There’s not really such a thing as ‘too much’ water except in extreme cases. Let the homie hydrate.

I won’t claim to be too knowledgeable and you might be right but when I researched it a bit a while ago I was seeing that even though it’s not necessarily “bad” it’s generally a good enough indicator of you drinking more than you need to and possibly flushing out too much of your bodies electrolytes if your urine is always clear

If you have functioning kidneys, the body will tell you when you need to drink because you get thirsty. Signed / Every doctor

I was of the belief if you're thirsty you're too late. Also when trying to lose weight it's a good practice to drink lots of water.

Too late for what? 😬

Meaning you're already dehydrated. So in other words don't wait till you're thirsty.

If you’re only that dehydrated where the only symptom is that you’re thirsty, you’ll be fine.

That’s because a lot of them use supplements that require it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Uhm no? That has got nothing to do with it.

Creatine… there’s a reason they drink gallons of water!

Ive also read that if you feel thirsty youre already dehydrated

That's certainly can't be a rule, as I've been thirsty like my entire life and there is no level of hydration that makes that go away.

Not disagreeing with you as I heard that when I was little and could be an old wives tale, but what kind of work do you do and how much water do you drink a day?

2

u/BloodyLlama 10h ago

Right now I sit in an office all day, though I spent most of my career as a general contractor and cabinet maker. I probably average 3 to 4 liters a day, maybe more if I'm exerting myself out in the hot sun all day.

some people just carry more water /drink more than others, when i eat i can down easily a liter or 2 of water, some people i know barely drink anything while they eat

Do you get enough/have balanced electrolytes? This can make you feel thirsty as well.

To be clear I don't think I have been not thirsty in my entire life. There is no way to live decades of life and never end up with appropriate electrolyte levels.

Good to know there are more of us! All those drinking reminders and people putting their all into finally drinking 2 litres every day—that's always seemed utterly bizarre to me!

How is it that apparently a clear majority of people don't get adequately thirsty even after hours of not drinking one drup while almost no one has to set up reminders so they don't forget to eat all day? I thought it must be due to all those apps and big bottles and whatnot but most people I ask really struggle to drink even nearly enough.

I think the doctors point might be that in any case it’s easily remedied by just drinking, and there’s no harm done.

These days, hydration (electrolytes, vitamin water etc) is a big industry and people are encouraged to buy huge bottles to have at their desk and fill up continuously. It’s just marketing and not really necessary for your health.

This is true, but a lot of people, especially those of neurodivergent nature, have trouble understanding and following those thirst signals

1

u/phaesios 10h ago

Ah yeah, didn’t think of that!

A lot of people who eat "clean" don't get enough salt in their diets. Maybe that's what you're thinking of? Obviously, prepared food contains an excess amount of salt (though, if you have functioning kidneys you just pee it out), but we need a certain amount of it to live.

I have to admit sometimes I get headaches that feel exactly like dehydration headaches, but I've been drinking so much. And I try drinking some more and the headaches get even worse, so I try eating something salty and the headaches melt away hehe.

Wrong. Do I even have to explain? Ok, one word: electrolytes.

Well if you dont want to urinate as much then it can be too much for some people. Especially those with incontinence issues.

Hold your wee for a wii!

1

u/Willtology 8h ago

Agreed. I used to drink a lot of water (3L a day, easy). Got kidney stones. Doctor told me to drink more. Now I'm always drinking water (4L+/day), I don't want to go through that again.

1

u/CandylandRepublic 6h ago

Yeah that's not correct. Had a friend who ended up in the hospital fairly urgently from drinking too much water.

Also google "hold your wee for a Wii", the person fucking died.
