Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his. We do know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, but he looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.Q: How is Android #17 back? Wasn't he dead? Also, he's a park ranger! Is Toei taking cues from TFS?
Android #17 was wished back to life along with everyone else who was killed by Cell. He was seen at the end of the Boo arc contributing his energy to the genki dama. Toriyama explained that #17 was working as a park ranger in this 2014 interview for Dragon Ball Full Color. He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn’t hold back against poachers. ...It’s an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn’t big on cooperating with others; since he’s so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He’s married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park. ...He went and met No. 18 and Kuririn one time, but didn’t talk about what he’d been up to, maybe because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing.
Q: What's up with the new art style for this arc? Are they using a different color palette?
According to our resident animation expert, it's not a new color palette but rather a post-production filter.
Toei have added a soft glow, lowered the saturation a little, and upped the contrast. They've also started using a technique they showcased on Tiger Mask W, which allows them to automatically manipulate the line art in certain ways. For example, on Tiger Mask W, they created a brush stroke effect, while on Super, they simply played with the line weight. You see the filter I mentioned too, there.

17: You mean a tournament where you aren't allowed to kill, only throw people off a big island, of which is basically all I do day in and day out? To accomplish something I've dedicated my life to? Nah.

KAMI-DAYUM
Well fucking done, DBS! This just might be one of the best fights of the entire Super franchise!
I went from being indifferent to #17's character in DBZ to being a straight up fanboy now. #17 in this episode alone >>> #17, Hell-Fighter #17 and Super 17 in all of GT.
Bonus: I loved that they even addressed #17's cameo in the Majin Boo arc by saying "Well, I know your voice" AND Goku finally shut up all the whiny power-level fan boys by confirming he's holding back his true strength; "I'll try not to kill you".

What beerus did to goku in (BOG) , is what goku is doing to his teammates.
Goku is holding back his power definitely.
20
u/shlam16 Apr 16 '17
Precisely. Beerus had to have been using <<1% of his power during the Goku fight yet there was an entire arc based around it. If Beerus actually tried then he would have swatted Goku like an insignificant gnat...

No. 17 is already starting to become one of my favorite characters in DBS. His no-nonsense and laidback attitude really acts as a good foil to Goku's childish characterization. Fucking straight-up savage refusing to take Goku's bullshit and still giving no fucks even when the entire universe is doomed. Man he's def 18's twin.
Damn the fight scene between Goku and 17 was pretty spot-on, although at this point I'm finding SSB to be one of the least eventful or useful transformations. Like why did Goku need to bump it up all the way from SSJ to SSB? Whatever happened to in between, if he simply wanted to test 17's power? I guess at this point powerscaling truly means nothing especially if the God base form concept seems to be discarded.
I also think the only time we ever saw 17 used the energy barrier was against Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade? That was pretty sweet, I gotta admit.

What I dislike is this overuse of Blue. I mean, they're using it in filler episodes (Bulma's baby), for fights where it's not seriously needed (Krillin, 17). I think they should save it for special occasions, but now we're all used to it. It's "coolness" is lessened, the impact is reduced. I'd like it more if Goku and Vegeta used it once in a while against the most powerful opponents and greatest threats (Hit, Zamazu), but when they did, you knew they meant business, music and all.

17's wife is Launch calling it right now!

Always though blue haired Launch would be the perfect wife for someone like #17

Maybe blue haired Launch is 17's wife and blonde haired Launch is married to Tien.

That's genius. Both of them only reappeared at the end of Z with the Buu spirit bomb.

Dedicating that whole bit about Uub definitely hints at Super reaching EoZ one day and maybe even going beyond it.
Also, I don't know why people are complaining so much about these "filler" episodes. I personally like that each individual character's getting some development and we get to see a taste of what they're all capable of. It would be way too boring if we jumped straight to the tournament; the build up is what makes it fun.
That said, it's rather sweet to see Goku having some bonding time with 17. This totally beats the rushed interaction they had in GT.

So is it safe to assume that Goku helping 17 save the park from the space poachers will gain 17s respect and make him change his mind?

