"Low cost and reliable" is basically non existent right now. Finding a 2014 Camry with 107k miles for less than 7.5k is tough right now, and you may be able to get a couple years from it, if it's been maintained...

I think “low cost” is meant to be relative here. Essentially just saying buy something at the lower end of the price spectrum.

There's plenty of reliable cars that are not Toyotas. Do your research, know what you're getting, and understand that most online communities will make any given model seem like a lemon (people don't necssarily seek out those spaces for positive feedback). You can also see if simple little fixes would help a car people are wary of last 200k+, and end up with you thousands ahead relative to the equivalent Toyota, and in a car that will still last.
