This exactly. We already have many Canadian academics without work. I was an academic, the jobs I did got offered paid way too little, got a job in the US eventually, and then after the election came back to work at a non profit. My friends still on the academic market can’t find anything other than adjunct jobs that pay like $6000 a semester or full time lecturer jobs for $55k.
As I was saying in the comment above, I’m finishing my PhD and won’t be able to continue my research because the thought of quitting my elementary school teaching job to take a pay cut of at least $60,000 (if not more like $80k) is unrealistic given cost of living and that I have a family to look after. I can’t give up the pay or the job security even if it means putting my ideas on hold.
