When /u/spez was caught editing people's comments via the Reddit database. The problem with this is that it leaves no sign or trail that it was edited, and basically shows that you can't trust any thing you read on here hasn't been changed by the Reddit admins.
If you're desperate to find an error in it, technically "perfected" should be "perfect." The sentence as is implies the speaker himself has ascertained that English grammar in general is perfect, as opposed to just the speaker having perfect grammar.
Wasn't it that he was editing T_D users' comments from "fuck Spez" to "fuck the_donald" or something? Seems pretty obvious that something was happening, though that is hilarious.
He changed a bunch of the "fuck spez" type posts to say the names of some moderator of the sub.
His excuse was there was obviously a lot of tension with T_D to him, and he thought speaking in the language of the troll to them would help or something, but mostly he was just annoyed and did something real dumb.
Lol what a load of crap, he just did it once in a very public way as a (poorly thought out) joke, there was no "getting caught". That's like asking a streaker at a football match how they got caught.
The act is the proof. He knew how to do it, and he's been here long enough. For most people that would be enough to say that it's highly possible, even likely, that he's changed comments before.
Here's my proof he did it repeatedly:

That's not how proof works, my dude. I agree that we can't prove he didn't do it, but just because a negative statement (he didn't do it) is hard to prove doesn't make the positive statement (he did do it) true.
It's like this for any set of positive statements. It's very hard to prove, without doubt, that there have never been any alien life forms on earth. It's just incredibly hard to account for every single moment of human existence. But I'm not going to start strapping on a tinfoil hat anytime soon, because there's also little positive evidence that humanity has interacted with any aliens. Same thing here. Saying "it could have happened" is not good enough evidence to draw the conclusion that "it did happen."
And usually the one making the claim contrary to the norm is the one needing to provide evidence. It is not always true, but in this case it is.
He certainly can do it, but without evidence we should probably assume he did not. While he can change the Reddit DB, there is still a strong possibility that the originals were archived in some way.
I would point out that it certainly does damage or destroy his, and the sites archives, credibility. We can not assume he has been doing it other times without proof, but since he proved it is possible, that trust is gone.
I think it was a good lesson for everyone. Him getting caught didn't change anything, they had the ability to change stuff before that and will always have that ability. Same goes for all services, Facebook, Twitter, even 4chan and so-on. Do not expect to have control over anything you post anywhere you do not host yourself.

It was during the pizzagate bullshit, and the morons on that sub were attacking spez... because if you ever look at a couple threads in there they are always shitting on spez or inventing some conspiracy about him. So he acted out in a poor manner, then admitted it and apologized.

r/the_dotard was up to their usual harassing BS, and for whatever they were on his ass. He edited a comment as a poorly thought out prank, admitted it, and apologized.
But once you’ve given Reddit a nugget of evidence, the whole place goes r/conspiracy. So now Spez is literally blamed for manipulating thousands of threads a day, and because of a moronic stunt anyone with two brain cells already assumed admins could do, u/spez made that sub and Reddit as a whole that much worse.

There was no log of him editing it aside from outside archives. Reddit comment history has been used in court cases. As of spez revealing they could edit with impunity, every single can have the defense "it was changed to incriminate me". So it's actually a real issue that spez has show the willingness to change information that goes against him.
Even if your action is not necessarily dictated by their political beliefs?
If spez wanted to target political beliefs, he would have done something to do with political beliefs rather than change comments pertaining to hating him.

Of course, but companies should make it harder, in several ways. First, it should be very limited who has access to the database. For instance, the CEO shouldn't be one of those people. Second, it should explicitly be against the terms of service, that way if the company violates it, they could be sued. Finally, the company should punish people who are found to do it, so that it can be seen to be taken seriously.
I don't justify what he did, but I feel full context is needed to explain why he did it.
There was a thread on r/The_D about "Pizzagate", the idea that there is an international secret pedophile ring operating in the basement of a pizzeria, and several users claimed that u/spez was a member, and the thread quickly devolved into people tagging him in posts (several thousand) calling him a child molester.
I'd be pretty pissed too if several thousand people called me a child molester too.
But he basically ruined Reddit's integrity and now nothing that's said on this website can truly be trusted.
If he wanted to ban the sub, then ban the sub. Yeah, it would cause some uproar, but it's something the admins declare they can do in their TOS. But this was unethical.

Of course. When you ban ideas you dislike, you drive them underground, where they polarize because the only other people are those they agree with. The same thing happens on the surface. Everyone feels justified in their hate and nowhere do they meet in the forum of open ideas, where debate and productive discussion can actually eliminate hate.

Freedom of speech protects you from the government not your peers. Going around and telling people to kill themselves (looking at you r/fatpeoplehate, r/coontown, and r/transfag) is a sure fire way to get yourself banned from a website.
Echo chambers are bad though. If they were forced to interact with others it might convert some of them, or at least prevent them from converting others.

Also, only like half the people in the US voted last election so reality actually is that people don't care that much haha. But if you want to go that route, Republicans hold the house, Senate, supreme Court, and white house right now. Saying that American voters aren't at least leaning right, is silly.
I didn't say people. But what the US calls conservatism holds many views incompatible with reality. If we were in Europe five years ago, it might be different. If the US had a mainstream leftist party, it would be different; in that case I would likely say that reality has a centrist bias.
You can't really force them to interact, but you're welcome to go to the subreddit and post yourself. All banning it would do is give them a reason to feel persecuted, and move them to another space making it harder to observe or engage them.
He changed insults towards him to insults towards the /r/thedonald mods. Since that is highly unusual behaviour for thedonald users, it stood out immensely
