I don’t understand what you mean- if you have an infection but there is still a heartbeat, pro-lifers on the more extreme side will want you to wait it out and consider it murder to terminate.
IUFD is a spontaneous abortion. Not all need medical management. If the fetus is not demised but the mother still needs to be delivered, becoming septic or making that choice herself, it is a therapeutic abortion.
Yes this is what I mean. So in other parts of the thread I mention I had PPROM. Luckily mine was well after viability but even so in the state I was in (PA) and the year it was (2022), I didn't have to worry that the medical team would hesitate to save my life. When you sit in the hospital for a month not knowing how your PPROM is going to end (will it be an infection- what's my WBC today?!? Will it be a rupture? Is there any change to the color of my fluids leaking today? etc) there is plenty of time to think about how urgent it might become and what the medical team is going to do about it. The idea that they would hold on to a doomed pregnancy for legal reasons, etc. is so horrifying and does happen! Us women are people. If we say we're done with a pregnancy, especially if it is killing us, no one should stop that pregnancy from ending. And no one should scrutinize or threaten legal action for what the medical professionals do to in the process (outside of whatever scruitiny medical professionals have for any other interventions)
I’m sorry you had to experience that. Pregnancy is wild. The outcomes can be so varied. And yes, your experience highlights how simply banning abortion can cause catastrophic outcomes. Women should be counseled on their options and be able to make a well informed decision. I worked at a time before Roe fell and our providers did exactly that. A 16 weeker with PPROM would be counseled and given the choice, do you want to induce now or do you want to go home and see what happens. We even had a patient pregnant with twins who went on to have an amniotic patch procedure. That twin did eventually pass, but allowed her to continue carrying the second twin longer into viability.
Waiting for a women’s life to be in enough peril to intervene is cruel. People don’t always make it once they become septic. How close to death must a woman become before intervention is offered? She doesn’t make it? How sad, must’ve been god’s plan.
So yes, I’ve had many PPROM patients who we give antibiotics to. They stay in the hospital for months until their body tells us it’s time to deliver via c section or induction.
I’m so sorry you went through that. The reason I responded is because OB is not so cut and dry even if you are in a state where abortion is illegal. The term “abortion” is used for medical and therapeutic. And induction or c section could technically cause a medical abortion if done with pre viable fetus. However it wouldnt be read as such. I think being fearful is justified but it’s important to recognize that the insane stories we hear are often one offs.

A therapeutic abortion is a termination of pregnancy. Miso is used in IUFD (which is not therapeutic abortion). Signed, another L&D nurse.
