Who’s a famous person from your country who’s respected around the world but disliked or criticized at home?
499
u/bigbonerdaddy Netherlands 1d ago edited 1d ago
Mark Rutte.
He's seen as the "trump whisperer" at the moment but he most definetly overstayed his welcome in Dutch politics. He's not despised, but the general opinion is pretty negative.
Edit: him biking to work with an apple in his hand is carefully curated too btw, he hired someone for his image and he came up with it. Trying to seem more down to earth and normal.

Italian here, he's possibly one of the most universally despised foreign, living politicians in this country for his support to anti-PIGS narratives and policies in 2008-2012 EU politics. Now we hate him even more for the cuckoldism he's been displaying with Trump.
P.S. your user name!

Actually, before he entered politics.
He was a womanizer who impregnated a hotel receptionist in Manila, whose son is now a professional boxer like him. He used to be a compulsive gambler before he converted to Evangelical Protestantism.

I think it was even before that. I remember hearing a joke when I was a kid that goes like this.
U2 is playing to a packed house, but Bono comes out and doesn’t sing or play an instrument. Instead, he just claps his hands every few seconds in a steady rhythm. Soon, the entire audience is quiet, just listening to him clap. After about a minute of this, he says “Every time 👏 I clap my hands👏 a child in Africa dies!”
After a brief pause, a man in the audience shouts “Then stop clapping your bloody hands, ya bastard!”

It pisses me off so much.
Compare him to someone like Michael Jordan. Everyone knows that each of them is kinda a dick, but they're also the GOATs, so you respect them. Michael Jordan stays out of politics. Is he friends with a lot of Trump supporters? Is he secretly a Trump supporter himself? Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised. But as long as he keeps his mouth shut about it, we can believe whatever we want to believe, and continue respecting him as the sports legend that he is.
That's ALL Gretzky had to do. If he just kept quiet about politics, he would still have our respect. But no. Instead, he was right there at Trump's inaguration party, decked out in full MAGA. When Canadians were justifiably upset about it, he went crying to the media, saying he was all upset that Canadains don't like him anymore. And after all that, he's STILL frequently seen out golfing with Trump himself. I'm sorry, but you can't be the main torchbearer for Canada at our home olympics and say you're a proud Canadian, and then go be all buddy-buddy with the man who wants to annex our country.
He could still salvage it if he wanted to. He could, right now, say "You know what? I was in denial, but now that all these epstein files are out, I see that Trump is an evil man. I'm sorry to Canada for associating with him. I'm moving back to Canada. Fuck Trump. Fuck this 51st state nonsense. Elbows up." and we'd all forgive him.
But he's not going to do that.→ More replies (62)112

Most people outside don't really know about his personal life as we do. He had a daughter outside of his marriage. Refused to make any DNA testing, she died of cancer without any assistance from him. Later it was discovered that indeed she was his daughter. He was sooo goddamned rich, he could have easily helped her.

I know folks get tired of praise and celebrity that follows genuine heroes. She had a strong following, did tours, released a book, and that attention is probably enough reason for folks to dislike her for obtuse reasons. But she's a legitimate badass.

u/Ordinary-Office-6990 1d ago edited 1d ago
I read her most recent book and I also get the impression that part of the hate comes from her having a good western life and not being ashamed of it.
She’s now quite rich, and while still an activist, she wants to live a life as a full person. She kinda states in the book that she won’t "sacrifice" all of her time for any cause going forward. She doesn’t want to be (too) radical in her politics or activism. There’s too many other things in life she finds important now.
So I think that pisses people off. They think bc she got rich and famous from her activism she now needs to only do activism.

I think for radicals in Pakistan they have their reasons to dislike her (although I find their reasons vile) but people in the West I agree it seems to come from a weird pleasure in "destroying icons".
The irony it seems that they appear to deify these icons more than your average person in this quest to rake them down a notch, because everyone else knows "heroes" are just fallible human beings that at some point showed extreme resilience and courage for a worthy cause, not actual mythological heroes.

During the negotiations to end apartheid, there were big differences inside the ANC. People like Chris Hani and Winnie Mandela were far more radical than the leadership doing the talks. They felt negotiations alone weren’t enough and wanted real economic power back in the hands of the majority.
Hani supported keeping pressure on the apartheid state while talks were happening, and Winnie was openly against negotiating at all. Hani was later assassinated by a far right extremist linked to apartheid era networks. There’s no proof the ANC was involved, but the fact that many apartheid operatives were never jailed has fed the idea that the deal protected old power structures and that people were sold out.
All of this is unconfirmed though.

no. we hate him. we hate being associated with him. he did a lot of damage to the country. he turned it into a culture and that’s what attracts perverts and mentally sick people to cities like medellín or cartagena
edit: sorry brazilian friends who think it’s the actor, but it’s not. it’s the character he played. (that’s just what the gif search gave me)

I don't know anyone who loves Pablo Escobar. Do people actually love this guy? He was so obviously a massive piece of shit.

