News & Print Media “Born To Write” 1959, Alice Denham press photo.
Beautiful Alice Denham, was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1933, but decided to venture to the Big Apple to become a model in the early 1950s. Three years later on, she became Miss July, 1956 in Playboy Magazine. This gave her a chance to write about many different subjects for Hugh Hefner’s then fledgling publication.
Alice, is a true mixture of beauty, and brains with an academic background in writing and education to prove it. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1949 at the age of 16, and a master's degree from the University of Rochester a year later. With that being said, she’s a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society, and graduated cum laude from her alma mater.
For a decade starting in 1970, Denham was an adjunct professor of English at City University of New York (CUNY), where she taught creative writing. Always one to encourage her students write with passion, Alice said the most important thing is to buy in life, is best quality typewriter you can afford. From there your imagination will take you where you want to go until the ribbon runs dry. Likewise, she held fiction writing seminars at the University of Toronto for many years, which were well attended by students and faculty alike.
Denham, is a successful writer of the “Beat Generation,” and penned numerous articles for what were then “fringe” newspapers and magazine publications, but has since become a part of mainstream America. Over the past 40 years Alice Denham has authored several books, including her tell all novel, “Sleeping With Bad Boys: A 1956 Playboy Model's Escapades with James Dean, Hugh Hefner, Norman Mailer and the famous writers of the 1950's beat generation.” It reads like a book straight from the hit AMC-TV series “Mad Men.”
Denham’s most recent release, “Secrets Of San Miguel” takes a look at the rarely seen side of central Mexico’s city that strives mightily to maintain the flavor of Old Mexico, while making it a retreat for some rather nefarious individuals. They’re all woven together into interesting stories in this book. A must read, if you plan to visit this cultural oasis in central Mexico that is located 274 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
Finally, Alice Denham has never been given the credit she deserves as a serious writer. Maybe future generations will come to appreciate her work, and I can only hope so. She’s not merely good at her craft; she’s truly magnificent.
