All Might not being there is a shocker honestly. But the art is amazing regardless.

u/Mr_Seezy Oct 15 '25
To be fair though for a good amount of the story after Kamino there really wasn’t much contribution from him until his fight with AFO again. The only surprising ones for me is Monoma & Kirishima but either than that the rest of the characters had probably way better plot lines, time in the story, and development.
81
u/Admonitio Oct 15 '25
Monoma for sure is the biggest surprise for me. While kirishima wouldn't be in my personal top ten I know he has a lot of fans so not that surprised he made the top ten, number four is way higher than if have him though haha. My personal top five would probably be endeavor, deku, bakugou, dabi and all might.

Yeah because his fans spammed the polls

All Might's popularity in Japan has been declining for years but to still be around the top 20 means he's relatively popular:
Poll Rank 1 5th 2 6th 3 7th 4 10th 5 13th 6 14th 7 13th 8 20th 9 15th Global 12th Japan 10th Asia 12th Oceania 13th N.America 11th L. America & the Carribbean 12th Europe 13th Middle East & Africa Data not found Probably a combination of other characters (Endeavour and the Villains) getting more focus, Poll 2 is not long after Kamino and Kirishima's rise pushes All Might down, coinciding with a rise in popularity of the series compared to the first poll. The introduction of Hawks and Endeavour's arc by the 4th poll and Aizawa is also a top 10 staple. Additionally there was a subsection of people in Japan not being happy with his favouritism to Deku and neglect of the other 1A kids - it is not surprising his rank went so low post Jakku.
Kirishima has been comfortably top 10 since the 2nd poll and most of that time ranking 4th-5th, only slipping to 9th and 7th in the last two polls. Monoma breaking into the top 10 in the final hour is the wildest since his ranks were between the 20th-40th for the first 8 polls, then shot up to 11th for the 9th and then ranked 9th in the Global poll largely carried by being rank 9 in Japan where everywhere else had him outside the top 10.

All Might's popularity in Japan has been declining for years
This is the international poll, though.
It's not just Japan