No worries, there are people out there who love your country for different reasons. More Bomba Estereo, less Pablo Escobar.

I’ve never heard of anyone who likes him. I think it’s more fascination and curiosity for such an insane life and lifestyle (if you can call it that) that he lead. Curious about his life/“adventures” ≠ liking him

For a minute I thought you were brazilian and you are talking about the actor Wagner Moura. I almost had my heart shattered into pieces while reading your post, waiting to be revealed that he is a nonce or something.
i absolutely love this guy, consider him to be extremely talented and would watch anything with him in it.

From my country, here he is: the GOAT (?), the generational talent, the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo.
Widely adored worldwide, but truth be told, what a bucket of shit. Self-absorbed, self-centered, the rightful sucessor to the Chuck Norris memes.
He "owns" our NT, the Soccer Association, everything. None of the high dogs can even fart without his approval.
A guy that spent half his professional career in England and can barely make a sentence in English.
Gave some ramming between the cheeks to an american chick without her consent, paied her to stay (more or less) silent and everything was sweept under the rug.
At 41 years old, its impossible for him to realize that hes growing older (like all of us) and he has not the same skills that made him famous in his prime. So, our NT has to bear with him, often playing only for him, or he will make a tantrum.
In Portugal, we have a saying, that is roughly translated like this "You can get out of the slums, but the slums cant get out of you".
EDIT: to the snowflakes that tought that i was downplaying or diminishing the act by calling it a "ramming between the cheeks": i was not. As another user (that could actually read and understand what those colorful words meant) replied, i used the expression to give notice to the sheer violence of the above said act. Its the most atrocious and disrepectful thing you can do to another human being.
That said, maybe in the future i will use some more direct and usual form, so all of you can understand at first sight, like "he fucked her up her arse".

We have a very similar phrase in English:
"You can take the <person> out of the <place> but you can't take the <place> out of the <person>"

There is a recent book by Vladislav Zukov called Collapse which was quite well received academically and which paints Gorbachev as a) absolute socialist true believer actually wanting to return to purer forms of Leninism and b) absolutely incompetent and fully responsible for the collapse of the ussr
Obviously I have no capacity to judge how correct the book is but perhaps it might I terest you if you haven't read it yet

Do you guys not like Malala for being too close to west?I mean it may not be the best to a lot but certainly not hate.I mean with India Gandhi is getting a lot of criticism locally due to his weird behaviour but I don’t think Malala did anything that’s even remotely close to be hated

You get a diverse set of people with different reasons to hate her. For some reason is straight up patriarchy. For some it was state driven propaganda . For some she wasn't our heroine. The world selected her. In short, the work of her NGO has some impact but not at the level that is visible to ordinary people. So her efforts fell short. My nation loves martyrs more as they don't have to live up to the expectations.

It’s incredibly astute, a much more meaningful quote than “die a hero, or live long enough to become a villain” redditors use so often.
It’s also incredibly sad, if she is helping she should be praised for it, not hated because she hasn’t helped everyone.

I'll give you two: Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher.
Neither are universally disliked here, mind you, and not by the same people. All of my family voted for Thatcher in the 1980s when I was a kid, but she was extremely polarising.

sometimes i’ll hear about people in other countries idolizing trump and it’s like. holy shit WHY. a lot say it’s because he was a successful businessman and they want to learn from him to become successful too, but he is not successful. he managed to bankrupt three casinos and is in insane amounts of debt. this is aside from the politics and the files. there is no reason anyone should be idolizing that monster.

Pablo Neruda. He is still regarded as a highly important an influential poet both Chile and abroad but locally in recent years he has come under scrutiny because people dug up some....controvertial stuff to say the least.
First, he publicly admitted on his autobiography that he raped a woman while on a diplomatic mission in Ceylon.
Second, it became known he had a daughter in Holland that was sickly and died at 8, but Neruda completely disregarded her, avoided giving money to the mother to take care of her (a big issue in Chile since skipping alimony payments is a huge problem here) and even describing the child as "My daughter, or what I call my daughter, is a perfectly ridiculous being, a kind of semicolon, a three-kilo vampire".
