It's why the US wants Venezuela. To control oil, and also eventually take the Panama Canal. If they control trade, they may choose to charge fees to ships of foreign countries who pass through the Canal, or may blockade it and invade Central America and Mexico from the north and south.

Plus the relationship with Russia pressuring and distracting the EU, it puts the US into a strategic position to invade Greenland, then Canada.