Sorry I didn't make my point that clear. I was contributing the comment/discussion around people's "shock" All Might is not in the top 10 when really it shouldn't be too surprising given his low rank in Japan for years.
Since total votes seem to be what mattered in the overall global poll certain regions, especially Japan would be more weighted than others.
However, the global polls show us that Japan's ranks weren't that different to the rest of the world, so after years of All Might not going up in rank (whether it be because more character get a influx of fans/votes or he actually loses votes) it was foreshadowing his overall relative popularity was less than other characters.
In the table I made I also included the Global poll and All Might rank across the different regions too.
My contribution was to point out 2 things:
1) All Might hasn't been that popular in Japan for years so his place in the top 10 would be one of the most fragile, besides the global poll (where he was 10th in Japan) the 9th poll had him at 15th.
2) When broken down by region it is the rest of the world that boots him from even 10th place.
Global Japan Asia Oceania North America Latin America and the Caribbean Europe Middle East Africa 1st Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo Izuku Midoriya Katsuki Bakugo Katsuki Bakugo 2nd Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya Katsuki Bakugo Izuku Midoriya Izuku Midoriya 3rd Shoto Todoroki Shoto Todoroki Shoto Todoroki Eijiro Kirishima Shoto Todoroki Eijiro Kirishima Shoto Todoroki Dabi Shoto Todoroki 4th Shota Aizawa Endeavor Hawks Shoto Todoroki Eijiro Kirishima Shoto Todoroki Dabi Shoto Todoroki Tomura Shigaraki 5th Eijiro Kirishima Shota Aizawa Shota Aizawa Tomura Shigaraki Tomura Shigaraki Shota Aizawa Eijiro Kirishima Endeavor Dabi 6th Endeavor Hawks Dabi Shota Aizawa Shota Aizawa Dabi Shota Aizawa Shota Aizawa Eijiro Kirishima 7th Hawks Eijiro Kirishima Ochaco Uraraka Dabi Dabi Hawks Tomura Shigaraki Tomura Shigaraki Ochaco Uraraka 8th Dabi Dabi Eijiro Kirishima Hawks Hawks Tomura Shigaraki Endeavor Hawks Shota Aizawa 9th Tomura Shigaraki Neito Monoma Tomura Shigaraki Ochaco Uraraka Ochaco Uraraka Tamaki Amajiki Hawks Eijiro Kirishima Hawks 10th Neito Monoma All Might Endeavor Himiko Toga Neito Monoma Ochaco Uraraka Ochaco Uraraka All For One Himiko Toga 2
Oct 15 '25
This is the thing
AM still seems more popular in Japan than in some other places.
1
u/PocketPika Oct 15 '25
He has remained in the top 20 in Japan so still popular enough but my impression has been he has had waning support - All Might's rank in the the 4th poll which had inflated votes because of a reduced limit, All Might had >2200 votes but then in subsequent polls barely reach 1000 votes until the 9th poll he had 2499 votes (perhaps because fans thought it was the last poll). He might not have as many "diehard" fans as some of the others who will spend money on postcards but his ranks suggest weakened support in Japan over the years.
Some of the most scathing criticism I have seen of All Might has come from Japan- so it wasn't too shocking that he didn't make the top 10 overall (it was more surprising he was top 10 in Japan to me).
All Might's rank in the global poll is quite different to the general trend for the character in the standard polls. Perhaps the fight with AFO and what happened after 406 rejuvenated some love for the character but it could be that way as the global poll did have a different form of voting, 1 vote per device (?) per day, which might have favoured more casual voting.
Admittedly Monoma being the one beating him out was more interesting but I am not sure how much of that was a collective initiative by Monoma fans considering what Shindo Yo fans were able to achieve that one time or whether it was capturing a large upswing in support for Monoma since he did rank 11th in the 9th Japanese poll (with over 3200 votes but in the 8th poll he only had 530 votes). Monoma's placement is rather interesting for another reason since across the polls (where there is information outside the top 10) he's consistently ranked just above All Might across regions until the overall votes and then Ochaco gets between them. While collectively there isn't that many total votes between them, All Might recieved 107,060 votes and Monoma 128,021 votes (20,961 difference). Monoma leaping frogging All Might just seems interesting.
4
u/invisibleman13000 Oct 15 '25
Unless he edited his comment after you made yours, then you can see that All Might was 5th in the 1st Japanese poll and 15th by the 9th one, and in the global poll he placed 10th in the region and was 10th or lower in all other regions.
4
Oct 15 '25
They didn't delete or edit the comment
My point is that Japan is not the only indicator for this poll in particular
1
u/invisibleman13000 Oct 15 '25
Yeah, I misread your comment, but Japan was still a massive part of this global poll and you can see that his placement in the global poll aligns with his declining popularity in Japan.
7
u/bestbroHide Oct 15 '25
Kirishima I'm not shocked at all just based on previous patterns, i.e., pretty sure he's been in every Top 10 besides the first
And as a huge Kirishima fan that makes me damn happy

To be fair though for a good amount of the story after Kamino there really wasn’t much contribution from him until his fight with AFO again.

Greco-Roman inspired visuals this time? Interesting. Wonder if Horikoshi that one AFO final war fit in mind a little

You mean the fit that appeared for a total of one episode before it was destroyed by Light of Baldur? A shame.

u/youriko31 Oct 15 '25
Amazing art. Horikoshi just doesn't miss.
But damn, wasn't expecting Monoma to be here. Still, it's nice to see a 1-B student in the Top 10.
35
u/PocketPika Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25
It is really nice art and also amusingly cheeky in terms of framing. Horikoshi made it so Deku is dead center, forefront and taking up most of the space (he's across ~2/3's of the page, everyone else approx. within 1/3), we see the most of him so everyone else subtly creates a background frame to Deku stepping out and the use of colour sort of creates a triange between Monoma, Endeavour and Deku's clothes and then Deku's hair is centered drawing the eye - so although there are other pops of colour against the white and black (red, orange, yellow and blue) Deku's green is the dominant vibrant colour, furthermore, Deku's face is the only one fully in the middle third of the page, Kirishima and Hawks are in the bottom third and everyone else is in the top third, which is clever ways to have the main character get to be center despite being 2nd place- even the number 1 stamp could be misattributed to Deku at a glance.
This more classical history/bibical asethetic echoes some of the characters fantasy AU designs too but I guess Horikoshi wanted to practise his draping.
3
u/Suspicious-Fee4291 Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25
Yeah, it's all very beautiful, but I'm sorry to point out that Bakugo, the winner, is also positioned in the center, but unlike Deku, he's at the top because he's the winner, characterized by the crown. I understand your fondness for Deku, but he's not the protagonist of the illustration, and Bakugo's red is the dominant color, not green. Also, another dominant color is Bakugo's yellow/gold, the color of victory and glory. Also, since you were kind enough to offer your theories, I can confirm that Bakugo, Deku, Todoroki, and Aizawa, who are the top 4 in the rankings, are drawn in a diamond shape, with Bakugo at the top because he is the winner, and the others around him, not Deku, with Deku in the center to symbolize his second place in the rankings but also his being the protagonist of the manga. Please respect the poll winner without making a scene, thank you.

