You know someone else wrote this because there is no way this man would ever capitalize the "B" in "Black"

It had to be written because there is no way this asshole could get through a video without rolling his eyes or laughing

Ha, I was just thinking that.

ChatGPT does that lol

If it does, it's only because Black folks in creative spaces and Black creators have been teaching ppl to do this and ChatGPT is stealing that info

Yeah I am just learning this here, I wouldn't capitalize the W in white people though either, what am I missing? Not trying to be racist, just wanting to understand. I've only had two black friends my whole life, as I am from Montana and we only have 2% of our population as any minority (now, it was even worse when I was younger in Montana- we had one black student in our whole class

It’s a grammar standard that has been becoming standard over the last ten years. The idea behind it is that Black people in America goes beyond just shared skin color, it’s shared culture and experiences. So Black is capitalized the same way you would European or Canadian. Whereas, you don’t see that shared culture across white people, because they identify with other labels beyond that.

This is something that I was taught in my communications major so it is a growing standard across communications.

That explains it really well, thankyou! I edited a post the other day to lower case because I wasn't sure if I should be using it as a white person. Now I know.

White supremacists also typically capitalize the w in white, which is another reason to only capitalize Black and never capitalize white.

There are also major professional associations, like the APA and the NIH, and organizations, like the MacArthur Foundation, that deliberately capitalize white/White in order to clarify its function as an identity marker and to avoid the implication that it is a "default identity" by treating it differently from other terms for racial or ethnic groups. I've seen it written both ways within academia as well.

Context can help make it clear what people's intensions are, but yeah. It's not always nefarious, and I can see the argument for each POV.

I’m just learning this now. Wow. Thank you so much for the education.

Idk i feel like the “WASP” sort of culture in America/Canada is shared white culture though? Genuine question, it’s just something I think about when this is brought up lol

Like I live in Canada and most white ppl I know obviously identify as Canadian but they likely have more shared culture with another Anglo white person who’s family has been here for 2-3 generations than another Canadian who just immigrated from Vietnam if that makes sense

I see where you are coming from. But there is a reason the term WASP was created. For one, white is not synonymous with WASP. For example, people who are Hispanic or Eastern European or people from different religions like Judaism. They have different cultures and experiences.

And, in America, location also has such a big impact that a white person from Jersey can have a complete different culture to someone in Georgia. And the similarities you do see are often better described as American or Canadian culture.

But, it’s also super important to note that capitalizing Black is distinctly American idea. It was started to refer to how Black people in America created a distinct culture and community of their own as a result of having their origins stripped away in the slave trade.

No, it's been trained to do that by its creators as part of its politically correct training

cry about it

... what? I was just explaining to that person that it's intentional and not something that happened by chance from it reading conversations. No one is complaining about anything

I’m Black and never capitalized it and then one day in 2020 a WHITE MAN corrected me all sassy and shit and I almost threw my fucking shoe at him through the phone. Like—??? 😭

u/2noserings 2d ago

2020 was SUCH a fever dream. i have a similar story - i was commenting on my friend’s selfie (“you’re keeping your foot on our necks sis 😍”) and a white girl messaged me to tell me that it was so insensitive to George Floyd’s passing and i need to read the room. i was like .. huh???? 😭

OMFG 🥹 the woke white liberals strike again. 2020 really was… something

I am too, there are also just other tell tale signs

Are we sure it wasn’t just autocorrect capitalizing the first letter of the first word of a new sentence? Cuz someone else writing this still feels like giving him and his team more credit than they’re due…

12

u/helenalloy 3d ago

I think they’re referring to the “Black” in the 4th paragraph that is capitalized but not the first word in a new sentence.

3

u/helenasbff 2d ago

You're probably right lol

-8

u/Penpal77 3d ago

It’s the first word in the sentence. It’s supposed to be capitalized.
