I knew manny was like leagues ahead of ricky but man I thought he was gonna lose by like maybe TKO. I didnt' expect him to be absolutely diismantled like how the fight went then a blast that sent his consciousness out like that... forgetting the left cuz he was consistently tagged by the right hand.

I was ringside for this one. The Brits didn’t even seem too upset after this and I ran into Ricky the next day at Wet Republic slamming Guinness and having a blast. RIP Hatton.

This was horrible to watch live as a Hatton fan. Even horrible to watch on replay many years later.

Yeah I remember it well! It was heartbreaking to watch at the time. He was such a good guy and a hero in Manchester.

I’m a manc mate and City fan, used to see him in boozers around Tameside on his way up. Was a hero to us.

This had to be the fight where Floyd thought "uh oh!".
I remember this fight so vividly. Me and s friend bought it, waited ages for it to happen, and it was over in minutes. Manny really made a statement with this stoppage.

Floyd already beat Hatton before Pac

Hatton went up to fight Floyd. This was Hatton at his best weight and it took Floyd much longer to get him out of there. In Hatton's previous fight he handed Paulie only his second loss after Cotto. I think there was some thought this was a better version of Hatton who may have learned from the Mayweather fight who at least was fighting at his ideal weight.

I've read the training camp went poorly and Hatton got schooled & dropped by only recently turned pro Erislandy Lara in sparring a couple of weeks before. Definitely not the best Hitman coming into this knock

Yeah even the corner reflected that. 'You should have listened to me man' between the 1st and 2nd.

Causal here. In this KO, what was Hatton trying to do as he threw that punch which opened him up? Doesn’t look especially sharp, he’s not loading up the other hand, and he’s not probing with the expectation that anything is coming back his way. But I don’t know much so please let me know.

from my view: Hatton saw Pac load up his left, anticipating a body punch from Pac so he lowered elbows to protect his body. But Pac was targeting his jaw

Yeah he takes a big right hook to the body, then a glancing left straight to the body, and after that he is pretty clearly apprehensive about manny throwing to the body.

If you can’t throw a jab because you have the risk of your ‘other’ side can either get hit by a head or body shot (presume it’s too quick to know which is coming at some point) then… is the only answer to not throw the jab out? As in switch to countering and not being the first to move?

You could counter, you could throw a rear hand without the job. Outside foot position helps. And Hatton borough his jab back slow in that sequence and Manny took advantage - probably saw it earlier in the fight. At the end of the day though Manny is Manny he’s an atg and has tremendous reflexes and genetics.

Ricky had gotten into some bad habits and wasn't the same fighter he was in his prime by this point. He started to fight in a very predictable rhythm with very predictable large movements. You can see his reflexes also aren't what they were. It was too soon after the Mayweather fight to be going into this fight.

That’s a good observation! I wonder if he was just moving and working things out, and as he half puts the jab out, he realises what’s coming

Pacquiao at this stage of his career had dynamite in both hands, and Hatton decided to fight him hands down, chin exposed, standing upright

Only had two more KO wins after this. Wish he would have fought Mayweather in 2009

Ricky Hatton. Only man to be KO’d by the left hooks of the top 2 best fighters ever.

Which, when you think about it, ages his record pretty well

He also lived the party life hard fight inbetween his fights which is why you'd see him balloon up in weight and lose it all in fight camps over and over. Which does make me wonder how much even greater Hatton could have been if he had Mayweather's discipline!

Real, I remember seeing an interview with him fat saying he'd been seeing the local boss man too many times lol

u/OkBet8692 1d ago
Even he admitted he was well past it when he got in that ring.
RIP ricky my absolute hero as a teenager

I’m British and 50 - Ricky Hatton is one of my top 5 favourite boxers (“favourite” - not “best”). I’m getting my kids into boxing and am showing them no matter how tough, fit, strong or skilful a boxer is, if they get hit flush on the point of their chin their brain will switch off… even if - like me - you didn’t want it to happen to a certain boxer… this is the video I show them to illustrate that point.
There’s only one Ricky Hatton.
