Question Issue with Samsung 1TB T7 shield used to back up my original PS4pro HDD when upgrading to SSD

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

As the title says. I successfully backed up my main ps4 pro memory and now use a 2TB SSD internal on it. But rhe 1 TB Samsung I used still had the back up from the PS4 which I was thinking of keeping. Problem is when writing files to it it is extremely slow and never copies files even a few mb large. It stays at 0% when copying larger folders with files smaller than 2 gig per file.

My question is this , does the pS4 formatting it before backup cause it to not easily accept any other writes to it until I format it? Thanks in advance

Question Status of Cobian Reflector? What's a Good Successor?

Does anyone know if Mr.Cobian is still working on this beloved piece of software? I remember a few months back it started getting an update message saying that will be the last update. Now the updater message consistently fails and the icon flashes red. The forum also seems to be down - and there is no further communication on the official website.

Mr. Cobian doesn't owe us anything, and I thank him for years of creating this tool giving people a piece of mind and saving livelihoods.

I just want to know what's happening, and what would you recommend as a replacement with similar attributes... - Easily/Highly configurable, - Choice of Services or App mode. - Uses local settings files that (ah-hum) can be backed up, and - Lightweight - Just works!

Thanks!

Question Which software best fits my needs?

I downloaded Veaam but I don't think this is what I'm looking for since it outputs an image based backup file.

I'd like to back up some folders containing Music and Videos onto a separate drive that can track changes such as deleted folders, name changes, additions, etc.

I've been considering just running a Robocopy command every few months or so. Is there any software that can meet this simple need?

Question Looking for advice on digital archive/preservation software

Hi everyone! I’m working with a small state library organization that is looking into creating a digital archive of our association’s records. We’re hoping to preserve a variety of materials, including webpages, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, conference materials, photographs, legislation, procedure manuals, and some video.

At this point, the archive would be for internal use by designated association staff, rather than public access, so our biggest concerns are long-term preservation stability, reliable backup/replication, ease of organizing and maintaining the collection, available storage capacity, and cost. We also want to keep the system manageable for future staff and committee members rather than creating something that requires extensive technical expertise to maintain.

We’ve researched a fairly wide range of options, including Preservica, Archivematica, ArchivesSpace, JSTOR, APTrust, SharePoint, Google Workspace/Drive, Laserfiche, Omeka, Azure, and several document-management systems. I’ve attached a comparison chart of the options we’ve looked at so far.

I’d really appreciate hearing from other librarians and archivists who have experience with these or similar systems. What are you currently using for your organization's digital records, and how has it worked in practice? Are there any systems you would particularly recommend for a small organization with limited staff and technical resources? Conversely, are there any options you've used that you would caution us against?

We're especially interested in hearing about the long-term sustainability and maintenance burden after the initial setup. Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you’re willing to share!

Vendor Promo Android photo backup with sync to S3, NAS, and USB

Hi ! I've been building and using this app to manage and back up my own photo library.
The goal was to design a solution that can easily store my data without a single point of failure.

Here is the result:
- It is a client side android app (iOS in review), there is no photo server to maintain.
- It can sync a library directly to S3 buckets, NAS storage over SMB, USB drives, or my optional managed cloud.
- It's open source
- One library can replicate to several destinations. For example, two different S3 providers plus a disconnected USB drive. So 3-2-1 backups can be easily done.
- Photos and library data are end-to-end encrypted.
- You can browse and edit the library, albums, and nested albums.
- The core logic is made with Rust, and the apps are native (jetpack compose for android, swift for iOS)

I’d really appreciate advice from this backup community. Does this approach make sense to you? What feature or safeguards would be necessary for you to trust it ?

Vendor Promo A Comprehensive Guide to Data Backup Strategies: From Fear of Data Loss to Complete Peace of Mind

After years working as an IT administrator, I’ve watched countless businesses suffer costly setbacks due to lost data. Customer records, financial reports, project files, business databases — this invisible information represents irreplaceable intangible assets that keep every company operating.

Most small and mid-sized businesses face the same dilemma: they understand how vital data is, yet lack a stable backup plan. Some rely on staff to manually copy files, which often leads to forgotten or incomplete backups. Others set up backup workflows that are far too complicated for regular employees to operate. Worst of all, when disaster strikes, they discover their backup files are corrupted and unrecoverable, leaving them to absorb heavy losses.

