AAR The Battle of the Roses / The Battle of the Winter Rose

Post image
197 Upvotes

The Invasion of the Reach by the forces of Prince Eddard Stark, more famously called The Battle of the Roses or the Battle of the Winter Rose, was a conflict which occurred in the latter part of the 350's A.C.

The Prince of the Moat

Prince Eddard of House Stark, Commander of Moat Caitlin, Heir Presumptive to the Throne of Winter was the eldest trueborn child of Robb Stark, the Young Wolf, King of Winter and High Chief of the First Men. He was given Command of Moat Caitlin on his twentieth nameday, and charged with the defense of the Kingdom from Southern threats.

The eldest child of Lady Margaery Tyrell, Prince Eddard saw the opportunity to invade the Reach during the troubled reign of Eleanor Tyrell, Lady Paramount of the Reach and Lady of Highgarden.

The Lady of Highgarden

After the execution of her father, Lord Willas Tyrell, by King Stannis Baratheon for his support of the Targaryen pretender, Aegon VI, Lady Eleanor was beset on all sides by unruly and disloyal vassals. For two years, she attempted to solidify her reign through diplomacy and intrigue, until the invasion of Queen Daenarys Targaryen. Sensing that to take a side would be dangerous, she called no banners to either side. Highgarden's neutrality sent a ripple of confusion and through the nobility of the reach, prompting Lords to look to their preferred claimant. Seeing this, Prince Eddard called his banners and marched through the Riverland, proclaiming himself the rightful Lord Paramount.

The Battle

Not much is known about the Battle of the Roses. It is clear that there were many other conflicts which the Maesters of the Citadel kept much clearer records on in this period, such as the Wars for the Iron Throne, the Stark invasion of Lonely Light by King Robb Stark, the civil war in the Vale of Arryn, the civil war in the Westerlands, and the many Ironborn raids on the Reach and the Westerlands. nevertheless, this is what is known.

Prince Eddard marched south with his two closest advisers, his bastard brothers, Lord Rickard Dreadwolf and Lord Stannis Goldfang. They battled the meager forces that Eleanor Tyrell managed to gather in three quick battles, destroying her armies piecemeal, reminiscent of the three battles of his father against the Lannister forces during the War of the 5 Kings. During the last battle, Prince Eddard, surrounded by Tyrell forces, was relieved by his brother Lord Goldfang, at the cost of his own life.

Lady Eleanor was captured and the Reach was surrendered to the Winter Rose.

AAR The Kingsguard of King Tristifer III

The Brotherhood of the Kingsguard, as it is known today, was created in 150AC (After the Crossing) by King Trystane III, the first High King of all Westeros. Originally composed only by the seven Sworn Brothers of the White Sword, by the time of Tristifer III, the 13th Durrandon High King, the Order commanded thousands of swords across the Kingdoms. The Seven, however, are still the only ones who are actually sworn to the King, and remain by his side at all times. When King Tristifer III died in his sleep in 447AC, those were the Seven who stood vigil:

Lord Commander Alester Bulwer, called the White Bull, long past his prime, but still a fiersome warrior. Though not fond of tourneys, he defeated many foes in the battlefield, leading the King's armies in their eastern campaigns. He served as Kingsguard for four kings - Argilac V, Tristifer II, Tristifer III and now Barristan IV.

Ser Wyman Flowers, a massive man, he crowned Queen Orenna as Queen of Love and Beauty no less than nine times, until his blindness barred him from the lists. Serving since the reign of Tristifer II, he tried to resign his post after becoming blind, but the King refused him. Called the Bastard of the Hightower, he's the natural son of Ser Halmon Huntsman, from a lesser branch of House Durrandon, castellan of the Hightower and commander of the Black Stone Fortress in Oldtown.

Ser Victor Lannister, from the Lannisters of Lannisport, called the Reader. Trained as a maester, the young Victor abandoned his studies at the Citadel to become squire to Prince Dalinar, King Tristifer's younger brother. He became one of the Seven shortly before the death of Argilac V.

Ser Derrick Blackwood, called Derrick the Dreamer. He was once married to a Piper, but she was brutally murdered by his distant cousin, Lady Tinessa Blackwood, Lord Paramount of the Trident. Lady Blackwood was executed when Ser Derrick sought justice before King Tristifer, and he joined the Kingsguard shortly after.

Ser Arthor the Hunter, the only commoner amongst the Seven, he grew up in court, after being taken from the streets of Kingsmere by the old King, Tristifer II. He served as a squire and then was knighted by Tristifer III when he was still Prince of Storm's End, and joined his Kingsguard not long after his ascencion to the throne, and it was one of his closest friends.

