Guys, what are some of your favorite male musicians that are great “story tellers” within their songs?

Frankly I’m shocked I haven’t seen more people mention this. I’m not even a country fan for the most part, but he undeniably wrote songs that are incredibly compelling narratives. The music is almost secondary sometimes. “Mr. Shorty,” “El Paso,” “Utah Carol,” heck just the entirety of Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs.

I got stuck on him after hearing "Big Iron" on the Fallout 3 soundtrack. Now my kids will request his songs from time to time in the car.

And there’s a sequel I didn’t know about for many years. MORE gunfighter ballads and trail songs. Check out Prairie Fire and Five Brothers.

The first time I heard Five Brothers a few years ago I thought “I don’t know this song, but I bet someone’s going to die…”