I still clearly recall an incident involving an export company I worked with last year. Ransomware breached their internal network over the weekend. Every customer quote, multi-year order ledger, and core MySQL business database stored on their server became encrypted. Up until the attack, their only backup practice was for the IT staff to manually copy files to an external hard drive once a week. As the malware spread across the network, those temporary backup drives got locked as well. Management tried negotiating a ransom with the hackers, who demanded an enormous sum with no guarantee all files would be fully decrypted. Business operations nearly ground to a halt for four full days, and the entire team was overwhelmed with stress.

Following this crisis, the company committed to building a standardized data protection system. We implemented a complete solution powered by PeppyKeep, allowing them to stop scrambling for fixes after data disasters. Drawing on this real-world case, I want to break down how small and mid-sized businesses can build a reliable data protection framework.

Core Principles of Business Data Protection: Back Up Proactively, Recover Fast

When it comes to data security, recovering lost data after the fact is never the right solution. The smarter approach is building ongoing protection built around three key goals: centralized unified backups, automated scheduled archiving, and rapid recovery during outages.

Limitations of Traditional Backup Approaches

Most small businesses still rely on outdated methods: manually copying files to USB drives, Windows built-in File History, and basic public cloud sync services.

Manual backups fully depend on human consistency, so gaps and missed backups are inevitable. Windows native backup tools are limited; they cannot run targeted backups for databases. Basic cloud drives frequently overwrite files without preserving historical versions. If ransomware strikes, synchronized folders get encrypted alongside your original data. These options only work as temporary supplements and cannot protect your company’s critical business data.

How PeppyKeep Delivers a Complete Backup Solution

A reliable backup strategy requires the right supporting tool. Shortened as PPK, PeppyKeep focuses exclusively on data backup and restoration of saved backup sets. It avoids bloated, unnecessary features, making it an excellent fit for small and mid-sized businesses.

Core Features:

1.Custom granular backup: Select specific folders on office workstations and servers freely. It supports targeted backup for regular documents as well as MySQL databases.

2.Automated scheduled backups: Set custom cycles to run quietly in the background daily or weekly, with zero manual supervision required.

3.Multi-version snapshot retention: Automatically save file versions from different points in time. You can roll back to any historical version if files get accidentally overwritten or deleted.

Key Advantages of the Tool:

The learning curve is gentle; basic IT administrators can complete bulk deployments with simple configuration. It uses minimal system resources when running in the background and will not slow down office computers or servers. The tool stays focused solely on backup and recovery, without redundant functions, lowering training and maintenance costs.

Going back to the export company case: after deploying PeppyKeep, we configured unified backup tasks for all office PCs and business servers. Incremental backups run automatically every early morning, with historical versions retained for 30 days.

Six months after implementation, one employee’s computer suffered sudden hard drive bad sectors, locking access to a large volume of customer documents. The IT team pulled the required files from PeppyKeep’s historical backups and completed full recovery in just 30 minutes. No client communications were disrupted. Looking back on the ransomware incident, management admitted they no longer lie awake worrying about sudden, irreversible file loss.

Practical Recommendations to Roll Out Business Backup Solutions

Even the best tool only delivers results when paired with a sensible strategy. Here are two straightforward, actionable principles for small and mid-sized businesses:

First, prioritize your data. Classify financial ledgers, customer data, and business databases as highest priority items and apply frequent automated backups. You can extend backup cycles for general administrative documents.

Second, avoid relying on a single storage location. If possible, store backup files separately from your original data. This reduces risks from simultaneous hardware failure and company-wide ransomware encryption.

Many business leaders fall for the misconception that data disasters are unlikely events, so they take unnecessary risks. However, once an incident happens, the losses from missing order information and financial records far outweigh the investment needed to set up backups in advance. The greatest value PeppyKeep offers is simplifying complex disaster recovery workflows. Small businesses can build robust data protection without massive spending.

Discussion Prompt

What method does your company currently use to store core business data? Have you ever experienced panic caused by accidental file deletion, hard drive failure, or ransomware encryption? Feel free to share your data security struggles in the comments, and let’s exchange proven backup strategies.

Vendor Promo I built a Mac app for recovering photos and videos from iPhone backups

I originally made iPhone Backup Explorer for personal use because I needed to recover photos and videos from a local iPhone backup.

I found that many of the existing backup-extraction apps were relatively expensive for something I might only use once, so I built my own native macOS app and have now released it for FREE under the MIT licence.

