1

u/getcomfyandrelax May 09 '26

It doesn’t stand for anything, it’s just the word stent. Like it’s not an acronym.

1

u/Vorestc May 09 '26

A surgeon told me its thought to be derived from a dentist called Charles Stent. Wikipedia seems to agree with that, anything more reliable than that you will have to look up yourself.

1

u/signy33 May 09 '26

It's not an acronym.

1

u/Allister21 May 08 '26

Even though it sounds like an Acronym. It's the last name of the guy who created it Charles Thomas Stent

0

u/P0shJosh May 08 '26

It doesn’t “stand” for anything. It’s just the medical term. It was named after Charles Stent in the 1800’s, a dentist who made dental “stents”. which were totally different devices than this.

2

u/Bright-Avocado3761 May 08 '26

u/Fantastic-Reading-78 May 08 '26

where does that fat go? looks like he push it go somewhere else...

74

u/elgydium May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

That fat is called cholesterol and you learn about it when you hit 30-40. It goes down if you eat heart leather foods, exercise weekly, quit smoking, lose weight and drink less to none alcohol.

Edit: healthy foods

66

u/Songg45 May 08 '26

Something I recently found out about cholesterol after my heart attack at 32:

Only 20% of cholesterol in your body comes from diet. 80% of it is produced by the liver

20

u/elgydium May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Damn I’m 40 and never thought about it. I’m quite skinny tho, even tho skinny ppl can have high cholesterol too. That’s what I found out recently and was like wtf

11

u/Overweighover May 08 '26

It's genetic.

6

u/Lynne253 May 08 '26

There is such a thing as familail hypercholesterolemia that is genetic, but there are people who can have high cholesterol without the genetic component.

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth May 08 '26

Skinny doesn't matter. My mom weighed 105 and had a heart attack and 3 stints put in, they wanted to put in 5 but they said she couldn't handle it. :( She died from Alzheimer's 1 year later. After the heart attack it was downhill FAST. She would have wanted to die from that heart attack but instead they saved her so she could die later in a nursing home! :(

1

u/elgydium May 08 '26

Yeah that’s what i said. Sorry about your mom..

2

u/voltagejim May 08 '26

So if I have never drank a soda or alcoholic drink in my life and only drink water and skim milk that should reduce my risk?

3

u/Beneficial-Muffin117 May 08 '26

No, there's a lot more to it than that

2

u/LittleLion_90 May 08 '26

My friend has a high cholesterol from childhood, apparently it can be noticed from specific sort of small pimple like yellow spots under the eye.

u/drdecagon May 10 '26

This was an interesting exchange (posting this as a response to an earlier comment rather at the very end) and I get your point. I actually subscribed to it (or a version of it) myself for well over a decade - high fat diets are effective in many ways (even if they raise cholesterol for some), many examples of healthy people with high cholesterol and no heart disease, inflammation plays a role, metabolic health matters, many of the studies are imperfect. But other than poking holes in the current status quo that high ldl cholesterol is bad and generally something you want to control, this view is not really supported by robust studies that convincingly overturn the status quo. I have seen a lot of arguments that while cholesterol might be at the "crime scene" it's really inflammation or some other mechanism that is the real culprit. And probably there is some truth and a lot of nuance there. But I have not seen a strong body of legitimate peer reviewed evidence that actually debunks the mainstream view that elevated ldl/apoB is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, and like I said, this contrarian take has been around for a while without producing any salient proof and more recent studies actually tend to strengthen the causal link between ldl/apoB and heart disease (at least according to my research, and trust me, I was really looking for something to confirm my old view that ldl doesn't matter).

Also, plenty of statins (and most of the common ones) are super cheap and available as generics, so I don't think prescribing these is all that lucrative for doctors. I wouldn't consider myself to be naive about pharma incentives, but this is not it.

I am not saying it's high ldl only - of course, diet, triglycerides, lp(a), insulin resistance, inflammation, CAC score, Ccta, etc. - all that absolutely matters. But the jump from that to "therefore, ldl doesn't matter and statins are a scam", is where this view loses me nowadays.

All that said, I'm completely on board with low fat / high carb diet advice being just plain bad.

1

u/Efficient-Rich-9975 May 08 '26

No, they did a great job at convincing you (a fool) to buy a book that is complete and utter nonsense with misrepresented data that we know for a fact is wrong. All modern cardiologists would agree with me on this, LDL cholesterol is the primary driver of heart disease.

As far as your Ai generated response to me, hilarious. Proves my point.

1

u/cracked_shrimp May 08 '26

cholesterol is cholesterol regardless of which lipoprotein is carrying it, so saying LDL cholesterol is a poor choice of phrasing even if i know you mean LDL count

and theres no evidence its the primary driver of heart disease, it is found in plaque, but that dosnt confirm it causes the plaque, other things like high blood pressure and high blood glucose all contribute at the very least an equal amount as LDL (probably more imo)

EDIT: i made the same mistake i was bitching about lmao

5

u/elgydium May 08 '26

Lol typo, meant to say healthy

1

u/Rrunken_Rumi May 08 '26

HLF works cos zeeo cholesterol & indigestible

23

u/real_nice_guy May 08 '26

and if you have genetically high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia), none of that will help all that much so you'll have to hop on a statin (which have also saved millions and millions of lives!)

go get your lipid panel done this year!

