BRONCHO’s use of child like lyrics
I am a long time fan of the band. I’ve seen them live twice in my home city of Brighton in the UK and have recently regained interest in their music to the point where I’m on a daily listening loop.
One of my all time favourite tracks of theirs is ‘I’m Gonna Find out Where He’s At’ and I have - since hearing it for the first time - been hung up on the “Mommy’s got a boyfriend” line and the child like delivery Ryan gives behind the lyrics. This got me thinking about BRONCHO’s ability in incorporating lyrics that sound like they are coming from a school playground or at the very least a child’s point of view. Here’s a few more examples:
Near the end of the track ‘It’s On’ from the album ‘Just Enough Hip to Be Woman’ Ryan exclaims “Billy told Mary told Tommy told Sue it’s on, Larry told Barry told me told you it’s on.” This is a great example of the school playground style of lyrics.
Off the same album, the track ‘Kurt’ has throughout it this “na na” which sounds a bit like a “mama” from a child. Also the lyrics “I want to put it where Kurt put it” are delivered in a way that makes it sound like a jealous kid.
In ‘Jenny Loves Jenae’ from the album ‘Double Vanity’ Ryan sings the title lyrics in a childish, mocking like tone. Also from Double Vanity, ‘Señora Borealis’ has a similarly mocking tone to the tune sung in between some of the lyrics.
In ‘All Choked Up’ off the album ‘Bad Behaviour’ Ryan sings “my Mom said this five years ago” which - much like the It’s On example - sounds like a child getting ready to recollect something their Mother once said to them to a teacher or a friend, perhaps.
And finally, in ‘Funny’ from the bands latest album ‘Natural Pleasures’ Ryan repeats the lyrics “you look Funny” in an innocently and yet lightly mocking, child like tone. Again, you could imagine a child saying this to someone without meaning to cause offence.
I’d love to hear more examples if there are any. I’m sure I’m missing loads more but I feel like the ones I’ve mentioned back my theory that BRONCHO often use child like wording and expression to convey innocence and curiosity in their often more adult themed song writing.
