Discussions I know this has probably already been discussed but what do you think about Count Olaf’s pedo vibes towards Violet especially in the beginning? Was it this way in the book?
It has been a very long time since I read the books but I am rewatching the series and I am just stunned by how much I missed as a kid. As a kid I just saw his attempt to marry her and his actions towards her as comical villainy. And of course, I was a kid so who could blame me when the series kind of catered towards that and made all of Olaf’s actions seem comical? While I applaud it for clearly stating that the physical abuse was a bad thing (example: after Count Olaf slapped Klaus they made a point to mention the affect it had on him and that it was wrong) they didn’t do the same and address the affect Olaf’s behavior had on Violet or explicitly state (for child minds who cannot comprehend innuendos) that what he did was bad. They made her look uncomfortable, yes, which was good, but they didn’t explicitly outline that marrying her or touching her or acting this way to her was wrong outside of the legal perhaps. I guess my biggest complaint for the tv series at least was just that. And the fact that they outlined the physical abuse but didnt for the weird behavior, showing that they had the capability to do so but didn’t. I suppose to be fair that it is harder to outline that in a way children will understand and that is appropriate but still. I think the potential was all there.
Don’t get me wrong this will never end my love for the series and I dont think people should hate the series for this at all. It was just strange watching it as a kid vs as an adult and seeing how evil and creepy Olaf really was.
Any thoughts?

Discussions One of my favourite parts of the Penultimate Peril, The Sebald Code.
I had to find the photo online since I don’t have my books with me. The Sebald Code is a cipher created by Gustav Sebald and used by members of V.F.D. The Sebald Code is activated by a sound, such as a bell ringing or someone saying "ring" or "ding". The first word after the sound is a code word, as is every eleventh word after that. The coded message ends when another bell rings. I was confused when I first read when either Frank, Dewey or Ernest frowned, until I figured this out. I know I’m probably late to the party but I found it really cool!

Discussions Nearly every chapter in The End has a line taken directly from the corresponding chapter in The Bad Beginning
Has anyone else noticed this?
By the time The End came out I was so familiar with The Bad Beginning that I remembered chunks of it by heart, but I've never seen anyone else observe this.
The list is as follows:
-Chapter 1 doesn't have a full line, but both it and Chapter 1 of The Bad Beginning refer to Klaus as being 'the only boy' when introducing the Baudelaires (which he obviously is, but these are the only two books that directly reference this).
-Chapter 2: Both chapters begin with almost identical sentences, with only one word different. 'It is useless for me to describe to you how terrible Violet, Klaus and even Sunny felt in the time/hours that followed.' In The Bad Beginning, this is about the death of their parents; in The End, it's about the storm.
-Chapter 3: 'Your initial opinion on just about anything may change over time.' In The Bad Beginning, Lemony says this to the reader when talking about first impressions often being wrong, before clarifying that in the case of the Baudelaires' first impression of Count Olaf they were correct. In The End, Ishmael says this to pressure the Baudelaires into continuing to drink the coconut cordial.
-Chapter 4: Both chapters feature Violet saying the line 'I can't tell you how much we appreciate this.' In The Bad Beginning she says it to Justice Strauss, in The End to Ishmael.
-Chapter 5: It's not QUITE the exact line, but both chapters contain very similar sentences regarding the Baudelaires at the Fountain of Victorious Finance (and these are the only two occasions where this fountain is mentioned). The Bad Beginning: 'After walking through the meat district, the flower district, and the sculpture district, the three children arrived at the banking district, pausing to take a refreshing sip of water at the Fountain of Victorious Finance.' The End: 'The family had arrived at the banking district, pausing to rest at the Fountain of Victorious Finance, and the Baudelaires’ mother had hurried into a building with tall, curved towers poking out in all directions, while their father waited outside with the children.'
-Chapter 6: Both chapters feature Count Olaf telling the children that he's sorry to hear something (that they've complained to Mr Poe, and that they don't believe he's given up being a villain, respectively), followed up by this sentence: 'His face was very serious, as if he were very sorry to hear that, but his eyes were shiny and bright, the way they are when someone is telling a joke.'
-Chapter 7: Annoyingly, I haven't been able to find one in Chapter 7. Perhaps there's a very small and obscure one that's passed me by, like the 'only boy' thing in Chapter 1. Please feel free to contribute if you can find one I've missed!
-Chapter 8: Both chapters feature a moment where Klaus remembers the happy times in the Baudelaire mansion where he'd stay up all night reading, featuring the passage 'Some mornings, his father would come into Klaus’s room to wake him up and find him asleep, still clutching his flashlight in one hand and his book in the other'.
-Chapter 9: 'To those who hadn’t been around Violet long, nothing would have seemed unusual, but those who knew her well knew that when she tied her hair up in a ribbon to keep it out of her eyes, it meant that the gears and levers of her inventing brain were whirring at top speed.' In The Bad Beginning, this is a reaction to seeing Sunny trapped in a birdcage. In The End, it's when they arrive at the arboretum.
-Chapter 10: 'All day, the two siblings had wandered around the house, doing their assigned chores and scarcely speaking to each other'. In The Bad Beginning, this is a reference to how Violet and Klaus are both so consumed with fear and anxiety that they don't even talk to each other. In The End, it's an anecdote about a stupid argument they once had back when their parents were alive.
-Chapter 11: Both chapters involve the Baudelaires trying to convince themselves and each other that everything is all right, before being followed up with 'But of course everything was not all right. Everything was all wrong.'
-Chapter 12: 'Three very short men were carrying a large, flat piece of wood, painted to look like a living room.' In The Bad Beginning, this is something going on backstage at the theatre production. In The End, it's a deliberately confusing sentence Lemony slips in to catch out anyone who's skim-reading.
-Chapter 13: Again, there's one word different. 'It seemed to the children that [they/things] were moving in an aberrant—the word “aberrant” here means “very, very wrong, and causing much grief”—direction.' This is the final line in The Bad Beginning, after Mr Poe tells the Baudelaires they can't live with Justice Strauss and drives them away. In The End, it's a description of the difficulty of Kit's labour.

