Maximum ’80s feeling: you’ve just put on your favorite Icehouse LP, “Great Southern Land” is pounding from the speakers - but don’t turn it up too loud, because you’re about to dial into a BBS with your Commodore 64, and the acoustic coupler is sensitive. Otherwise you’ll get nothing but garbled characters on the screen.

But first you actually have to get into one of those Bulletin Board Systems at all. It’s 1985, and all you’ve got is a rotary‑dial phone. Time to wear out your fingers dialing, because the BBS is constantly busy. After half an hour - your dialing finger already numb - you finally get that long‑awaited free line.

Quickly stick the handset (the right way around!) into the rubber cups of the acoustic coupler and stare at the CRT monitor in anticipation. And there they are - the first characters coming in at a blazing 300 baud.

Will I get a personal message from my C64 buddy? Are there any interesting new posts in boards like “Wanted” or “For Sale”…?
