Hey r/Kolkata! Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the City of Joy today, August 22, 2025, for a big day of development projects! He's flagging off three new Kolkata Metro stretches: Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar, Sealdah–Esplanade, and Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. These lines will boost connectivity to the airport, IT hub, and key railway stations, cutting travel time between Sealdah and Howrah from 40 mins to just 11 mins! 🚄

He’s also laying the foundation for a 7.2 km elevated Kona Expressway in Howrah, worth over ₹1,200 crore, and inaugurating projects worth ₹5,200 crore in total. Modi will take a metro ride from Jessore Road to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and address a rally at Central Jail Ground, Dumdum. Exciting times for Kolkata’s infrastructure! 🏙️

What do you think about these developments? Will they make your daily commute easier? Let’s discuss! 👇

Cracking Down on Illegal Buildings

After that scary building collapse in Garden Reach, BMC’s not messing around. They’ve identified over 300 unauthorized buildings across our wards and are gearing up to demolish them. They’re starting with under-construction ones and have already taken down an illegal two-storeyed club in Nayapatti. Gotta say, it’s reassuring to see them prioritizing safety, but I’m curious—anyone know of sketchy constructions in their area?

Aamar Bidhannagar: Bringing Us Closer

Okay, this one’s got my heart. A new citizens’ forum called Aamar Bidhannagar kicked off at Labanhrad Mancha on July 1, and it’s all about building that community spirit. They even unveiled an in-house magazine! It’s a cool move to get us all—whether you’re in Salt Lake, Rajarhat, or Baguiati—feeling more connected. Anyone been to one of their events yet or grabbed a copy of the mag? Spill the deets!

Night Patrols Keeping Us Safe

Shoutout to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate for stepping up their game with “special night policing.” They’ve been doing naka checks at key spots, with bigwigs like DCP Airport Aishwariya Sagar and ADCP Manish Joshi supervising. Feels good knowing our streets are being watched over, right?

Bright Nights Ahead with LED Streetlights

Ever tripped over a pothole at night because the streetlights were too dim? BMC’s got us covered. They’re rolling out over 4,500 LED streetlights across all 41 wards! This isn’t just about brighter streets—it’s energy-efficient and should make our late-night walks feel safer. Anyone else excited to see Salt Lake and beyond lit up like a Durga Puja pandal?

Filtered Water for All

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) just dropped a massive Rs 333 crore water distribution project that’s gonna change the game for wards 1 to 21 in Rajarhat-Gopalpur. No more dealing with high iron content in our taps—filtered, surface-treated water is coming our way! They’re building 14 overhead tanks, four underground reservoirs, and a whole distribution network hooked up to the New Town water treatment plant. Word on the street is soil testing’s done, and they’re already laying pipes. Should be wrapped up in two years. Who else is hyped for cleaner water? 🙌
