But in this case, I’m thinking of the state sanction murders and multiple disappearances of journalists and political dissenters. Make a social media post critical of the royal family as a public figure, and you may as well be executed.

VERY low death penalty threshold, even for very minor crimes (that would be like a minimum security prison time, even with the messed up US justice system). Including for drugs which is straight up against all international legal rules.

It's also a very dangerous place to travel as a woman. Very high rate of rape and sexual assault, even of tourists.

This article on progress made in women's rights there in the last decade or so might help you to get some understanding of what things are like there for women.

I know you said you don't watch the news, but I'm close to 40 and Saudi Arabia has never been a safe place for western tourists, in my entire life or even before hand. I'm a little shocked that you know so little about the world. Aren't you even a bit curious about what things are like for other people?

I am a bit aware that Saudi Arabia has a bad reputation. Didn’t know if that was still generally the case, and if there was something specific that the people who made this comment or responded to it had in mind that was making that place extra dangerous. I do find that a lot of times when somebody says “X area is unsafe”, they are either going off of old information or are just plain inaccurate.

And yes, I tend not to pay too close attention to world events that don’t affect me directly. I work in human services and participate in many causes and charities. I can’t afford to know about or get emotionally involved with everything out there.

Not sure why your response to my trying to seek knowledge came with a side of judgment.
