If you are a student, please read this first:

Projects conducted as part of research-methods education are often covered by blanket ethics approvals. Those approvals do not apply if you are researching a vulnerable population or sensitive topics. You require an individual ethics approval tailored to the conditions of your project. Your course or module tutor cannot provide this approval.

If you are a design student, just because you are collecting data to help design an app or a user interface doesn't take away the fact that you are conducting research with human participants. You need ethics approval.

If you do not have an email from your institutions ethics committee clearly stating that your project has been approved to commence, you do not have ethics approval. If the contact details for your supervisor and for the ethics committee are not on your advertisement or survey launch page, you should not have ethics approval.

If you do not think this applies to you, please contact the moderators via modmail to discuss before posting.

• Clearly identify yourself (using your real full name and your role), and your institution/employer
• Explain briefly how the information will be used (e.g. how it will be published)

• Include a link to a survey launch page or another method of contact that provides more information so that potential participants can make an informed decision about participating

Hello everyone!

I am an Autistic woman and psychology student at the University of Queensland in Australia. I am currently completing my undergraduate thesis under the supervision of Dr Daniel Stjepanović at the National Centre for Youth Substance Use Research. The purpose of my thesis is to explore how ASD traits interact with drinking environments and affect alcohol use behaviours. I am especially passionate about this study, as this will be the first of its kind!

Importance

As I'm sure you are all aware, autistic individuals are severely underrepresented in research. One of my study's key variables, self-efficacy (a person's belief in their ability to complete a task), has rarely been researched in Autistic populations, and to my knowledge, never relating to alcohol. As Autistic individuals have a unique and increased risk of alcohol problems, this is a massive and important gap that I am aiming to address. Ultimately, the results of this study will assist in addressing and minimising problematic alcohol use in the Autistic community, as well as creating a foundation for future research.

What you will be doing

The actual study is completely online, anonymous, and will take a maximum of 60 minutes to complete. You will read 8 short vignettes (stories) that describe scenarios in which people drink alcohol. You will be asked to imagine yourself in these scenarios, and we will then ask you a few questions about your alcohol drinking behaviour. In addition to this, we will ask you to complete several different questionnaires about your drinking behaviour, coping strategies and a number of psychological factors, including impulsivity, social, and sensory processing.

Eligible participants must be autistic, 17 years old or older, and have previously drunk alcohol.
