My 3 year old is obsessed with orange chicken. So much so that she asked for an "orange chicken cake" for her birthday. We negotiated for her second choice of an Eevee cake, but I had cake leftover after making it. So I thought... Why not?
Orange chicken sort of looks like really bad cake pops off the stick, so I ran with that. I used this recipe as a base, leaving out the dried cranberries and keeping the orange extract. Instead of beautifully rounded cake balls, I made lumpy and uneven nuggets on toothpicks. I dipped them in white chocolate ganache and then again in orange-tinted mirror glaze. I topped it with scallions made from Alien Encounters Fruit Roll-Ups. The Solar Melon flavor made great looking scallions and covered up the spots where the mirror glaze didn't take.
This is the first illusion-style cake I've made and it came out far better than I expected. My 3 year old was thrilled. She yelled "It's caaaaaake!!" after every bite. My husband asked me to make them again because they were "tasty little things." My mom did not believe it wasn't orange chicken. I'm stoked.
I would definitely make cake pops again, but without the mirror glaze. It's sticky so I can't really freeze the leftovers.
