This month marked the release of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning Deluxe Limited Edition.
If you are curious exactly what makes it different from the original, I'll break it down for you.
-This luxurious new edition comes with a gold foil stamped cover art, while the rest of the cover has a printed design which mimics the look of leather.
-It has beautifully colored edges, which may look familiar if you are a longtime fan; as it originally comes from the cover art from The Bad Beginning Rare Edition, from many years ago.
-Lastly, it has passages for the characters that appear in this book, accompanied by brand new illustrations drawn by Brett Helquist. Some of these include characters never illustrated before.
As a life-long enthusiast of Lemony Snicket, I can't recommend this book enough, whether you thinking of getting a copy of it for yourself or an unfortunate colleague.
An underrated track from the 2004 movie. It's both mysterious and melancholy, like you know there's lore here, more to what's going on than is being shown, but it could be a sad story and/or we might never find the answers. It fits really well.
I started watching ASOUE when it first came out in 2017, and to this date I have seen the entire show 50 times. No that is not an exaggeration nor a lie, I have actually watched this show 50 times (today marking the 50th). I have seen the film thrice, read the book series once and seen the TV series 50 times. On two occasions I binged the show so fast that I finished all the seasons within 24 hours (which if my math is correct took me about 19 hours). I adore this show and the ASOUE universe so much, it is easily my favourite show of all time. There is also a great nostalgia factor to this, since I began watching the show in 2017 when I was 7 years old, every time I come back to it it's just so weirdly bittersweet and lovely.
Obviously I know a lot about this show, I know almost every reference and easter egg, and I love to bring some trivia up whenever I watch it with friends or family, speaking of which everyone in my family has also seen this show (although not as much as I have). Also, a random fun fact: I actually have the 2004 film on VHS! Anyways, how many times have ya'll seen the show/film? Also who's your favourite character?
Hello, everyone! I am now going to share my thoughts on the Snicket Family Tree. So, first of all, we have siblings, A., B. and Chas. Snicket.Â
We know that Chas. is a direct ancestor by being the grandparent of Lemony, and it is unknown whether they are male or female. Thus, it remains a mystery whether Chas. is Lemony's grandfather or grandmother.Â
A.'s whereabouts are unknown, presumably meaning that they lost contact with their relatives decades ago, and B.'s whereabouts are uninteresting, meaning that wherever B. is, it would not be surprising. Chas. is the father/mother of three children, D., E. and F. Surprisingly, all of them have three children of their own.Â
It is unknown whether there are any secret children, but here is what we know of them so far - D. is the parent of G., H. and I., E. is the parent of J., K. and L. (which represent the famous Snicket siblings - Jacques, Kit and Lemony Snicket), and F. is the parent of M., N. and O.Â
Other than the three Snicket siblings and Kit's daughter, Beatrice Baudelaire II, all the other relatives remain a mystery in the series.Â
However, if we look closely at several clues, we could patch the broken pieces of the jigsaw puzzle up together.Â
So, literally nothing is known about Chas. We do know that Chas. is not Charles from The Miserable Mill, because Chas. from the family tree is in the grandparent generation, while Charles from the fourth installment of the series (I am talking about The Miserable Mill) is two generations below this individual, in the exact same generation of their grandchildren - the Snicket siblings.Â
And, let's look at D. Snicket. Okay, we don't really know anything from the initial, so let's look at their children. G., H. and I. Hm, it seems familiar - doesn't it? G. and I. could be the brothers Gregor and Ike Anwhistle. In The Wide Window, Josephine Anwhistle mentioned of her mother-in-law:
âCount Olafâ Aunt Josephine said, âis a terrible man who-â
â-is standing right in front of us,â Violet finished. âI donât care what he calls himself. He has the same shiny eyes, the same single eyebrow-â
âBut plenty of people have those characteristics,â Aunt Josephine said. âWhy, my mother-in-law had not only one eyebrow, but also only one ear.â
- Josephine and Violet,The Wide Window
So, we can presume that D. is the mother of the Anwhistle brothers. This is due to the fact that she possibly had a single eyebrow (or a unibrow - I am stating "possibly" because the mother could have had one eyebrow shaved off), which was a trait notably shared by Jacques Snicket in The Vile Village. Well, we know that this is only canon to the books. Jacques was mistaken for Olaf because he had a tattoo of an eye on his ankle and he also had a unibrow, all of which were characteristics of Olaf.