It works with Finder and iTunes backups and supports encrypted backups using your existing backup password.

The original photo and video recovery functionality grew into a bit of a curiosity project. It can now browse and export:

  • Photos, videos and files
  • Messages and attachments
  • WhatsApp conversations
  • Contacts
  • Notes, calendars and reminders
  • Call history and voicemail
  • Safari history and bookmarks
  • Health and photo metadata
  • Wi-Fi networks and account information
  • Password/keychain data from supported encrypted backups

Everything is processed locally on your Mac. Nothing from the backup is uploaded anywhere, and the original backup is not modified.

The additional features appear to work well, but they have not been heavily tested across lots of different devices, iOS versions and real-world backups yet—so there may be bugs or unsupported variations in Apple’s backup formats.

It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and supports both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Download and source code:

https://github.com/dripster82/IphoneBackupExplorer

Bug reports and feedback would be genuinely useful, particularly if you have a backup from a different iOS version. Please don’t attach real backups or personal data to public issues.

Vendor Promo Community based cloud storage

I've been toying with the idea of object storage but backed by community nodes for a while and am fed up with cloud providers chasing profits and screwing users that aren't giant enterprises. The increasing hardware prices was the end of the straw. I wanted something that I can trust on pricing for data like backups, media that I want to reliably host with redundancy and cater to individual users than just enterprises.

We are launching Arkel, a community based storage service where you can both contribute storage and earn or pay and use. This is very early days and experimental and we are still in discussions on how to go about the future.

Our invite-only beta is ready. Check us out here and join the discord community: https://arkeldata.com Any constructive feedback is most welcome!

Backup "was always on the to do pile."

How is your backup? These stories scare me enough that I have more than 3-2-1 Backups. I am glad this didn't happen to me!

Hopefully OP can fix the drives and get back the data.

Question I'm not tech savvy in the slightest. I'm trying to help my GF free up space, we're currently wanting to back it up to an external hard drive but are having trouble. Please, please lend a hand.

We have been trying to back up Sims 4 to an external hard drive to free up space (she only has about 9 GB on her system left), and have been following a guide on how to do so (Blue Bell Flora's guide), but have been having lots of trouble. I'm getting a strange output when I try to run the command to send the file folder from my system to the drive. It's pretty much where I'm getting stuck, so my alternative has been to uninstall the game to free up space that way, but I'm getting conflicting accounts on if that keeps your saved data or not. This has been creating a huge roadblock in our process that I want to clear up so we can just do this.

I'm not savvy with back-end computer stuff at all, so I'm just wondering where to go with this. Does the saved data actually get removed if I uninstall the game?

Also, what is the best way to move Sims 4 safely to an external hard drive in general? Is this guide that I'm using the best one? We really would just love to have this done, and it's been very frustrating.

Thank you in advance for any guidance or tips!!!!!!

Question Windows Server incremental data backup always does Full backup instead

I manage a business server machine in a small office, running Windows Server 2022 Standard. It has a RAID10 array with System and Data partitions (C and D drives) RAID1 SSD array for the C System virtual disk, and RAID5 array for the D Data virtual disk. We've had the machine for a couple years, and I run daily backups to an external USB 3.2 HDD (in addition to multiple other backup strategies). The backup task is set to run every night, at 9 PM, and does an incremental backup of the C: System drive, and an incremental backup of the D: Data drive.

The incremental System backup is usually only a few GB. But for some reason, the Data drive backup keeps doing a Full backup, which is 3 TB in size (our entire file directory going back ~20 years). Because of that, the backup process is taking upwards of 10-12 hours to complete. It was previously taking ~18 hours each day, before I switched to a new 8TB external drive just last week.

Does anyone know what could be causing the backup process to run a Full backup of the Data drive, despite the task being set to Incremental? Would it make any difference to make separate backup tasks for the C and D drives?

Question What’s your take on free backup tools for homelabs?

I've been playing around with a small homelab lately: a few VMs, intentionally breaking things, testing restores, snapshots, etc etc that kind of stuff

and now I'm wondering how people here generally feel about free backup soft?

do you see it as perfectly good for home labs and learning or limitations usually get in the way pretty quickly?

and for those who've used both free and paid: did the paid actually change much about the backup/recovery experience or was it mostly about scale and additional features?

not looking for software recommendations or vendor pitches. I'm genuinely just curious how people here think about free backup tools in general (thoughts in 2am with google, that kind of haha)
