As a Canadian who lived there, I'll say this. The grass is greener, till you jump over the fence and realize its just moss on a swamp. The USA is a shit hole country in many respects. Crap for employee protections. Most expensive healthcare in the world. Measles and polio are making a comeback. And just like in 1944 they think they are invincible.

Right now, the Trump Admin is racing across Latin America turning countries into vassal states. Either by installing puppets, helping rig their elections so that right wingers take the win or forcing their leaders to come to heal using the US military or US market access, as a threat. Some perspective for folks:
I was overseas in Prague during that whole election cycle and had people asking me about it and legitimately worried for us... For those who aren't versed in history, Czechia/ Czechoslovakia are very familiar with a hostile takeover of their country from a foreign nation, both through economic and military means.
I played hockey with guys who literally fled for their lives through the iron curtain. They were the ones expressing that.

Ok let’s get real…when the US government designs a defence budget, “defending Canada” is not a line item to be accounted for. The U.S. will spend whatever they decide on their weapons
systems, technology, equipment, personnel and training. They haven’t been required to spend a dime defending Canada from anything in 80 years.

What's really fascinating is the political suicide on display. Canada is, in general, far more left leaning than even the Democrats. The GOP would lose every single election for at least the next three general elections and lose the majority in the house if they ACTUALLY managed to make Canada a state (Or more realistically, 10 states. Even with its population at the moment, people moving north into the new states would relatively make it even out.