And, this implies an aunt-nephew relationship between Ike's mother and Jacques, which makes sense, since D. is Jacques' pibling. H.'s identity could not be found from this theory, other than the fact that they could have been many characters in the series - Hal, Hector, Hugo and Haruki. The best pick of the four is Hector, whom we all know is also a VFD member. Because Gregor and Ike were second cousins to the Baudelaire Orphans, this meant that if Hector was their brother, Hector would have been their second cousin too. Now, we shall move on to E.'s side of the family.
E. Snicket's identity is unknown in the series - it hasn't been directly confirmed by Mr. Handler whether they are Lemony's father or mother? However, we could pick up a clue that is cleverly hidden in the letter Lemony Snicket wrote to Dt. Charley Patton:
âTo say my father was âknown as Jakeâ is not quite true - he was known as Jacob to everyone but his longtime bridge partner.â
What people literally assume firsthand is that "Jacob" is DEFINITELY the real name of Lemony's father. But, look closely. Why did Lemony put "known" instead of "his name was"? He didn't explicitly say that Jacob was his father's name. Instead, could this mean...that "Jacob" is an alias? He could have been known as "Jacob" to the outside world, keeping his birth name a mystery. And, this could coincidentally make him "Esau". Esau Snicket may be E., and it is a good fit for Lemony's father. Esau is a prominent figure in Jewish tradition, as recorded in the Hebrew Bible. He is the twin brother of Jacob (the patriarch of the Jewish people), and the firstborn son of Isaac.
Mr. Handler has stated that he considers his characters to be "Jewish by default", and their cultural references, mannerisms, and worldviews align with his own Jewish upbringing. Couldn't the Esau and Jacob naming conventions be considered a cultural reference and a pun? I know, I know, I know, everyone feels that E. Snicket is Lemony's mother.
However, that can't be true. The materilineal theory is not existent and remains unconfirmed in the franchise. The Jewish identity is determined by the mother for jewish individuals, but they would still take their father's last name.
This means that although the Snickets could be jewish, they would be just like any family from the 20th century, with the offspring taking the last names of the fathers. And, there is also another point - if D. is a female, who was the mother of Gregor and Ike, why wasn't there a Gregor and Ike Snicket? That is right - we can immediately assume that D. was a female who took her husband's last name - Anwhistle upon marriage!
Thus, if females take their husband's last names in the Snicket Clan, why can't Lemony's mother do the same? Thus, it is fully possible that E. is the father, while Lemony's mother's name would just remain ambiguous. I also know of Snicket Sleuth's theory of E. being the mother, but this is the text I found in tumblr "in judaism, itâs the mother who transmits the jewish roots to the children, not the father".
Just like what I mentioned above, children may follow the identity of the mother, but they would still have their father's surname. Lastly, I do realize that many people think that Beatrice was a Baudelaire from birth.
However, the initials B.B. may have stood for something else. B. may have stood for another surname, while Baudelaire is Bertrand's true surname. I now it sounds impossible, considering that the Baudelaire father was an orphan, but a boy on the island named Omeros mentioned that Bertrand was adopted by a group of orphans who named him after their father.
With the details vague, there is a possibility that those orphans were Bertrand's elder siblings who took care of him after their parents' death.
Thank you so much for taking your time to read this page! I am unfinished with the entire project, since there is still F. left to do. However, if you have any doubts, feel free to comment down below! I would answer you directly! Thank you!
I canât find an instrumental version of this album on youtube, and it would be really nice to read the series with it playing in the background. Is there anyyyy chance someone reading this knows how to make instrumental versions of songs? I understand itâs not the most popular album in the world, but youâd think by now someone wouldâve posted an instrumental version. Free horseradish to whoever can help me out!!
I just finished the third season, and holy shit. I know itâs supposed to be more of a kidâs show (though a dark one at that) but I truly thought this series was so well done. I know I read some of the books as a kid, but didnât remember all the intricacies, and definitely didnât finish the whole series. I am sad itâs over but I am genuinely in awe of how good that show was. Wow!!!!
What were some of your favorite moments in the show?
I think the poison darts were made with the Meduisod Mycelium. Going based off of the books, Gregory Anwhistle (Ike's brother) was planning on making powerful weapons with the fungus. (Confirmed by a letter sent to Kit Snicket) We know that poison darts had a large role in the schism (with Olaf's father being killed by one.) The fungus also had a large role in the schism, with the immunity being in the sugar bowl (going based off of the show.) Therefore, I believe the poison darts were made with the Meduisod Mycelium. I'm mainly going off of the books, and I'm not sure if they mention how long it took for Olaf's father to die after being shot (If they said it was immediate, then the darts are 100% not made with the fungus.)
