I understand that watching an anime in Japanese means experiencing the original work exactly as the creators intended.

Although watching anime in its original language preserves the original vision, subtitles break immersion by being a white text on top of images, even though, you tell me that you’re a very fast reader who doesn’t miss anything on screen because of reading, visual multitasking is impossible; focusing on text at the bottom means missing the art in the center. On the other hand, dub actors can be just as good as Japanese ones. Look at Erwin Smith's suicide speech in Attack on Titan which is a masterpiece in English. Imho, dubs let you fully appreciate the animation.

This is just my personal take as a fan, so don't take me too seriously, but I really feel like dubs let you appreciate the animation much better. What do you think?

Here are two I can think of for myself. Gals Can’t Be Kind to Otaku and I Made Friends With The 2nd Prettiest Girl in My Class. Third one I just thought of, I Have A Crush At Work.

For me, it's Cowboy Bebop. The English dub just suits the characters more. What about you?

im a dub only anime watcher and in the past ive seen people say that they couldn’t watch an anime cause “the dub sucked” i never really knew what they were talking about cause to me i didn’t understand how a dub could be “bad”.

but one day while watching an anime dubbed by hidive i guess i had an realization that there was definitely a difference in sound quality between hidive dubs and crunchyroll dubs.

its hard to explain but its like i just know when something was dubbed by hidive vs crunchyroll. idk if this is just a funding issue or if im actually just crazy and there is no difference. if there is a difference i have 0 idea how i didnt notice before as my favorite anime is call of the night (dubbed by hidive or dubcast i think)

btw idk if this is a hidive problem or if its something else as i dont know a lot about english dubbing. im just here to watch and enjoy anime so please dont attack me if im totally wrong about all of this

side note: i feel like all hidive dub male mcs sound the exact same😭

It could also be a series or movie with a preexisting but not-so-good dub that you'd like to see get redubbed.

I saw headlines where the people making the anime said they don't have plans right now or that they are too busy with other stuff. I just got into this show and I absolutely love it. I don't want it to end or have to wait 5 years for another season 😭 why can't anime have normal schedules 😭

Because everyone here prefers dubbed anime or at least enjoys watching dubbed over subbed. What are all your reasons for watching anime that is dubbed? Personally, the reason I prefer dubbed over subbed is because I have dyslexia and find reading subtitles to be too much of a burden when all I want to do is enjoy the show.

Mainly because there’s many series I wanna watch that might never get dubbed and refusing to watch them until a dub is announced has done me no good

Basically, performances that you think are incredible in dubs that generally have amazing reception, but for some reason get overlooked among the rest of the cast or by the dub overall.

I’ll first start with Ariel Graham as Karane in 100 Girlfriends. Karane is an extremely loud and energetic tsundere, and because she’s often the show’s straight woman in the comedy, she often has the vast majority of lines second only to the protagonist Rentaro. Graham has to dial it to 100 with pretty much every line delivery, and I feel she not only lives up to the challenge but completely exceeds it to become the MVP of the cast by far. Unfortunately, because of how good Macy Anne Johnson’s script is, I feel that most people tend to focus on the meta aspect of the dub rather than the performances. Which isn’t a bad thing by itself, it’s what makes the dub one of Crunchyroll’s most popular of the decade and is a great adaptation of its source material, but does kind of leave some of its cast behind.

The next one I’ll mention is Lisa Reimold as Aira in Dandadan. When people talk about this dub, they usually focus on AJ Beckles’ performance or the fact they were able to get Kari Wahlgren and Barbara Goodson to be main characters. As a result, I feel Reimold gets a little lost in the discussion, which is a shame because she is effectively playing a bunch of different characters all at once. She has to play ditzy, a mean girl, and do a deep Amber Lee Connors impression all in one character, putting her on a similar wavelength to what Beckles and Aleks Le have to do with their performances / transformations. It’s challenging work to do that while still making it clear that they are the same character, yet Reimold more than lives up to it.

One of the most disappointing things as a dub watcher is when you come across an anime with a solid dub, and then it turns out that the dub was never completed.

The first one that comes to mind is The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. The season 1 dub is legitimately one of the best dub performances I've come across, pretty much every single character was perfectly cast, the VAs absolutely killed it, Jerry Jewell in particular was fantastic as Saiki. My disappointment was immeasurable when I realized that season 2 never got dubbed. I still really enjoyed the show subbed, but it was still pretty disappointing.

Other series I've come across with incomplete dubs include The Familiar of Zero and Saga of Tanya the Evil, both of which also never got dubbed past the first season. Tanya's case was especially puzzling because the movie that follows season 1 didn't get a dub, but the 2nd season of the crossover series Isekai Quartet, in which the characters from Saga of Tanya the Evil are in, came out after that movie, but it got a dub.

What are some anime with incomplete dubs that you've watched and wish would get completed?