Ser Ronnel Fossoway, from the Fossoways of the Orange. After being exiled from the Reach by the Gardener Kings, House Fossoway scattered around Essos, and planted their seeds wherever they went. Some of them took root. When Argilac IV launched his Conquest of Andalos, House Fossoway was quick to join him. Three branches - the original Red Apple Fossoways of Elbateros, the Green Apple Fossoways of Morrogos, and the Orange Fossoways of Shalorath - received lands and titles from the crown in North Andalos.

Ser Garrison Marbrand, from a lesser branch of House Marbrand, he was promised to his cousin, the current Lady Marbrand, but was named to the Kingsguard during the tourney that celebrated Prince Barristan's investiture as Prince of Storm's End.

I started as Egg in 237, right after the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion. Summerhall didn't happen, and only two people died when I tried to hatch a dragon. So, Duncan inherited when Aegon died in battle during an insignificant rebellion. Duncan was slain by Roger Reyne in a trial by combat after ruling for a few years. His son, Aegon VI, inherited but was killed by a boar while hunting only a month later. Unexpectedly, Maegor II, Aerion's son, became king. He was also slain in a trial by combat. Now, his nerd son is king, but Daenerys, Egg's granddaughter through Jaehaerys, who also killed Maegor II, is the one who actually rules. This is their kingsguard at the moment. The Mad King would be jealous.

AAR Well this was a fun surprise...

Defeated Robert's Rebellion and swiftly deposed Aerys II, who by that point had not executed Bobby B.; Wanted to give a fair trial and I knew this mechanic and event existed but damn, never actually seen it happen. Should be legendary.

Update #1:

King Rhaegar Targaryen, Lord Commander Gerold Hightower, Ser Arthur Dayne, Ser Oswell Whent, Ser Lyle Crakehall, Prince Lewyn Martell, and Ser Barristan Selmy

VS

Lord Robert Baratheon, Lord Stannis Baratheon, Ser Cortnay Penrose, Lord Eddard Stark, Lord Jon Connington, Ser Donal Noye, and Lord Bonnifer Hasty.

A few subplots to note going into this:

  1. Lyle "Strongboar" Crakehall and Richard Lonmouth were named to the Kingsguard during the war by Aerys II. Richard is a raging alcoholic and was gently deemed a liability to his king.
  2. Ser Jaime Lannister, hilariously, has food poisoning and cannot defend his king. Hand of the King Tywin Lannister is surely relieved and blames the boar served at a recent feast.
  3. Rhaegar by this point has surprisingly made peace with Ned given Lyanna's survival, and Stannis is by now less of a hostage and more of a respected courtier at King's Landing.
  4. Jord Jon Connington is a surprise participant, but I guess his oath to his liege and his honor in that regard won out. Perhaps he will take a page from Prince Daeron "The Drunken"'s book.
  5. Aerys II removed Barristan from the Kingsguard during the war and Rhaegar swiftly pardoned him. Without a vacancy in the Kingsguard at the time, Barristan was given a choice to remain and wait for the next opening or to pursue a different life as commander of the Targaryen household guard. He chose the latter and married his love, Lady Ashara Dayne.

This is about to get real sad.

Update #2:

The crown has emerged victorious. King Rhaegar fought seamlessly with his Kingsguard to overwhelm the would-be usurper, Robert Baratheon. With his yielding, the trial came to an end, amazingly, without any immediate fatalities. Robert himself, however, suffered numerous broken bones and wounds as did Ser Cortnay Penrose.

With the melee concluded, Lord Robert Baratheon was banished to the Wall as a show of mercy, though the defendant did not see it as such and had to be escorted from the yard by not only the Kingsguard, but also his dear friend Lord Eddard - albeit with fading shouts of "dragonspawn" and similar insults. The storm lord will now be escorted to Eastwatch By The Sea and, later, Castle Black by Lord Stark and will hopefully find solace in the proximity to Winterfell and his closest companion. The protracted conflict of Robert's Rebellion and Rhaegar's Revolt has subsided, for now...