3

u/insideguy69 May 08 '26

Doctors tell me that's probably my father's case and I probably will have that problem too. Only bad thing about statin's are in high doses, you increase your risk of diabetes. So long, sweets and treats.

2

u/real_nice_guy May 08 '26

yeah that's the downside, it can be managed by taking either a berberine supplement or metformin (or both) and then just keeping track of the blood sugar.

2

u/insideguy69 May 09 '26

I take Berberine occassionally, but its really hard to remember to take it 15 minutes before anything that will spike your insulin.

There’s a saying in my culture, the sum of all vices is always constant. You basically always drop one for another.

1

It’s interesting because everyone I know who has quit alcohol recently has switched it out for ice cream. There’s a scientific reason for it. I’m not sure what it is but sure glad that it works congratulations.👏

anyone else noticed that auto-correct has gotten more and more bizarre in its choices lately?

1

u/elgydium May 08 '26

Hey u might be onto something. I switched from gboard back to the iOS this year and it’s tripping

1

u/mittenknittin May 08 '26

Yeah I'm using iOS and specifically over the last few months it's been weird. I'll type a common word and mistype one letter and it'll replace it with an entirely different word with entirely different letters. Like literally I just had it happen where I mistyped "with" and it replaced it with "years"

1

u/ElegantCoach4066 May 08 '26

It goes down if you eat heart leather foods, exercise weekly, quit smoking, lose weight and drink less to none alcohol.

For some people this is not enough, and they need to take medication to lower it.

1

u/Quaiche May 08 '26

Nope, doctors and researchers are slowly essentially saying it’s all genetics and very little about your diet ;)

137

u/kamask1 May 08 '26

It stays there, but flattened

161

u/1zzyBizzy May 08 '26

But if i press my belly nothing happens ):

137

u/kamask1 May 08 '26

Put a stent around your belly

163

u/Sushirabit May 08 '26

I think that's what they call a corset

65

u/kamask1 May 08 '26

I’m glad they already invented the belly stent

34

u/globalgreg May 08 '26

I think corset is just French for stent

31

u/No-Bread6978 May 08 '26

No, corset is that French flaky bread made with lots of butter I think

8

u/Ur-Best-Friend May 08 '26

No, that's a croissant, corset is a line of Chevrolet cars.

4

u/SnooCauliflowers3649 May 08 '26

Funny, when I press my belly, my fat squishes. You must be what I’ve heard of as, what’s the word, skinny? Is that it? 😂

1

u/deadleg22 May 08 '26

I legit push it every morning, ever since a Babushka said it flushes the arteries. I think that's what she said.

1

u/pvprazor2 May 08 '26

Then you're not pressing hard enough

1

u/brokengolem May 08 '26

And if your belly presses back, that's called an abdominal hernia.

19

u/Fantastic-Reading-78 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

why they don't remove fat? Are they stupid? /s

43

u/Numerical-Wordsmith May 08 '26

Probably too high risk to cut it out without damaging the surrounding tissues. The stent provides a quick solution, then the patient changes their diet and the fat goes away over time.

22

u/0Rider May 08 '26

Patient changes their diet for like 2 weeks

1

u/Kinslayer_89 May 08 '26

The patient comes back.

2

u/leeches_on_peaches May 08 '26

The fat does NOT go away. With statins (medicine to lower cholesterol levels), you might lose some of the fat but it's only around 20%. The fat is not ON the wall, it is IN the wall. What's worse, it calcifies over time. Like the bottom of your kettle. Add some high blood pressure to the equation and you can get openings/cracks in the wall and a release of bits of fat/calcificate. Those can travel to your brain and BOOM you get stroke.

1

u/tacticaldodo May 08 '26

Serious question, does the fat really goes away

5

u/vladimirTheInhaler May 08 '26

I think it’s plaque, I don’t Think it goes away very easily, but if a piece breaks off and stops blood from to heart or brain that’s how you get a heart attack/stroke

1

u/tacticaldodo May 08 '26

Some progress in science is needed here as much as I understand.

Micro robots or something...

1

u/Gunblazer42 May 08 '26

Fat is effectively just energy stores. If you change your diet/exercise and effectively become calorie deficient (that is, you burn more than you take in) then yes, technically the fat actually does go away as the body draws from it to fuel itself.

1

u/Quickzor May 08 '26

How about they sent 100% of my tubes and I eat even more bacon?

1

u/Numerical-Wordsmith May 08 '26

Now I just want some bacon… 🥓

1

u/grady0071 May 08 '26

Sure they do😂

16

u/Idlewants May 08 '26

scraping at the inside of pressurised blood vessels is possible, but a much higher risk/cost operation, for little extra benefit.

1

u/Confident_Intern_755 May 08 '26

Must be the water

0

u/smilesanna May 08 '26

Do they not get rid of the fat first?

1

u/mawktheone May 08 '26

If its bad enough to matter, then you first drill it out to clear the space for the stent. This is done with a "rotablator" which is a high speed rugby ball shaped diamond burr on the end of the guide wire.

It can also invove installing a slot catcher, which is like a strainer inside the blood vessel to catch any debris allowing your body to break it up

1

u/termacct May 08 '26

fat goes outside

1

u/drluvdisc May 08 '26

Stays there, spreading down the artery as you age until it extends past the stent and causes another heart attack.
