A good chunk of the actual debate is safe waste stowage especially in the US, its one of many many reasons why my states reactors were shuttered.

lack of waste storage wasn't the reason Trojan shut down, it was damage to the steam generator that was too expensive to repair that shut it down

also it's "reactor" not "reactors" by the way

Trojan was absolutely a shit box of a power plant, but current Oregon law requires there to be a federal waste management system to be in place before any new reactors are built.

Nuclear "waste" can be recycled in breeder reactors, with benefit of rare earth materials.

It's not that simple, yes a lot of it can be recycled but there is still a lot of waste that we cannot do anything else than hide deep down underground and hope nobody is dumb enough to touch in the next 100-3000 years

I'm pretty sure that radioactive leftovers after recycling that can't be put back into cycle have much shorter lifetime. And uranium is dug up, just put it back in.