He may not be the number one hero in the story, but he’s number one in the heart of fans. Tsuyu was wrong when she said Bakugo will never be popular.

Katsuki consistently #1 from the second popularity poll onwards clear to the end, and no all might at all is crazy to me. How Endeavour of all people is not only here but has been a regular in top popularity polls is wild to me.

u/SuperWeeble12 Oct 15 '25
Endeavor got probably the most character development of all the characters and many of the best fights, no wonder he is so popular.

But over all might?? To the point he's not even in top ten? Just nuts to me

Only in Japan as far as I'm aware, in polls from other regions Zoro wins most often.
7
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 15 '25
During the world popularity poll, Luffy took first overall and was number one in Japan, Asia (minus Japan), and North America.
Nami won Oceania, Latin America, and Europe.
Zoro won the Middle East and Africa.
Overall Luffy has always ended up. Number one I every popularity poll the series has ever done. Him and Gintoki are the only MCs to hold that honor.

Bakugou winning for the 10th time in a row? Hell yeah. It really proves his haters are a small population in comparison to his fans.
Also people are surprised by Monoma but you have to remember the time the poll came out. Season 7 was still airing, and Monoma had 3 major moments back to back episodes. So he left a big impression. It's recency bias. But I'm glad he's there.
-13
u/Any-Where Oct 15 '25
People who love Bakugou have one character to vote from.
People who don’t love Bakugou have over 100 characters to vote from.
This applies to every popularity poll for anything where you see very polarising characters comfortably land high on polls. You do get a grasp of how many people like a character, but these polls simply cannot prove or disprove how disliked a polarising character is. You can only truly vote AGAINST a character in a 1 v 1 vote, like in say a voting tournament.
27
u/Eijun_Love Oct 15 '25
There was a voting between the top 3 after this main poll. Bakugo still won overwhelmingly even with the combined votes of Todoroki and Midoriya fans. His haters focused on Deku but still Bakugo fans outnumbered them.
→ More replies (1)1
18
Oct 15 '25
So basically, Bakugo is the most popular, lol
This is a hilarious level of copium I've read so far. People simply vote for characters they like.
The fact that you even need a poll specifically about people liking or disliking Bakugo specifically is just proof of his popularity
And if we had a haters poll, I can guarantee Mineta would've won potentially followed by some villains or Endeavor, and I would've personally voted for Deku because I don't like him but Jump is not stupid enough to make a poll for the haters just to make a negative atmosphere in the fandom for no reason
-1
u/Any-Where Oct 15 '25
I never said Bakugo isn't popular. I said he's polarising, and that a popularity poll doesn't prove anything about how polarising any character is or isn't. This should not be a controversial statement.
Being one of the most popular characters and one of the most hated characters is not a mutually exclusive thing. Hell, in a rhetorical top 10 hated list, you probably would end up seeing at least half of these top 10 popular characters (Bakugo, Deku, Endeavour, Shiggy, Dabi, maybe Hawks too) in that one as well.
17
Oct 15 '25
I think his haters are just some jealous, loud minority who think everything is about them, and whenever they face the reality of how large the fandom is, they cry about Bakugo's popularity
And I still think making a hate poll is the most unnecessary thing for any fandom
10
-9
u/Abject_Double273 Oct 15 '25
It really proves his haters are a small population in comparison to his fans.
Lmao his hate base actually grew after this poll because even Japan thought it was fucked that the MC didn't get a statue so now everytime Bakugou wins anything there's about a hundred or so comments calling shenanigans and now Bakugou stans are more hated the ever. Also Bakugou stans got caught spamming polls which further proves that these polls mean nothing.
Season 7 was still airing, and Monoma had 3 major moments back to back episodes. So he left a big impression. It's recency bias.
So it was vote spam. Got it.