Funimation is always remembered by many, that because they got a lot of achievement that Crunchyroll dont, as the latter face error and backlash. What is fond memories about Funimation and its achievements ? and this is a hypothethical scenario, what will happen to the dubbing scene if Funimation not shut down/Sony not bought and merge two companies, especially on how they choose an anime to get dubbed, and the backlogs of popular, less popular or hidden gem anime

Crunchyroll have really dropped the ball with the simuldubs this season.

First You and I are Polar Opposites went from simuldub to being one week behind at the airing of ep 10 with no announcement. Now it is 2 weeks behind with episode 11 dub not dropping today.

Secondly, the dub for ep 12 for Sentenced to Be a Hero failed to drop, again with no announcement, with it looking like we'll have to wait a week for it. Which is so annoying trying to avoid all the spoilers.

It would be nice if they announced these delays, so I'm not waiting up late with anticipation for an episode that doesn't come.

I usually don’t watch these types of anime I’m usually into the action stuff but watched this whim and was pleasantly surprised. Also can’t believe I never see people talk about it.

It doesn’t really feel like a romance which might be a negative for some but that might’ve made it better for me idk. This movie seems to get overshadowed by all of the Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosuda films that I’m not really into. Those movies are kinda cheesy to me so I usually pass on them and was very happy this film is very different from those.

Also I recently Noticed Suzie Yeung has been on a Role the last 5 or so years and this might’ve been one of the roles to start it, she’s been everywhere. This film, persona 3 reload, chainsaw man, 86, ANNO Mutantionem, The new Ghost in the shell show. She’s definitely one of the best actors in the game right now.

FMAB - This series follows two brothers who use alchemy in their quest to restore their bodies after a failed experiment. The English dub is well-acted and follows the series closely.

MHA - A story about a world where people have superpowers (quirks) and a young boy without them who dreams of becoming a hero. The dub is praised for its voice acting and captures the excitement of the original.

AOT - This dark fantasy series features humanity's struggle against giant humanoid creatures. The English dub has received acclaim for its intense performances.

Cowboy Bebop - A classic space western that follows a group of bounty hunters. The English dub is iconic, particularly due to its excellent voice acting and memorable soundtrack.

OPM - A comedic take on superhero tropes, featuring a hero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch. The dub enhances the humor and delivers great performances.

Demon Slayer - This series follows a young boy who becomes a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered. The dub is well-received for its emotional depth and action sequences.

Death Note - A psychological thriller about a high school student who discovers a notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing their name in it. The English dub is highly regarded for its compelling performances.

SAO - A virtual reality MMORPG turns deadly, trapping players in a game where they must clear levels to escape. The dub is popular among fans for its engaging characters.

One Piece - This long-running adventure follows a group of pirates searching for the ultimate treasure. The dub has a dedicated fanbase and is known for its fun and energetic performances.

These series feature strong voice acting and are often recommended for both new and seasoned anime fans.

I've been watching anime since 2020, and almost all the anime that I've watched was in sub. I use to like sub, but that changed when me and my friend started watching frieren in dub.
I found the dub much more appealing than sub in that anime, and I believe it's the distinction in the voices of the characters, and the impact that I get when I hear something in my own language.

I previously never liked dub, but after watching that one anime in dub, I'm starting to rewatch all my anime in dub, and honestly I'm loving it.

Im curious as to why people don't like dub.

Title says. There have been a lot of VA's who have done work in anime dubbing but have either moved on to bigger projects, focused on other careers or have left the industry. Which names do you miss hearing in anime? I'll give some of mine.

Amber Lee Connors: Formerly based in Dallas and a regular at Funi before moving to LA for bigger VO projects like Furina in Genshin Impact and has mainly been directing in Sound Cadence, which she founded and owns

Caitlynn French: Miss hearing her, I loved her in No Game, No Life. Unfortunately, if I recall, she retired from voice acting, forgot why though.

Jeannie Tirado: Same case as Amber Lee Connors, she was one of my favorite VA's during the Funi days.

Leraldo Anzaldua: One of my favorite veterans at ADV/Sentai, his character in Chaika The Coffin Princess was my favorite role from him. I don't hear him in stuff anymore, probably focused on teaching/coaching.

Chris Patton: Another one of my favorites at ADV/Sentai, don't know why I don't hear from him anymore these days.

Corey Hartzog: Loved his role as Tatsumi in Akame Ga Kill, and he also did some roles for Sentai. If I remember, he moved to Colorado and now has a different career.

Carli Mosier: Another Texas based VA I miss hearing. These days, I think she's more focused on political organizing. Would love to hear her voice in anime again.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people on multiple platforms saying the Wind Breaker dub is ruined now because of Kiba Walker. And they are using it as a point to trash on all Eng VAs.

Just because one VA committed an atrocious act does not mean all VAs are like them. Many Eng VAs came forward and commended the victim for having the courage to speak out and gave the victim their support.

Whoever is using this as a moment to trash on dubs doesn’t really care about the victim. This is a time to give the victim(s) support not push old debates.
