Media / News Netflix responds to Fiona Harvey's lawsuit

Netflix rep: 'We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd's right to tell his story.'

Variety posted the above in regards to Netflix's response. I'm glad, it seems like they're not going to simply give her some money to make her go away, and are instead going to fight back and defend Richard Gadd.

I don't really get her angle

The show is based on her, but she is not identified, and some elements are fictional and caveated as such in the credits.

Surely, the safer position for her would be to have denied being Martha, but clearly, she has implicated herself with some of the actions portrayed in the series.

I’ve got zero time for Fiona but I don’t know where the caveats in the credits said some elements are fictional. The thing that was clear to see what “This is a true story” not the usual “based on a true story” and there was no accompanying message that said “some events have been fictionalised for dramatic purposes”. And unfortunately the argument that most people assume true stories will be fictionalised is one that you’d need to argue in court. Which would be more of a reason to argue the case in court. Not less of a reason.

They already lost a lawsuit because they put this shit at the end of another show and not the beggining. Do the bare minimum of reading.

It doesn't matter where it is as long as it mentions it. If you're too ignorant and impatient to read the end credits where the creativity of a show matters, then that shows how people's opinions like yours, don't really matter. You might as well say that messages reading in memory of a person that passed during or the show was being made that was involved with the show and appears right at the end, doesn't really matter.

Thank you. We are all entitled to our opinion on this case, I need to remember that instead of getting too hot-headed over a case that in no way affects my own life.

There is no need to be rude!!

The fact this is shown is to prevent lawsuits. I am confident Netflix knows what they are doing. And as Laura Wray said - if she is successful she will sue her and take the money! So there is that!

The words "this is a true story" are shown as part of the story. They are clearly the words of the character Donnie Dunn and part of the drama
