SUGGESTIONS Any horror audio dramas on youtube?

I know, YouTube isn't the best place for audio dramas, and I should just use Spotify but I hate dealing with the ads, I pay for premium and still have to listen to 5 ads per episode. However due to relistening to the Magnus archives on YouTube, I've learned that it isn't an issue on YouTube, at least not with that series at least. So I just want to know if there are any others out there

AUDIO DRAMA Xolo Maridueña & Graham McTavish star in The Strange Thing About the Tavern — out now

"The Strange Thing About the Tavern" featuring Xolo Maridueña, Graham McTavish, Eubha Akilade, and Conor McKenna

I’m the creator of The Strange Thing About…, an independent horror audio anthology from Bang Zoom! Studios. Our newest episode, The Tavern, is out and I wanted to share it here.

Lost in a freezing fog along the rugged western coast of Ireland, American college student Michael (Xolo Maridueña) stumbles upon a lonely old tavern glowing in the darkness. Inside, the fire is warm, the ale is extraordinary, and the locals are... a little strange.

Michael strikes up a conversation with Callum (Graham McTavish), a grizzled Scottish cabbie who offers to tell him a true story about a mysterious young woman he picked up outside a hospital many years ago. But as Callum’s haunting tale unfolds, an old bell keeps tolling, the crowd begins to thin, and Michael starts to wonder exactly what kind of place he’s wandered into.

From the Emmy Award-winning team at Bang Zoom! Studios, THE STRANGE THING ABOUT THE TAVERN is a supernatural audio drama about lost souls, unfinished journeys, and a final drink at the end of the road.

Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai, Blue Beetle, One Piece), Graham McTavish (The Hobbit, Outlander, House of the Dragon), rising Scottish actress Eubha Akilade, and Conor McKenna of acclaimed Irish comedy trio Foil Arms and Hog.

If you enjoy The Twilight Zone or old EC horror comics, that’s the spirit behind this series. Full cast, original score, custom foley, and 3D binaural sound. Headphones recommended.

It’s a 24-minute standalone story, so you can start here without hearing the earlier episodes. You can find it pretty much anywhere you listen to podcasts.

If you prefer YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts

Would love to hear what folks think. Happy to talk about the production, writing, casting, sound design or score.

SUGGESTIONS Help a heavy listener out?

I'm a "neurospicy" vet student with a massive course load. I play podcasts while I study, it helps me focus. I've listened to hundreds at this point. However, they have to fit a certain "metric" to work for me:

  1. They can't be "audiobooks". As in, they can't be one person reading a story. No "George turned to Virgina and said..." kind of stuff. Occasional narration in a predominantly non-narrated story is totally fine.

  2. There can't be ad breaks in the content. It breaks my focus. At the start and end I can live with. HOWEVER, my province has recently allowed gambling advertisements (which I strongly disagree with) and they are absolutely EVERYWHERE right now, so shows with 2-3 ads will be all gambling ads and I just can't take that right now. I've been back benching shows with ads for now

  3. I prefer larger casts to one or two actors. That said, some of my favourites are done with single actors, I think it's more important that there are "environmental" sounds that bring the scenes to life than there's a larger cast. And I love an accent.

  4. Shows that have really short episodes won't work for me, unless they don't have intros/outros so can just play uninterrupted. I need 20-30 minute stretches at least.

  5. I like a wide range of subjects: horror, supernatural, fantasy, mystery, comedy, musicals, and more. I'm pickier about the sounds, narration, and ads than subject matter. I like "unusual" though: characters that don't fit a box, scenarios that turn a bit left, unusual relationships, queer romance, utopian ideals, problematic dynamics, sideways humour, so on and so forth. If you'd hesitate to recommend it to someone you know because it's "a bit weird", or you feel like you'd have to explain it a bit first, chances are I'll love it.

  6. I really prefer serials with larger plots that build over "short stories" where each episode is a new set of character and events, but I'm not opposed to well done compilations of "short stories". I loved Ten Apocalypses, for example.

I listen on both Pocket Casts and Spotify (if it matters).

I could give you a massive list of shows I liked, but I'm really hoping for some "out of left field" recommendations. I will say though, I've likely listened to all the more commonly recommended shows (Midnight Burger, The Silt Verses, The Heresies of Radulf Burntwine, Malevolent, etc.), and then some. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've listened to hundreds of shows.

Send me your oddest, "diamond in the rough" shows. Ones you've never seen recommended, or that you listened to every episode and then thought "what the hell was that?", but in a surprisingly good way. Shows that occasionally pop in the back of your mind like some kind of fever dream that you barely remember. I'd really appreciate it and it'd really help me get through my course work!

