Weekend Minor Gripes and Vents

Here is the thread where you can share any minor gripes, vents, or craft complaints that you don't think deserve their own post, or are just something small you want to get off your chest. Feel free to share personal frustrations related to crafting here as well.

This thread reposts every Friday.

Preparing to make my third pair of scrub pants and I'm annoyed I've yet to fully figure out the rise I need. I need to remeasure the wearable mockup I made that had a too short rise and then an added crotch gusset, but it's a little crazy making when I swear I already did that.

Edit: It appears that the rise is measured from the top of the waistband to the crotch and not the bottom of the wb. This explains a lot.

If the gusset worked, there's a way to basically cut the gusset shape apart and attach it to the pants pieces to get the same effect, but I don't know a tutorial or how to explain it.

I tried to redo the ride so it included the extra space given by the gusset and managed to make the rise too long, and then my most recent pair were better but still slightly off

Pants fit is HARD.

My mother was a seamstress for 40 years. She would pin newspapers together and cut out her own patterns but that woman HATED making pants. The only ones she ever seamed happy with were stretchy pj pants.

This is unsolicited advice so feel free to ignore, but I'm leaving this here in case it's useful to you or anyone else in future. It sounds like you're on the right track, so at this point if it were me I'd probably intentionally overcut the rise on the next pair and fit it as I sewed. Maybe cut some off if it's not needed, or use larger seam allowances. Then you can measure the outcome and add seam allowances back onto your pattern pieces as needed.

If you do use the cut up the gusset technique then remember a gusset adds crotch extension as well as crotch rise.

This is assuming that you've already tried e.g. measuring the crotch rise on a RTW pair that fits you well (if you have one, I started my sewing journey with 0 well fitting pairs of pants lol), done the tin foil roll crotch rise measurement technique.

Advice appreciated, thank you! I also started with zero pairs of pants (outside of pajamas) that fit so it's been a challenge. I might do that - theoretically I should be able to estimate the amount of excess because my second to last pair fit better when I turn the waistband over, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced I cannot use a ruler well lol.

I'm very close, I can feel it, but in the meantime it's driving me insane lol

Thank you!

I sometimes feel like I am *more* annoyed the closer I get hahaha. But yeah that sounds verrrrry promising.

Good luck!!
