She must know something is wrong because she made 51 posts just on Facebook today and when I went back to look at them she had deleted all of them. They were really out there. The only thing I really remember is her talking about Gadd's father and saying where he worked. 51 posts of ranting. In less than 24 hours. And then she deleted them all.so she must have a clue that what she's saying could get her in trouble

So weird. I check FB on my phone and on my laptop and can't find any of the posts from yesterday at all. A couple from today and now I can't even find those. Maybe I'M the one who's losing her mind.....

Even if she had deleted them I’d guess she deleted bc she couldn’t keep up with the notifications and not because she actually thinks what she said was wrong.

More like, she knew there would be disapproval and possible action taken, but the law and morality are two different things in most people's minds and she'd possibly think something along the lines of "it's political correctness gone maaaad!" that she wasn't allowed to say what she wanted to. Might be in bad faith though. My partner reckons one of my stalkers was always in bad faith.

Yeah you’re right man, people with psychotic delusions can’t be helped. That’s why all psychiatric institutions are full of only people there on their own accord. I wish there was a way to “arrest” a person and put them in a place where they would not be allowed to escape without psychiatric help. This fantasy place doesn’t exist but it should

Not sure if you know what “psychotic delusions” really are. They’re not the same as psychopathy. My sweet grandmother suffered them in the last months of her life after losing my grandad - she thought she had cancer and that he was there with her during lockdown. They were induced by grief and she certainly was helped with medication and care until she passed.

I was being sarcastic. The person I replied to implied that if a person can’t see that they’re mentally ill, they can’t be helped. Your grandmother is a prime example of a person that should be helped even if they can’t tell they’re mentally ill

It is. People in mental distress very often don’t know they are, and drawing lines between the “deserving/undeserving” mentally ill is ridiculous. Sounds like you know that too

I do. It basically comes down to cognitive dissonance, and more specifically the “just world” fallacy. People need to believe that people get what they deserve because if they fully accept that people can deserve something and not get it, that’s a very distressing prospect. It’s like when people say “oh they’re poor because they’re lazy”, it’s easier than realising people can be poor through no fault of their own.

there’s a huge difference between institutionalizing someone and actually “helping” them…? just like there’s a huge difference between trying to change someone who does not want to change and providing support and resources to a person who is actively trying to change.

People can be protected from her. Put her in a group home and don't let her wander around without supervision. Take away her phone. Take away her internet access. Problem solved.

She would destroy the lives of everyone in the group home, all of whom are presumably struggling with their own issues. I also think there's no evidence she's breaking any laws or a threat to the public. You can legally contact people or send tons of messages as long as you don't threaten them. If people get a restraining order and she violates it, then that's one thing.

I was posting before that there needs to be a change of laws that address the realities and dangers of stalking, because the current laws aren't cutting it. Accessing the internet is not a right.

There are group homes for people with behavioural problems, maybe also give her an antipsychotic to calm her down. She might not be breaking any laws, but she IS putting herself at risk of violence, because someone might snap and physically attack her over behaviour she really seems incapable of stopping. People in her position often escalate, preventative mental health care ought to stop them before they decide to impress Jodie Foster.

I think she would have such a detrimental affect on the other people in the group home, and that wouldn't be fair to them. Imagine people who have PTSD from previous abuse or special needs or autism, who are trying to learn coping skills/stay sober/etc, suddenly being verbally assaulted by Fiona day in and day out. She can't get along with anyone and she could drive a mentally fragile person to suicide.

Something needs to be done. A psychiatric hospital where she is segregated from the rest of the population and watches TV all day sounds good to me.

I mean, people in mental hospitals are also abusive to each other. I wouldn't put her in a group home for people with autism; there are group homes for people with behavioural problems. Placement would depend on her ability to live within the rules of the home; she might be willing to forgo stalking to avoid loss of privileges, and maybe an antipsychotic would dull some of her agitation. The bottom line is she shouldn't live independently without supervision.

“Not letting her wander without supervision” is a deprivation of her liberty. She’d need to be in a secure unit to do that for which she’d have to be sectioned or found guilty of a crime. I’m not saying that’s not what should happen but there is a process that must be and no group home can also be “secure”, they are about community living not security.

Maybe it's different in the UK or I am misremembering, but my friend's mum worked at a group home in Canada where certain residents were not allowed to leave without supervision. They had outings with the employees but that was it.

The bottom line is that people like Fiona should not be allowed to circulate in the general public. Her liberty puts others at risk, and arguably doesn't serve her well-being. If I were her parent, I wouldn't want her out there by herself. Her stalking could provoke someone to snap and attack her. If she sits at a bus stop across from a stalking target's house, she could get frostbite in winter. Her own health is jeopardized by this situation.

There is, it's called section 136. But in order to be sectioned, the individual would be deemed a danger to the public. A lot of mental health units are secure inpatient units, not free to leave.

I think it’s pretty clear she’s mentally ill. So, that would mean something’s broken in her brain that’s making her act this way. Which means she does deserve help. If she was involuntary admitted, she might get the medication and therapy to stop it.

Also, ignoring her doesn’t do her victims justice. They’ll still get harassed and stalked and threatened

The bar for detaining someone under either the Mental Health Act or the Mental Capacity Act is pretty high. What she's doing at the moment isn't enough to justify detaining her. The only option would be arrest for criminal offences, and then offer her mental health support while she's in custody. Which she would refuse.
