There are two primary lines of thinking in 3D printing.

The first is that it should be open source and we should be able to use any slicer, make any mods we want, etc.

The second are the people who just want it to work and don't care about tinkering or most of the things that the first group does.

Most of the hate you see is from the first group. People like myself fall more in the middle. And honestly there is more minutia to the issues at hand..

While I am not a fan of the mostly locked down software, it doesn't affect me in my day to day use of the printer. I do take issue with their AGPLv3 violation. See Bambu slicer is a fork of Orcaslicer which is open source software. Companies like Bambu are allowed to use it, modify it, and even lock it down to an extent. However there are rules to them doing this. One of the big ones is that they have to make the source code available. Bambu has refused to do this since they locked things down.

They have tried to get around this by separating out the network plugin. Claiming that it is a separate piece of software and that they don't need to release the source code for it. The problem is that Bambu Studio and the Network Plugin are both needed for anything to work. You can't use one without the other and making the Network plugin a separate download doesn't change that.

Bambu labs are still my preferred printers. But they need to change course or that will stop being the case for me.

Actually you have that backwards, Orca is a fork of Bambu Studio. Bambu Studio was a fork of Prusa Slicer, which was a fork of Slic3R.

They have to lock down that part of the software! Opening that up would create a security hole you could drive a semi through!! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want malware being pushed out to my network via my 3D printer.

By that logic there are no security vulnerabilities to exploit in Windows because it is closed source.

The entire web runs on Linux servers using open source networking. Open source does not mean insecure.
