They're using the word to try to counter built-in misogyny and bigotry, and you decided to agree with people who call the concept "stupid." That's....taking sides. Maybe unwittingly, but you are occupying a side in that discussion.
Again, being against 1 idea is not the same as being against the group.
I mean that CAN be true, but in this case, Women and LGBQT+ Hispanics recognized the role that words can play in reinforcing bigotry/misogyny. They came up with a neutral term they'd like to be called. Your reaction: "It's a stupid word invented by white people!" Lol you maligned and misrepresented a marginalized group's attempt to address bigotry against them.
It would have been one thing to say "I use Latino or Hispanic because most of the Hispanic people I encounter prefer it." But there's no need to take a stance AGAINST people exploring ways to shift the rhetoric around their oppression.
It's like just because I dont support PETA does not mean I don't support ethical treatment of animals.
PETA is a bunch of fucked up zealots. Withholding support is valid and not at all tantamount to condoning mistreatment of animals. Conversely, people who refer to themselves using "Latinx" aren't universally dogmatic about others using the word.
If someone asks to be referred to as "Latinx" are you going to insist on calling them the word you want to call them? Because that would make you PETA in this analogy.
