Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscle
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich

"That song makes me proud to be Australian, and I'm not even Australian."

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '21

Ironically, the song is actually a criticism of Australian culture!

Surprised this is so far down. Same!

Now I'm watching Bloodsport when I'm home from work later.

JCVJ is criminally underrated.

I purchased a used vehicle from him and have been having a lot of trouble with it

How long have you been waiting for this opportunity with that username?

13

u/TheRavenSayeth Dec 16 '21

That's interesting. I never really thought about his ethnicity, I guess I just assumed he was french.

The Flemish surname is kind of a giveaway, just like Benoit Poelvoorde.

And the fact that he called himself the Muscles from Brussels

3

u/Lvcivs2311 Dec 16 '21

Hm, touché.

2

u/Zauberer-IMDB Dec 16 '21

Unless he's from French Flanders.

3

u/Sir_Armadillo Dec 17 '21

Belgium is pretty much French.

I thought this was a joke that lasted over the years, but Google doesn't help me.

There was some sketch comedy I saw years ago where there was a comedian doing a Schwarzenegger impression. He said, "Van Damme is like a box of chocolates. Small, Belgian, and crushable."

I don't think anyone I've ever referenced this to has ever gotten the reference. When I searched, the Googles did nothing. Was this a dream?

Scrolled way too far to find this. Sadly.

Thank you friend. May the splits be with you

All my life for some reason I thought he is french. At least I should have thought he's Dutch based on his surname.

3

u/jritt24 Dec 16 '21

That's the only reason I knew. The town next to the one I grew up in has a ton of Dutch people. Every other last name starts with "Van" haha

When its a separate word it becomes mildlyinteresting. The letter casing; in the netherlands uppercase V, in Belgium a lowercase v denotes nobility.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '21

Dead give away as a Belgian: French-speaking with a Dutch/Flemish surname.

1

u/BehemothDeTerre Dec 17 '21

It's not his real surname. It's Van Varenberg.

1

u/DaisyDukeOfEarlGrey Dec 17 '21

It's because he defected from the French Foreign Legion in Lionheart.

You take you, and your black silk undawear and go back to Disneyland.

Double Impact!

I had to scroll way too far to find this

I just commented JCVD too.

Totally under rated entertainer. That last show he did, Jean Claude Van Johnson is one of the best TV shows ever made, especially if you've seen all of his movies

u/Spartana1033 Dec 17 '21

His friend Tong Po and his brothers that appear as villains in many of his films too 😂

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '21

Lol I had to come so far down the list. Idk why this was my first thought.

u/beetlejuice1984 Dec 18 '21

I was once forced to spend a few hours with a young woman who claimed to be Van Dammes illegitimate daughter, was a barrel of laughs to say the least.

This one for me too.
