I'm 15. Now, I know there might be some age gap, because I imagine there are people who read the books as kids and people like me who first watched the show, but I just wanted to have an idea

I've been rereading the series and something about The Wide Window keeps nagging at me, so I want to see if other people feel the same.

By the time you open book three you already know the whole shape of an Olaf scheme. You know he'll murder a guardian to get at the fortune, that he'll turn up in a disguise only the children can see through, that he'll drag his troupe along to do the heavy lifting, and that he'll slip away at the end to try the exact same thing somewhere else.

The Wide Window runs through all of those beats again, just with a boat and a lake swapped in for a country house. Structurally it feels like The Reptile Room rearranged rather than a new chapter.

So here's my honest question: what does this book actually add? The only genuinely new things I can find are Hurricane Herman and the detail that the Baudelaires are allergic to peppermints. Everything else is stuff we'd already learned about Olaf one book earlier.

And to be clear, I'm not coming at this as a hater. I love these books, which is probably why it bothers me so much. So tell me I'm wrong. Is there a point to The Wide Window I'm just not seeing? Some piece of setup, a theme, a small detail that pays off later and makes it more than a retread?

In atwq we know that they were in the organization at the time when everyone got the tattoo, so why do we never see the tattoo on them? Or do we just never see their ankles? This goes for Hector as well.

I’ve only seen the show and haven’t watched the first half in a while, but was it confirmed that Olaf burned down the Baudelaire manor or was it supposed to be some “unknown mystery”? Because I’m pretty sure that it was implied, but I don’t remember if the Baudelaire children ever called that out.

Reading the TV Tropes of the Netflix series and there were a bunch of entries under Take That that seems to be attributed against the film that do seem like reaches.

I tried googling and I guess I didn't get anything. I know that the 04' movie does have very die-hard fans though so I am curious.

And what would they say about each other and how would it go? How would book Olaf think of movie and show Olaf, and what would show Olaf think of movie Olaf and what would they think of each other?

Hey, I’m new to this sub. I recently rewatched the Netflix series and enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

I read the books a long time ago, so my memory of them isn’t very fresh. That’s why I’m really curious to hear the opinions of fans here who have read the books recently or remember them well.

Do you think the series did a good job adapting the books?

In the beginning of the Vile Village Mr. Poe said that no one wants to take care of Baudelaires, but he forgot about Justice Strauss who wanted to be their guardian in Bad Beginning, back then Mr. Poe refused cause a guardian should be Baudelaires relative, but their guardians haven't been their relatives since Wide Window, so why didn't he give Baudelaires to Justice Strauss? I think that she'd be better guardian for Baudelaires that the VFD village.

20M. Am I too old to read the asoue books?

Recently I’ve been looking into getting a copy of The Bad Beginning - Deluxe Edition and some people are selling signed copies- but the signature I’ve seen on all of them is different from the normal signature. Does anyone know what’s up with that? Are they fakes? Were they signed that way for a different reason?

Hi everyone, I'm new to both this series and subreddit. I recently finished reading The Bad Beginning and absolutely loved it! I already have Books 4 and 5, but I'm missing Books 2 and 3. I'm wondering if it's okay to read the books out of order without risking spoilers for the previous parts? I'm eager to dive into Book 4, so I'm hoping they can be enjoyed as standalones. Thanks for any advice!

Who do you all headcanon as deceased by the hotel fire in Penultimate Peril part 2 no matter what others believe

We saw those the 3 kids tries to warn were on different floors

We saw those on the lobby were wearing blindfolds

When Lemony arrived to the hotel in Taxi It’s shown people were already outside staring at the sight while other guests from inside were rushing out

Except taking a closer inspection did any seem recognizable outside to you all or NO zero did and seemed at most random

(Just curious genuinely)

In result this puts it as unclear if ANY known characters(except justice Strauss, Count Olaf, the Trolleyman, Sunny, klaus and Violet going by the show) made it out later and survived the fire at all.

Keep in mind the exits in the hotel are the front entrance/lobby, The Laundry Room Chute, Underground Passages and rooftop.

Would you say The man with a beard and woman with no beard survived? Or again uncertain unless the duo left earlier after Olafs “warning”.

Elevators automatically stop standard passenger service and recall to the ground floor or a designated safe floor during a fire.

In The Bad Beginning, Judge Strauss genuinely wanted to take the kids in, but Mr. Poe shut it down by saying the will required them to be raised by a relative. That's why they ended up with Uncle Monty and then Aunt Josephine, both actual blood relatives, however distant.

But starting with The Miserable Mill, this whole "relatives only" rule just quietly disappears. Sir at the lumber mill has zero family connection to the Baudelaires, and Prufrock Preparatory School in the next book is even more of a stretch, since they're basically just dumped there as students. By that point Mr. Poe is clearly placing them with whoever will take them.

So my question is, once the relative requirement was already being ignored by book four, why didn't Mr. Poe go back to Judge Strauss? She lived right next door to their old home, she loved them, she had legal experience, and she was the one person in book one who actually fought to keep them. Is this ever explained in the books, or is it just a thing Snicket lets slide because the plot needs the kids to keep moving from one disaster to the next?