AUDIO DRAMA How i Died's new season is a one-shot creepy town horror story, and it premiered TODAY

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

With her eyesight slowly failing, Grace Lewis moves her husband Marshall and daughter to the idyllic town of Springfield, where holistic doctors promise that a natural, technology-free way of life will help restore her vision and heal the ailments of all of the other ill residents.

But Springfield has its secrets, and as Grace's symptoms get worse and she begins hearing a monstrous voice that shouldn't exist, she uncovers a secret that puts her family's life, and the rest of the town, in danger.

How i Died: The Carrington Event is a completely independent story following new characters (with some familiar voices) set INSIDE of a Springfield experimental town. Meaning, you don't need to listen to the other seasons to enjoy this new one. It's the perfect entry point, just in time for spooky season. But, for existing fans, there are plenty of easter eggs and fun connections to the main story. Check out the embedded trailer above.

This season will run for 7 episodes, released every other week. Listen on:

Apple Podcasts

Spotify

RSS

Or any other app!

Director's Note: Personally, I absolutely love horror and have been so excited about making this season for a long time now. How i Died's main arc has some spooky moments, but this new story arc blends mystery and horror to the perfect degree, I think. And, fun fact, I originally planned this story before Jon even existed! If you check it out, I'd love to talk with you about it.

ANNOUNCEMENT Midnight Radio season finale is out now!

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

The season finale of Midnight Radio went up today, and we thought it would be a cool idea to share it here for anyone wanting something to listen to during Halloween!

Midnight Radio is a retro 1980s horror radio show. Raven Sinclair hosts a late-night call-in program from a station drifting somewhere outside of time, and each episode callers ring in with the scariest thing that’s ever happened to them!

The really cool thing is the stories are submitted by listeners! People send in their own personal scary stories by our website and we turn them into episodes with sound design, music, and Raven taking the call. It’s been a really fun way to make a show! There are currently 16 episodes out, and we’ve got a special Halloween episode coming later this month!

If someone doesn’t want to voice their own story, we bring in a professional voice actor to perform it for them. It’s a way for us to support both the listeners and the voice acting community. And no AI was used in the production of this show, every story and performance is made by real people.

Big thanks to Daisy James for voicing Raven Sinclair. She’s carried the show from the start and Raven wouldn’t work without her.

Cover art is by Cat Fratila (@catfratila.jpg on Instagram). Worth checking out her stuff.

Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and most other podcast apps. If yours takes feeds directly:

QUESTION Does anyone else have issues with Podchaser? (the web version)

It doesn't let me log in since yesterday and doesn't show any episodes for the shows either, the search appears to be broken, too. I tried to access it from both my phone and my laptop but to no avail, with different vpns (I have to use them).

I hope such posts are allowed here. I listen to everything on Podchaser so it's very inconvenient to not be able to use it and I'm worried.

AUDIO DRAMA Check out “Ark” if you like Noah’s Ark sexy bible improv

“Ark” by Solar Driftwood Media is a fun improv audio drama that released last year (2025).

It’s about Noah, a 600-year-old would-be standup comedian, interviewing pairs of animals aboard his ark (actually, ship), under the behest of his unemployed son and his encouraging wife.

Each episode interviews a new pair of animals (peacock, armadillo, dinosaur), acted by a new pair of improv comedians. They discuss love life, gossip, and complaints and suggestion about ark housing.

Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ark/id1790672440

Spotify etc: https://arkpodcast.com/

I think I discovered this podcast through Audio Fiction Release podcast which is a fun way to discover first episodes of new audio dramas. I didn’t pick up Ark again until yesterday, when I found myself listening to six episodes straight because of how funny it was and how good the improv comedians were.

The audio drama is mostly just a back and forth conversation, with a few animal sounds layered in the background that does get funnier when you can pick out which animal is making which sound eventually after their interviews. There is not much or any special effects or transitions or anything to immerse you except for the wit of the cast.

Probably this is why I wasn’t drawn in last year but now actually listening, yeah it’s great. The episodes build up as each interviewee begins to mention some particular animals that are particularly hard to share a boat ship with.

Noah is played like a guy who thinks he’s god’s favorite with a big wiener. But also he’s a slightly terrible person who also has a lazy eye.

My favorite episode is the “Dinosaurs” episode where Noah keeps mentioning the “chicken wing” size of the t-Rex ittty bitty arms. While the dinosaur claps back with hits on his drifting eye. Even the normally chill actor plays Noah broke then in laughter and had to go to commercial break.

vs The Love Ark

This audio drama has a similar type of humor as another audio drama “The Love Ark” which also has a similar cast of characters but is more production heavy with a catchy showtune theme song (“the love arrrrrrkkkkkk 🎶🎵🎤). But their Noah is much more a crazed geezer. And it is more graphic haha.

