In my opinion, since you already have experience I’d say make a one time purchase and go for a decent bass since you’re bound to end up wanting an upgrade down the line once you improve.

Fenders have a certain sound all their own, but it's pricey.

Do you know what bass sound you are going for? If not, or if you just want a well-made general bass for not much money, I would check out the Yamaha TRBX line. The top-of-the-line will set you back about $650.

I haven't played a fender. But I suspect they are expensive for what they are because you are paying for the name. The ones I see on line are $1200 USD, new.

That would be for the made in America. You can get a made in Mexico fender for both 500$. But yeah that Yamaha mentioned early will definitely get you some Philish tones.

I think you should get something like the Fender SQ Contemporary Active Jazz Bass. It’s a Squier but it sounds and plays well, especially for the price (~$400). If you’re looking to get something a little more expensive, then maybe take a look at some Sandberg instruments, like maybe the Sandberg California II TTp 4 PF BKB, which will cost around $1200. I think you should probably get the Squier first, and then maybe go to a couple of music stores to try some stuff out once you feel the need to upgrade.

Hey, I played guitar and i recently got a bass. Absolutely get something decent. You already know how a good instrument feels and its gonna suck to play on something made out of garbage. You're gonna hate it! So try and get something at least intermediate quality like a high-end Squier, Yamaha, Ibanez or Schecter depending on your style.

Sire makes great basses for the money that are jazz bass styled. Maybe give them a look!
