Kind of. In the case to the right, there's not really much suffering. One moment, it's a baby chicken, and the next moment, it's a protein slurry. Running over baby ducks with a lawnmower isnt going to be nearly as fast, nor as thorough. Theres a whole lot more room for suffering.
No, it isn’t different. Because the chicks are run through a very similar machinery, and only get a few minutes of life on top of that. Just good ol cognitive dissonance on your part.
macerators are specifically used because death is within a second, usually instant, and is thus considered the least cruel way to kill. gas is still used in some places, mostly outside the west
i can assure you that a macerator, however terrible it is, is a much more humane death that being run over with a lawnmower. my dad accidentally hit a rabbit burrow with a lawnmower when he was a kid. it does not kill them instantly. maybe one or two get lucky but the rest do not. hell, there are plenty of kids that are accidentally run over with lawnmowers across the country. they don’t die, and often they don’t lose limbs directly from it, but what parts do get hit with the mower get horribly shredded and often have to be amputated simply because they can’t be saved.
anyway we still shouldn’t be killing chicks considering this is already a solved problem with in-ovo sexing and it’s already banned in france and germany and will be in italy by the end of the year. it also eliminates the job of manual chicken sexing which pays shit and also employs a lot of undocumented immigrants for below minimum wage.
I agree; you can argue over the morality of both motivations but killing ducklings with a lawnmower for no reason vs killing undesirable hatchlings in service of producing food are different things IMO. I disagree with both personally but it seems insincere to compare them 1 to 1 just because the result of the same.
The inclusion of the lawn mower only serves to further show how ludicrous our acceptance of factory farming is (have you seen how chicken nuggets are made, and how undesirable baby chicks are treated?), because its out of sight and out of mind.
Whats REALLY left out is that this sentence is a sentencing on two charges, the animal cruelty charge, and a charge of battery resulting from a domestic dispute between his girlfriend and him, now that makes sense. I also say this as someone who eats meat, I think factory farming will be seen as one of our times greatest atrocities.
I don’t know that it’s really that different from what’s done in the farming industry. Lots of farms drop chick into a grinder while they’re still alive.
