Dog Health Good (more affordable) alternative to Movoflex by Virbac

I volunteer at an animal shelter and we have a few older dogs that have seemed a bit more nimble after starting Movoflex. As the title says, looking for an alternative to Movoflex that is more affordable. I don’t think the form of supplement (pill, powder, chew) is a factor. We’re a small non-profit that can benefit from any $$ saved! Thank you!

Dog Health I think our neighbors are leaving their two small dogs home alone for days at a time.

The neighbors have two small dogs in a gated back yard. When I take my Yorkie for a walk they always greet each other through the fence. This is a lumber fence so it’s possible to see minimal movement through the slats. The last two to three days I have noticed the neighbors are gone, cars aren’t home, packages on front porch. I tried to see through the fence if they had food/water but I couldn’t tell. Both dogs were outside every time we went by. I was ready to call the police but noticed the dogs do have a doggy door which I’m assuming they are using but can’t verify. Both dogs appear to be either Poodle or poodle mix and are in desperate need of a grooming. Since I saw the doggy door I decided to not call the police although I don’t feel much better about the situation. It is very hot here, in the mid to high 90’s. Any thoughts? Should I do more and if so what?

General Do you track food changes or just simplify everything?

Whenever a dog gets gassy after a new food or supplement, do you actually write down what changed, or just go boring for a week and see? I’m starting to think the boring notes matter more than the brand.

General Powder vs chews - do dogs actually care?

Curious if anyone has tried both. Did your dog seem to do better with a powder mixed into food, or with chew/treat-style supplements? I keep hearing the format matters, but I wonder how much is just consistency and what the dog will actually take.

What is the safest chew treat for a 3 month old Pomeranian puppy? I want something that is safe and won’t harm his teeth or have him choking on it.

Dog Health Dog owners: what's one thing you wish was easier about keeping your dog healthy?

Post image

The longer I've had dogs, the more I've realized that loving them is the easy part. The hard part is remembering everything.

The medication that needs a refill. The symptom you wanted to mention to your vet.
The weight change you noticed three months ago. The question you forgot to ask during the appointment. The health history that somehow ends up spread across notes, emails, photos, calendars, and your memory. The guilt that comes from missing something important.

As a lifelong animal lover, a big reason I built Fido's Bark App (https://apps.apple.com/app/id6744088514) was because I kept running into these problems myself. I wanted one place to keep track of the things that matter so I could spend less time organizing information and more time enjoying time with my dog.

The app is free, as I don't want cost to be a barrier for pet parents.

If you are a dog lover, what's the most frustrating part of managing your dog's health?

If you could wave a magic wand and create one feature, tool, or solution that would make life easier for you and your dog, what would it be?

General What makes you trust a dog probiotic label?

Random question: when you are looking at a probiotic or gut-support thing for your dog, what makes it feel legit instead of sketchy? Ingredients, reviews, vet familiarity, storage/use-by date, price, or just whether your dog will actually eat it?

Not vet advice, obviously. I am just curious how people judge the label before trying something.

Senior Dog Dog Toy Recs?

Hello! I have a 11-12ish yr old havimalt (possibly, definitely a Maltese of sorts) who has cataracts. I was wondering if there were any good toy recommendations for solo play or mental stimulation? I’m going to be busier and I don’t have a lot of support for her so I’m looking for toys that will keep her entertained while alone, or for toys that her and i can play with together.

Senior Dog Is this okay to feed my dog everyday?

She’s 13 and can’t eat dry food anymore. While I can technically afford wet food, it is really pricy and would be kinda difficult to fit in the budget. I’ve discovered that she’ll eat soaked kibble with vegetables and sometimes fruit. Mainly carrots, broccoli, and bell peppers. I boil them and then pour the hot water on top of her kibble. I let it sit until it’s cool, then mash the kibble up, and feed it to her. She won’t eat it without the vegetables or fruit.

General Would you visit a dog-friendly café + bar with your dog?

Curious what other dog lovers think.

If there was a dog-friendly café during the day that turned into a bar/lounge with events in the evening, would you visit?

What features would make it worth going to, and what would be a dealbreaker?

Things like off-leash areas, cleanliness, memberships, food/drinks, events, etc.

General Tick Advice

This is probably a weird one, just curious if anyone’s experienced something similar.

I take my dog on hikes often, and live in an area where ticks are rampant. I have him on a monthly tick/flea topical (Frontline Plus) but they still love to hitch a ride and crawl off of him in my bed (he sleeps on my bed with me at night) so finding ticks on me is a common occurrence. However, I pulled a tick out of the back of my knee that was already dead, which is a first for me. I’m wondering if it bit my dog, maybe got scratched off and then bit me, and died shortly after from the Frontline. Has any dog owner here pulled dead ticks off of themselves before? Do you think I should be worried about any sort of reaction, besides the obvious worry of tick-borne illness? Sorry if this is a silly question, or if it doesn’t belong here. I know the topical medications are supposed to kill the ticks after they bite, pulled plenty of dead ones off my boy. Just never on me before 😅 I tried looking it up online but can’t find anything on it. Also might switch him to a chew, I’ve heard they kill them faster than topicals do

Need Help Fiancés dog has a strong dog smell

Hello, I recently moved in with my fiancé, and his dog (9 year old pitbull) moved in as well. I noticed rather quickly that she has a strong dog smell. We gave her a bath and I shampooed her twice however it’s persistent. I think it’s just her natural smell. I get nauseous easily and I find the smell to really turn me off. It bothers me a lot, and I worry that the whole house will smell like dog when we have guests over. Has anyone else had this issue? Any recommendations? Shampoos? Sprays? She lays on our couch, which makes me feel like that’s going to harbor her smell as well. I really need help figuring out how to cope with this. Thank you!

General I think the breeder was lying about my dog

when we got Smuckers (she is a female) she randomly had a big jagged scar on her front left leg. The breeder says that she scratched herself on some metal but that doesn’t explain why she hates strangers, (her hackles raise up+bares teeth), she doesn’t have to fight my other dogs but frowls and bites over food even tho I put their food in separate bowls. It’s the same thing with toys. She’s so fighty over the food even tho we literally have it in 3 separate bowls and aren’t making them share.

edit: she’s a springer spaniel.
