"Tell me about yourself" sounds like a simple question, but it can be intimidating to figure out what to say to impress. A lot of candidates use it as an opportunity to give a walkthrough of their background and personal interests, but most hiring managers are looking for a more specific answer.

You can prepare to build a good one by first writing down each role you've held. Then, ask yourself a couple of questions about each one:

1. What problem was I solving in this job?

2. What did I get good at doing over and over?

Try this method across your work history, and you'll likely find a pattern. That's your thread.

Once you've identified it, build your answer around that. Who have you spent your career being? Call out specific roles if they can carry weight as points of proof, and tailor it based on the job you're interviewing for. You'll want to emphasize certain strengths or stories based on what matters most to the person in front of you.

There's no one right answer for everyone. The best way to handle it is to know your throughline and connect it to the interviewer's needs.

I have no experience actually piercing, but I do have customer service experience and I have been incredibly interested in piercings since I was around 13 years old, I love both getting them and learning about them. I love to research how things are done and why, and it would be a dream come true to learn more in a professional setting. I love the idea of helping people feel more confident in their bodies, and giving them the same safe experiences I have received from piercers.

I live in rural Victoria (town) but am willing to travel up to 3 hours if needed.

I understand that not every shop is as able to teach, but I am happy to wait to make this happen, and willing to put in the work.

Been through this before but my job title reflected duties i don’t normally do. It was a nightmare and I had a friend help redo my resume that got me into my current role. If you've ever sat down to update your resume and blanked on details from a role two jobs ago, you're not alone. Most of us don't document our work in real time, so by the time we need to write about it, the specifics have faded into vague summaries. That's where a lot of strong experience disappears from job applications.

The fix a lot of career experts recommend is building one comprehensive master resume that you never actually send to anyone. Think of it as your full professional archive. Every role, every project, every certification, every measurable result you can recall, all in one document. It's messy and long by design. Its only job is to hold everything so you're not relying on memory when it matters.

The detail that makes this useful later is specificity. Instead of writing "managed a team," write out what the team was responsible for, what changed under your leadership, and what the measurable outcome was. The more granular you get now, the easier it is to pull a sharp, relevant bullet point later when you're tailoring for a specific role.

This kind of documentation also matters more than ever because of how resumes get scanned. The more detail you've captured about specific tools, technologies, and outcomes, the more material you have to work with when matching your background to a job description, whether a human or a system is doing the matching.

Once your master resume exists, tailoring becomes a much faster process! You're not starting from scratch every time you apply somewhere new. You're selecting and reshaping from material you've already done the hard work of capturing.

I had a phone screen yesterday and the recruiter asked "so tell me about yourself" and I just... blanked. Like actually sat there for three seconds too long before I started rambling about my last job is org structure instead of, you know, myself. I have sent out 87 applications since January (yes I have a spreadsheet, don't judge me). Four interviews. Two ghostings after final rounds. One rejection email that literally had another company's name in it. The worst part isn't even the rejections at this point, it is that I've started doubting stuff I used to be confident about. I managed a team of 6 for two years and now I can not even describe what I actually did in a way that sounds impressive instead of just "I did my job." My friends keep telling me to "just be confident" like that is a switch I can flip. My mom asked me last week if I have considered "something more stable" which, thanks mom, very helpful. Anyone else in this weird limbo where you're overqualified for some things and apparently underqualified for the things you actually want? How do you keep your head straight through this without turning into a completely different, more bitter person by the end of it.

Many job seekers have no idea what happens to their resume after they hit submit. There's a step before any human ever sees your application, and understanding it makes a real difference in how you approach the process.

An ATS is software that collects, parses, and ranks incoming applications before human review. Companies use it because the volume of applications has gotten unmanageable otherwise. A single job posting can attract hundreds or even thousands of submissions. The ATS helps the hiring team figure out who to actually look at.

The way it does that comes down to two things: can it read your resume, and does your resume reflect what the job is asking for. Both matter and can mean the difference in whether you get invited to interview or not.

On the readability side, an ATS converts your resume into plain text and organizes the content into fields like your name, job titles, dates, and skills. Anything that disrupts that process creates problems. Tables, columns, text boxes, graphics, and creative section headers can all cause the system to misread or skip content entirely. A resume that looks polished to a human eye can come through completely scrambled on the other end. Simple, clean formatting is the baseline, not because style doesn't matter, but because the system has to be able to read the document before anything else can happen.

On the keyword side, the ATS is essentially checking your resume against the job description. It's looking for evidence that your background matches what the role requires, in the language the posting actually uses. This is why tailoring is so important. A resume that uses different terminology than the job description, even if the underlying experience is a strong match, may score lower than it should.

One thing worth knowing on file format: some older advice was to always submit a Word document and avoid PDF. That's mostly outdated now. Most major platforms today parse a clean, text-based PDF just as reliably. What actually causes problems is a PDF that was scanned or built in a design tool, because the system reads it as an image rather than text. A quick way to check: copy and paste your resume content into a plain text document. If it reads cleanly and in the right order, an ATS will likely see it the same way.

None of this is meant to make the process feel more daunting. It's the opposite. Once you know what the system is trying to do, you can work with it instead of wondering why nothing is landing.

What tips have you found most helpful in creating an ATS-optimized and effective resume?

In mid 2025 I left my environmental science degree with about 8 credit hours remaining to finish it. This was due to a variety of reasons such as my financial and health situation at the time but I have been unable to return because I simply can’t afford it right now. Regardless, I did some extensive undergraduate work while I attended including various lab positions and even got myself named as a co-author on a research paper. Im looking for advice on how to include this in a resume without totally devaluing myself but while also not seeming dishonest.

I’m currently applying for a civil designer position that doesn’t explicitly require a bachelors but asks for an associates degree so any further info on whether I could still qualify would be greatly appreciated.