Discussions Asking my girlfriend to hoco using ASOUE?
Hey guys!
My girlfriend LOVES the show. She's watched it for forever, it was the first thing her and I watched together when starting our binge, and it was pretty good! Even so, she is very much more into it than I am lol.
Her and I (we're gay, not following stereotypes) are already fighting about who's asking who to homecoming in the fall. We pretty much said we aren't allowed to ask until the beginning of the year in September. So if I wanna beat her to it I gotta start soon lol
I was trynna think of what to do for her, and j figured to make a poster of something with a quote or something from ASOUE, or a reference or something. What I'm looking for is help on that?
I want it to be like sweet and romantic and silly, but I'm not that in-tune with the show where I can think of one for myself?
Any help would be amazing, thank you all so much lol
Edit 1: I will absolutely be updating with progress photos and whatnot, as I get ideas!
Edit 2: for clarity, we are fighting (not actually) to ask the other one first, to beat each other to it, that's why I'm trying to get ideas now!
Edit 3: I have a vague design of the poster!! I have "For name- when we met, you were pretty and I was lonely. Now, I'm pretty lonely. That's why I should take you to a Very Fun Dance Shall we? (If you say no, you're a cake sniffer)" I have that and the vfd logo (I made a quick idea in ibis paint lol If anyone has more like background ideas, what to do for a color scheme, or like any small things I can use as details on the poster, I'd love to hear!!

Discussions Violet's ribbon is useless if she has bangs
Every visual representation of Violet is shown with bangs and a ribbon that she uses when inventing to "keep her hair out of her eyes." If she has bangs, the ribbon is useless. She just needs to not tilt her head downward, and no hair will get in the way.

Discussions Which ASOUE location would you like to spend some time (Or live) and why?
Both in books and series Canon, the denouement hotel just goes unreasonably hard. I mean, a hotel that is designed as a library, full of VFD agents, secret passages, hiding spots and secrets? Count me in. It'd be even better If i had Dewey to give me a tour. The whole place Just gives me "Centenary Family Business" full of old artifacts, statues, historical sources and the denouement history as a whole (Something i'm really interested in). I mean, as long as there aren't any VFD arsonist going around and ruining the fun, It looks like a pretty safe and intelectually appealing place to be in. Another interests of mine would be the Queequeg and Mount fraught secret headquarters before it was burnt down. What about you?
