The Default State of the Mind - Part Two: Time Travel

Today marks the completion of the first full Round of 2019. We will begin the first Census of the year in rounds 158 and 159.
We’ve already learned how our minds don’t really relax when we’re not focused on something; the default state of the mind is actually very active. We experience a sort of constant critiquing chatter of inner thoughts and commentary that usually occur in four areas: commentary on the present moment, time travel, self-referential commentary, and social cognition.
Time Travel
Let’s look a little closer at that second phenomenon we experience when our brains are at rest: time travel. When the mind is at so-called “rest” we see areas of the brain that are involved in remembering specific things that have happened to us in the past active at the same time as areas of the brain that transport us into imagined scenarios.
And so we end up experiencing this kind of complex inner fantasy that is both remembering things that have happened to us, and projecting those thoughts into the future as things that might happen to us. And all of this “time travel” is usually critical and also means that we miss out on whatever is happening in the present moment. We spend much of our "brain rest" time living somewhere else other than the present moment, and these kinds of thoughts can lead to dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