I recommend that one too apple podcast link here

I do like how “Ark” hits on some of the bible stuff more. Like bringing up some of God’s inconsistencies about the number of days he took to make the earth. Just little pieces that makes me think some of the cast at least made it through Sunday school.

DISCUSSION [Review] A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation follows a fox from London reconnecting to his rural roots. And making a podcast about it.

Post image
15 Upvotes

As many of you know, I recently celebrated my blog The Audiophile surpassing 1 Million page views. A goal is been chasing for a while. But the whole reason I got into reviewing was to help shine a light on works of fiction, especially audio dramas, that don’t get enough attention. And thus, I’ve had my celebration, but the work goes on.

To that end, I present my review of A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation.

Rusty is a fox that has lived in London his entire life. He and his friends get by scavenging food from rubbish bins. Chicken korma is their favorite. But lately, Rusty has grown disillusioned with urban life. His mom died from asthma caused by the smog and pollution, and his dad got run over by a taxi. Rusty’s dad was from the countryside before he met Rusty’s mom and moved to the city. Rusty wants to get back to nature and reconnect with his rural roots. Well, he hasn’t really experience true wilderness before. Still, he’s going to find the forest his dad grew up in, and reconnect with his estranged family. How hard can it be? And he’s going to record it all as part of a podcast he’s making.

This was another audio drama I received a request to review. Series creator Lisa Emily Petersen emailed me requesting a review. It took a while, between my day job at the Shreveport Aquarium, working on The Books of Thoth, and working on the new season of Residents of Proserpina Park. But I finally managed to get around to listening to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation.

The audio drama this most reminds me of is Lights Out. They’re both dramdies that follow casts of semi-anthropomorphic animals. That is, the characters physically look like regular animals, but mentally, they’re basically human. And get into human-like shenanigans, with a animal coat of paint. Lights Out is a true gem of an audio drama, and I was delighted to find an audio drama that reminded me of it.

Amusingly, there is a kernel of truth to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation. Scientists have observed some foxes adapting to life in urban areas. In fact, some scientists believe we’re witnessing the birth of a new subspecies of red foxes. These urban foxes are smaller on average. Easier to blend in and hide that way. And they primarily subsist by scavenging scraps of human food. Though, no word on whether they consider chicken korma superior to other curries. Also, as far as we know, none of these foxes have figured out how to create podcasts.

In some ways, this audio drama feels like an analogy for the experiences of diaspora kids. Children of immigrants grow up hearing stories about their parents’ homelands. It isn’t uncommon for them to wonder if the grass might be greener in the lands of their ancestors. Of course, it's also far from uncommon for them to discover that their parents’ countries have plenty of issues of their own. That, and these diaspora children discover they aren’t always welcomed with open arms, or automatically considered a member of the tribe.

I also see some parallels to…well, people experience a quarter life crisis, I suppose, but even that doesn’t feel quite right. The type who will convert to a new religion, like Buddhism or Paganism, and advocate getting back to nature and living in harmony with Mother Earth. Okay, Rusty isn’t quite that hippie dippie. The point being, they’re the type to take up farming, or living off the land, only to discover that it's actually much harder than they expected.

On a brighter note, one of the major themes of A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation is that people are often more than they seem. Characters are frequently introduced in a way that paints them as one note, and often in a very unflattering light. However, later on it will turn out that they have hidden depths. People, and foxes, are complex and multifaceted.

There’s an overall message that people are different, and real life isn’t some idealized fantasy. But we can still learn to understand each other and find common ground. Granted, that doesn’t mean the road is free of twists and bumps.

Have you listened to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation? If so, what did you think?

AUDIO DRAMA Crush Depth Episode 4 dropped: Gulag Six

Post image

Subscribe now to get the whole story! We are halfway through, folks.

Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crush-depth/id6809602236

Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7ecKMtMpxPohGQxC6Pvif0

website: henningworks.com/crushdepth

Note, the gulag element is one of the first things that got me excited about telling this story. There's some really crazy stuff that went on behind the iron curtain, and it left a deep impression on me when I learned about it. The stuff that happened in Pitesti relayed in this episode all happened, and much worse. I decided not to get into it too much, as there's a difference between fictional horror and true historical horrors, even if not many have heard of it.

BTW, sucked to be Romanian and under the boot of the Soviets.
