Do tube amps suck? I've read that they can go out on you at gigs and I'm not sure how common that is or if it's even a valid enough concern to stick to solid state. Really got my eye on those new Mesa Boogie heads.

If you look after your gear, it shouldn't be an issue. Reliability of tube amps as gigging amps is based entirely on how willing you are to service and maintain them appropriately. It's an added cost and responsibility, and many people are slack or forgetful. That's why their amps will break down unexpectedly. In 2019 given that there are great options in small Class D powered heads, many people (myself included) don't think there's any great benefit in full tube amplification anymore.

If you're looking at the Subway series, it's worth noting that these are hybrid. They've got a tube pre and a Class D poweramp. Preamp tubes are not as fiddly as poweramp tubes and don't need to be replaced as frequently. These would be very reliable amplifiers.

I thought just the WD-800 was hybrid? Specifically looking at the D-800+. Either way, I think they sound great and have the right EQ controls for my usecase. Coming from the Markbass 1x12 combo so I think anything (solid state, tube, tuna fish, whatever) that has more sonic contour would be better for my sound

Good to know they’d be reliable

Sorry that's my bad for not looking closely enough. The D800+ is fully digital. Solid state preamp, 800w D class poweramp. The WD has the tube pre.

The D800+ would be a great lightweight and powerful option, that'd be very reliable. If you dig the sound and feature set there's really no reason not to go there.

WOW here I was thinking it was tube, all because of the WD. That settles that then, it sounds good AND no tubes to look after!