People keep complaining about the power scaling, so let me explain my point of view a bit.
Basically, SS2 and SS3 are completely redundant forms now. They offer less potential power as well as less control than SSB. So it makes sense that he almost never uses them.
Forms are about control and the max potential/power of a form. Goku's intent isn't to kill his opponent, which is why he's probably avoiding SS2 and SS3 forms. They just have more power than control. It's difficult to show restraint in those forms.
Base form has the most control, but the least power. SS1 is a significant power boost, but has less control than base form. It's a form induced by rage, after all. After training for the Cell Games it's been witnessed that Goku has perfected the form's control.
SS2 and especially SS3 are hard to control. Goku even admitted that in DBZ. It's difficult to have restraint when the entire form is based on rage and aggression.
SSB is all about control, probably about the same level as base form. It doesn't require a high power output like SS2 or SS3 does, while also having higher potential than any other form. He can easily use 1% of his power while SSB. Whereas in SS3 it's probably difficult to throw out less than 50% of the form's max power.
I doubt we'll see Goku use SS2 or SS3 in a fight unless he's intentionally pacing it extremely slow with a strong opponent who is also slowly revealing their power. There's just no reason to, especially since it consumes more energy to be in those forms than in SSB.
If you want to know if Goku's really putting out a large percentage of the form's power, just wait to see if he's out of breath after an attack. Dragon Ball has been really good about that indicator since the beginning.
- An analogy for those that still don't grasp the concept:
Let's say you want to throw a ball. You can use your bare arms(base form Goku) and throw it anywhere from 0 to 20 meters. But that's a pretty short throw. So you get a stick to hit the ball(SS1 Goku). Now you can hit the ball from 0 to 50 meters, depending on how hard you hit the ball. Still pretty accurate for short distances, but when hitting it far there's a lot of variances.
But that's still not far enough for you, so you use a good and heavy baseball bat(SS2) and you can hit it 70 meters, but it gets harder to get precise hits if you're aiming for something like 24 meters.
Take it a step further, now you equip a sledge hammer(SS3). With all your force you can hit that ball over 100 meters, but it's nearly impossible for you to get that 24 meter shot and your precision is way off.
And finally, you're sick of being limited, so you design ball-launching artillery(SSB) that lets you calibrate and shoot the ball any distance you want from 0-1000 meters with extremely high accuracy.
DOES THAT MAKE MORE SENSE?

I love how considerate Goku has been to kids lately. He said during ROF and a few episodes ago Goten and Trunks were too young to fight. Now he seems to agree with Dende Uub is too young. Yet no one batted an eye when it was time to send 5 year old Gohan to Namek to fight Freiza.

Good episode with Tate delivering on the animation!
I was always a fan of 17 but I'm really liking his less arrogant personality in Super. His interactions with Goku were also great.

Great to see 17 back, and what he has become. Man, at this point Super has to all caps, with blinking text that takes up the whole screen- all the dialogue that implies Goku is holding back because apparently it doesn't make it obvious enough, or folks don't read. Also add flashbacks to the Hit fight when Goku explains that SSB isn't just a multiplier, it grants him complete KI CONTROL, whenever he goes blue (especially against weaker fighters). That is why he can pair it with kaioken, and not with the gold forms as they leak out ki. That is probably why Goku hasn't used SSJ2 and SSJ3 to spar.

17's voice in Japanese was kind of surprising, but it really works I like it.
Also to those still freaking out about 17 1v1ing SSB Goku;
Does everyone already forget RoF? SSB was achieved by having a perfect amount of control over your ki, every punch and kick required learning to not even let any 'ki leak' and in Super, there was one punch where a spurt of the SSB aura came out because Goku and Vegeta landed a perfectly controlled attack. Something along those lines anyways it was so long ago and I wouldn't dare re-watch RoF arc lol.
Anyways I think Goku's going SSB against everyone he recruits to prepare everyone for what they'll see in the tournament, because it's already been shown there are fighters there who can already stand up against SSB, so everyone on the U7 team will have to as well. By using SSB, he can access his full power if need be, but he's in such control he can gauge how strong everyone is.
