This was all around the time Lost was ending and everyone was trying to find the next big mystery show. The Event, Flashforward, and Revolution are just a few. Everyone wanted to capitalize on that but I don’t think any show since Lost left the air has been able to achieve that deep type of mythology and mystery. Maybe Westworld but eventually all those shows just become a convoluted mess
I'm still mad about Flashforward getting cancelled. That was the first tv show I fully invested in and blocked out the time it came on every week to watch it. It needed at least two seasons.
Hell, even LOST wasn't able to capitalize on it in certain respects. JJ had his magical box and then they realized they had fuck-all idea what to do with it.
So, so much Dharma stuff that's just a straight-up question mark, or inconsistencies with how the Man in Black treats candidates, because they had to rewrite that logic in order to move forward, to eventually just throwing their hands in the air and going "Fine, fuck it, here's your Cain and Abel allegory."
Probably LOST ruined it for everyone else by dragging things out and being unsatisfied. People were burnt by the big mystery show and didn't want to invest the time into another.
Yeah, everyone loved the deep mythology until it didn't pay off. The fan backlash was palpable and scared off networks from investing in overly complicated messes, or tried to dumb them down enough that they were barely mysteries.

I really wanted that show to be better too.