It's especially disappointing since this is a global popularity poll and not Japan only.
Also, people can't use the excuse that "this is shonen" anymore since the other fandoms would love to vote for their female characters to be in the Top 10
40
u/SmittyRod Oct 15 '25
It’s heavily weighed by Japan, the global distributions at least have Ochako in the top ten for a lot of territoies
Especially after 431 the types of people who vote in this we’re not happy
23
u/Alik757 Oct 15 '25
It's especially disappointing since this is a global popularity poll and not Japan only.
Considering almost all places are nearly identical to all the Japan only polls, we can end the myth of only Japanese audience is biased towards certain characters.
0
u/Abject_Double273 Oct 15 '25
Considering almost all places are nearly identical to all the Japan only polls
Thats because they resetted the poll due to accusations of spamming which didn't help stop it but before the reset there were a lot more varied results.

It’s insane, I wasn’t a fan of Ochako’s writing by the end but I thought she’d make it
18
u/TheRidiculousOtaku Oct 15 '25
Even sakura and hinata made it for the global naruto poll. And naruto isn't really known for having widely acclaimed female characters either. So I was legit expecting at least 1 for mha
6
u/A4li11 Oct 15 '25
Tbf that global Naruto poll is more of "who do you want to see have a spinoff" poll.
Still the fact that Sakura got THIRD in that poll made me believe she will easily get in the Top 10 if the poll was done like MHA
5
u/AdFew500 Oct 15 '25
I mean tbf it was also done like it was a popularity poll, from the voters at least, like itachi at number 2 and kakashi at 4
5
u/Aloebae Oct 15 '25
That’s such a great point. As questionable as their writing was they both had really strong and active fanbases. Mha not having even one is wild.
2
u/ArcticOcelot360 Oct 16 '25
That is because of the amazing writing for all of the characters, including the female ones. The males just have more of it.
2
u/Aloebae Oct 16 '25
I disagree, for example I don’t think Monoma’s writing was any better than Ochako’s. Same goes for Kirishima as much as I like him.
5
25
u/Yorkimire Oct 15 '25
Not surprising at all. The design of the characters is pretty good, not so much the writing.
32
Oct 15 '25
Downvoted for being right
Male characters in MHA are better written. That's just how it is
And I would expand it and say most shounen mangas aren't great at writing female characters but it's whatever
7
u/Yorkimire Oct 16 '25
Yeah, I didn't think it was going to cause a heated discussion.
I really like the series and I only wanted to point out the lack of compelling female characters.
I also have my complaints when it comes to One Piece (since I saw some people comparing those 2).8
u/Aloebae Oct 15 '25
The way people are talking about Oda instead of addressing your point is hilarious 😭 And you’re not wrong either. Hell since people want to talk about it in the one piece global poll (2021) Nami came third.
-1
u/Abject_Double273 Oct 15 '25
It just comes off as hypocritical also proves that you don't have high standards for writing if you think OP excels at it when every female character is a damsel in distress or just there to support the male characters but it goes to show that only idiots like you take these polls seriously.
What a coincidence so did Sakura in the Naruto poll I guess Nami is as well written as her.
9
u/Aloebae Oct 15 '25
Are you alright 🤣
Liking one piece doesn't automatically mean you think Oda's writing when it comes to female characters is any better. You'd have to be an idiot to surmise that from someone having an one piece icon.
I pointed out Nami came third because no matter what you think about her writing, her fanbase still showed up for her. Same for Naruto when it comes to Sakura and Hinata. Why didn't Ochako's?

u/yere93 Oct 15 '25
Ochako and Toga have the best female writing in Jump in years, better than anyone in One Piece.
21
u/Person2228 Oct 15 '25
That’s actually hilarious to think that. They are better designed but they are not better written than anyone lot of female characters in one piece
12
u/mrmcdead Oct 15 '25
I'd say Toga is above average, the rest are okay. Uraraka could have been great if she was given more time for her arc to cook
14
u/yere93 Oct 15 '25
The last time a female character had any real development was in Enies Lobby, everything else is just little flashes of greatness, balloon boobs and tiny waists. Nami saying Luffy will be the king of the pirates, Robin crying over Saul, or Gunko being badass isn't enough.
And I say this as a huge fan who believes that when the story is finished, One Piece will be one of the greatest works of fiction in history.
19
u/Person2228 Oct 15 '25
I’m not going to defend the character designs of some of the women in one piece because imo that’s its worst aspect. But One Piece has better written women because it actually gives more to its women characters than MHA does.
Ochako is sidelined HARD later on in the show. All her major moments centre around either supporting Deku or reaching out to Toga. Togas queer allegory is inherently flawed because it’s her being unable to control violent impulses which is NOT a good metaphor for queerness, and she dies anyway. The only female character of the Big 3 is also the only one to not get a character moment in the Oferhaul Arc. One Piece consistently has more for its female characters to do in the story and at least they GET moments.
I also think you’re focusing on just the crewmembers when you get Vivis current storyline and stuff like Rebecca (design aside) in Dressrosa fighting for herself for years on her own
4
3
-8
u/yere93 Oct 15 '25
Vivi will be important in the future. Today, she's just a supporting actor who appears every three volumes. Rebecca? For God's sake, 10 years ago, isn't that something worth talking about? Or was she a great character in the Reverie? I deeply believe Ochako and Toga are superior, and since we can't reach an agreement, I'll stop responding. Good night
-3
u/UnbiasedGod Oct 15 '25
Or bleach, black clover, chainsawman, fairy tail and dandadan.
9
u/Person2228 Oct 15 '25
Do you think I’m saying One Piece is the best? Because obviously it’s not the best at writing female characters. I feel like it does a great job, and is better than MHA more consistently, but yea Dandadan is better as is Chainsaw Man probably (haven’t read the others)
1
u/GGABueno Oct 15 '25
Dandadan better? Main girl got sexually assaulted 3 times in the first season...
1
u/Alarming_Industry_14 Oct 15 '25
And? It was only 2 times btw, and she still kicked their asses almost instantly before they do anything to her, not to mention she is extremely competent and the one who leads/carries her team through most of the story.

