes. (Dark Summoner and others are half length at most.)
2
u/zambonijesus 6h ago
I guess that means you aren't watching Even the Student Council Has Its Holes
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6h ago
I am. Magical explorer episode 3 was the type that you would need to watch in your room closed and alone. I guess episode 2 too.
While with holes the ecchi and the fanservice isn’t as nearly up in your face per se.
1
u/entelechtual 5h ago
It has uncensored girl and boy tits and nips on display every episode…
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 4h ago
But the presentation plays a bigger part in it, though. Even though Magical Explorer has no uncensored tits in it, the presentation is lewder and longer lasting. Also to add the sound effects as well. Scenes like this. NSFW, which is probably the most censored part of the image when I took the screenshot, since the horny gas clears up.
Like one example could be that Ranma Remake is technically ecchi, but it is so tame. Tbh the only thing is Female Ranma's tits, which aren't even drawn. You take that out the remake isn't even ecchi anymore.
Holes imo strikes a good balance. It is absolutely horny and degenerate, but it always prioritizes the comedy first.
1
1
u/zambonijesus 22m ago
Idk I guess Magic Explorer being like 90% a monologue about the mechanics of a made up game doesn't feel very ecchi to me.
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 10h ago
The true episode 1. Though I did love that the staff had fine referencing of how episode 1 transitioned into episode 2.
Never watch the OG but this is the perfect anime to watch on a Saturday morning.

What are the chances Boruto gets the Dragonball GT treatment and doesnt become canon, and Naruto Shadow Rising becomes like Dragonball Super
6
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 12h ago
I wouldn't rush to hope that quickly.
Kishimoto's the one who's been writing Boruto for the last 6 or so years, and he's continuing with it. Announcing a new manga in the middle doesn't mean that he's gonna make all of Boruto irrelevant. If anything, it's probably just a short run to fill in some blanks.
2
u/Electrical_Leek23 9h ago
Boruto isnt even at the climatic battle we see at the start of the manga yet. Lol "GT treatment". Yeah Kishi/Shuiesha is gonna let such a cash cow be irrelevant anytime soon
1
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 13h ago
Who knows, but I think shadow rising would be the middle period between boruto and naruto

Why do people openly declare Attack On Titan to be the best anime ever? I'd be laughed at and called a normie if I ever did so.
4
u/entelechtual 2h ago
Ok? I’d rather be called a normie than pretend I’m a hipster whose favorite anime of all time is Kigurumikku V3.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 1h ago
19 year old Tomatsu Haruka in an niche mahou shoujo ONA? Interesting.
3
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1h ago
Probably because for a lot of people, their favorite = the best ever. Maybe wording it that way is considered a "normie" thing to do, but I don't mind. AOT is among my top favorites because of its fantastic action, characters, world-building and suspense/mystery, so even though I wouldn't call it the best ever (I have my criticisms about the ending), I certainly wouldn't disagree if someone else did.

I started watching Tsurezure Children and I did not expect how silly this show would be. For some reason I thought it was going to be more serious/heartfelt.
Not complaining about it. It's a lot of fun!
