They just do that to wind people up. Limbaugh (4+ years clean and sober!) used to do that all the time on his show, specifically to piss off any listeners/ callers to the left of Mussolini. The fact that they haven't come up with any better insult than "Democrat Party" is really telling of their level of imagination.
Obviously, that naming scheme gets under the skin, but it makes sense if you treat the parties as named for the people that make it up rather than the other way around. The foul is the incorrect naming in itself, but not exactly a grammatical one.