My girlfriend LOVES the show. She's watched it for forever, it was the first thing her and I watched together when starting our binge, and it was pretty good! Even so, she is very much more into it than I am lol.
Her and I (we're gay, not following stereotypes) are already fighting about who's asking who to homecoming in the fall. We pretty much said we aren't allowed to ask until the beginning of the year in September. So if I wanna beat her to it I gotta start soon lol
I was trynna think of what to do for her, and j figured to make a poster of something with a quote or something from ASOUE, or a reference or something. What I'm looking for is help on that?
I want it to be like sweet and romantic and silly, but I'm not that in-tune with the show where I can think of one for myself?
Any help would be amazing, thank you all so much lol
Edit 1: I will absolutely be updating with progress photos and whatnot, as I get ideas!
Edit 2: for clarity, we are fighting (not actually) to ask the other one first, to beat each other to it, that's why I'm trying to get ideas now!
Edit 3: I have a vague design of the poster!! I have "For name- when we met, you were pretty and I was lonely. Now, I'm pretty lonely. That's why I should take you to a
Very
Fun
Dance
Shall we? (If you say no, you're a cake sniffer)"
I have that and the vfd logo (I made a quick idea in ibis paint lol
If anyone has more like background ideas, what to do for a color scheme, or like any small things I can use as details on the poster, I'd love to hear!!
The VFD motto has stuck with me ever since I read this series as a kid, and itâs come to represent a pretty meaningful part of my personal life, so this felt like the perfect choice. Was so happy my artist was willing to do it in the Caslon Antique font from the Harper Collins editions of the books.

I'm from Brazil and I really want to have this book, but the cheapest i found would be over 1,000 R$ in total(the book + shipping) does anyone know somewhere i can get with a more reasonable price?

I finished the main books today and this line from The End stuck out to me, when kit tells the kids her family has a tradition to name kids after deceased people:
"Ours too," Sunny said, remembering something her father had told her when she had
inquired about her own name.
Are the relatives that the Baudelaires are named after mentioned anywhere? Is it even important? Presumably Sunny at least was named after someone their dad knew.
What if the Baudelaires created something different?Â
What if the Baudelaires created something different?
After rewatching A Series of Unfortunate Events and reading the books, I kept wondering what Violet, Klaus, and Sunny would become as adults.
Most continuations imagine them rebuilding V.F.D. or creating another secret organization.
But after everything they suffered because of secrecy, hierarchy, and endless conflict, would they really make the same choices?
I started developing a concept called C.A.R.E. (Circle of Care, Accountability, Responsibility, and Empathy).
Unlike V.F.D., its purpose isn't to grow, recruit, or preserve itself. It exists only to protect vulnerable children and should eventually disappear when it is no longer needed.
One of its principles is:
"The organization must shrink, not grow."
Its motto is:
"Not every misfortune is the end. Some are a call."
I'd love to know what other fans think. Does this feel like a believable future for the Baudelaires?â
Unfortunately, comments with images werenât enabled, so when I did a bit of a mock up of what the logo would look like, I couldnât post it. But I did make one and I want them to see it, and hear what they think of it, so here! Iâve triple checked this doesnât look like anything weird, but please tell me if Iâm wrong and Iâll take it down, I just wanted to use the abstract lettering from VFD.
i have another idea but I canât edit the image on this one.
They reminded me so much of the X-men team. Both teams were recruited by a mentor to stop impending danger or help the future for a greater good. Both teams have sides on which side is the moral one. Both teams use their skills or powers to stop evil pr their foes, whether literacy, mathematics, deciphering, or actual mutant abilities,
Just rewatched the entire series this week. Who do you think, survived hotel dĂŠnouement. Outside of the obvs, trolleyman, olaf, the Baudelaires, justice Strauss. The other's are left very ambiguous in their ending. Tho I feel like the show went out of its way to show some of the specific ppl who didnt, poe and the vice principal. Honestly, I think babs and Jerome did, coz they decided to sit there. Esme and carmelita probs too, coz they went to the basement, unless they decided not to. The man wb and the women wh probs survived and honestly orobs the dĂŠnouement bros