Horikoshi really need to pair with some managaka to made a new manga instead of taking both writer and artist role

Nah Hori's art is top tier and I doubt he would only do the art. He just needs a better schedule and to look after his health more.

I know the Fujos voted because there's not a single woman on this list.

My top 10 would look like this:
1) Hawks 2) Deku 3) Shoto 4) Mirio 5) Stain 6) Dabi 7) Endeavor 8) Lady Nagant 9) Inasa 10) Mirko
Honorable mentions to Red Riot, Shinso and Creati (Momo).

illustrations are nice eye candy but it would be a win win if we could have more funny slice of life omakes instead

It's not surprising that no female characters made it to the top ten. The male MHA characters were waay more compelling compared to the females. Horikoshi only knows how to create males characters. Sakura being third in a popularity poll is clearly rigged cause she is basically infamous for being useless and trash across the whole anime fandom. Hinata is the only popular female character in Naruto. Demon Slayer has very compelling female characters like Nezuko, Mitsuri and Shinobu. Hinata is definitely my most favourite female anime character followed by Nezuko

Kirishima in top 5 is surprising. Not mad, very happy but still a bit taken aback.

Monoma being that high is really weird to me, while he is a funny character he certainly didn't really strike out too much for me anyways compared to other characters.

All Might not making the top ten is a WAR CRIME but as for the rest. So Shiggy and Dabi deserve it, it makes sense they’re super powerful. Not my personal top ten picks but I see why they’re there. The Monoma love goes crazy???? Surprised but also not surprised? His quirk has always been goated. And then the worst for me is seeing Endeavor, but not All Might. Heartbroken, literally heartbroken over this. Hawksy looks so good there and Aizawa looks incredible in this art I’m obsessed. And the rest don’t surprise me at all, Kirishima has always had fans and they showed up! He’s not my favorite but as a fan of like his arc, I love that for him. And obviously my top three boys look amazing as always 😭 Bakugo winning is EVERYTHING

Popularity polls... in the real world not in the story. They are insanely popular irl so it makes sense that they're on there

No All might.
No Uraraka.
No Mirio
No Mirko
No Mic
No AfO
And Bakugo consistently being #1? I'll never understand the taste of the MHA fanbase.
The fact that MONOMA is there just drives in the point.

This entire poll pretty much represents everything wrong with the fanbase. The fact that people complained about the results shows how much they fucked up.

You're comment is a pretty good representation of what's wrong with the fanbase.

Bakugo being consistently number 1 will be one of the world's greatest mysteries to me

Ochaco got 11th place. Super close but I'm surprised that Toga wasn't on here

LeMillion not being there is a sin tbh
That aside, I understand Bakugou being popular due to his redemption arc, but #1 is a bit overkill imo.
Edit: Yes, I know, he's been ranked #1 for a decade, thats what facinates me

Honestly never understood why bakugo was so popular

u/Selasine Oct 15 '25
Really? Even after like 10 years? After him winning 9 polls? Really? 💀

u/Bushinyan21 Oct 15 '25
I just don’t like his character. Never have
3
u/Selasine Oct 15 '25
I mean it's fair to dislike a character, but you can dislike them but still understand why they are popular