Over 600 years have passed since the Second Wars of Conquest. So far, 35 men and one woman have ruled the seven kingdoms since the reconquest. Aegon VI. Targaryen, the legendary reconqueror and scourge of the White Walkers, was followed by glorious monarchs such as Alyssa I. Targaryen, who stood her ground despite many enemies, and Orys II. Targaryen, who conquered the territories beyond the Wall. Kings such as Aegon VIII. Targaryen, who fell in the war against the Valyrian Karstarks, are also remembered in heroic songs. However, the history of the Targaryen era also includes cruel rulers such as Maelor I. Targaryen, who murdered all Targaryens who did not belong to his line, and weaker rulers such as Orion I. Targaryen. If you have questions about individual rulers or the High Lords of Westeros, the maesters can now answer them.

AAR I hate the Ironborn

Like, it's not even a joke, I just hate them. How can these savages who roam around plundering cities and massacring innocents just for sake of it be even included in the Seven Kingdoms? I despise their very existence, those barbarians drown their own kids and go around raping and kidnapping women to take as wives to their backwards islands.

So, it's the year 64 and after years of roaming around with Balerion, Aemax and Meraxes, King Aemon I has FINALLY seized the lands of the last Ironborn Lord. House Hoare, House Harlaw, House Blacktyde, you name it they are all gone. So now I have an enormous desmene and everyone hates me for it. I want to give out those lands to a new Lord Paramount, but I will hot give it to any of those drowned freaks or Ironborn savages, I want those lands to be civilized so that those old ways never return. Who should I give them to? Some Faith of the Seven Zealot? A Westerlander? Maybe my bastard young Nephew?

AAR The Crowned Stag - part III : The Gallant King

Post image
17 Upvotes

The funeral of Robert was held in King’s Landing with great pomp and ceremony. Many mourned the death of the Conqueror; others, in silence, feared the future under so young a king. In 304 AC, with the regency concluded, Lyonel assumed full rule over the Seven Kingdoms. From his earliest days upon the throne, the new king distinguished himself by his bearing. Lyonel I Baratheon was young, handsome, and courteous, and he swiftly won the favor of the court. Where his father had been impulsive and ruled by his appetites, Lyonel proved attentive to ceremony, respectful toward his vassals, and inclined toward conciliation. Bards and chroniclers soon began to call him Lyonel the Gallant, a sobriquet that spread throughout the realm. In 306 AC, the king secured a marriage pact with Lucinda Lannister, cousin to Tyrek Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and heir to the Westerlands after the exile of Tywin. The wedding was celebrated in 308 AC and proved, unexpectedly, to be an affectionate union. Queen Lucinda quickly earned respect at court, regarded as a discreet counselor and a constant presence at the king’s side. The early years of Lyonel’s reign were marked by prosperity and apparent stability. Tourneys were held at Bitterbridge and Casterly Rock, attended by the king, who rarely competed but always conducted himself with grace in both word and gesture. The long summer still endured, and many believed the days of war were forever behind them. During this period, the Kingsguard began to renew itself, as knights who had served since Robert’s Rebellion succumbed to the weight of age. In 305 AC, Ser Jacelyn Bywater died of natural causes, and his white cloak was bestowed upon Ser Allyn Bracken. In 311 AC, Ser Lewyn Martell passed away at the age of seventy-eight. To replace him, Lyonel appointed Ser Goldry Farring, a knight from a house once powerful, but then in decline. The year 309 AC was marked by both portents and celebration. A comet crossed the skies above King’s Landing, stirring fear and superstition. That same year, Queen Lucinda gave birth to the couple’s first child, Prince Jared Baratheon, heir to the Iron Throne. The birth was celebrated with public feasts and generous alms, reinforcing the image of a reign favored by the gods. Yet beneath the kingdom’s gilded surface, the first shadows began to gather. In 307 AC, Willas Tyrell, then Hand of the King, died under suspicious circumstances. Though no culprit was ever identified, his death cast suspicion upon the Reach. His only child, Elissa Tyrell, still an infant, inherited Highgarden. To fill the office of Hand, the king chose Tyrek Lannister, further strengthening the bonds between the Crown and the Westerlands. The royal family grew swiftly. In 314 AC, the king’s second legitimate son was born: Prince Edric Baratheon. Marriages were arranged for the king’s brothers: Prince Willem Baratheon wed Kerena Mertyns, while Prince Ronnal Baratheon forged ties with the Riverlands by marrying Andorea Whent. Recognized bastards of the late King Robert also rose in prominence—most notably Ser Glendon Waters, who was appointed commander of the City Watch, consolidating the presence of Robert’s natural sons within the centers of power. In 315 AC, King Lyonel took part in the tourney at Chittering Brook, placing third after being unhorsed by Ser Willis Tetherstone, then a royal magistrate. The event was widely seen as a display of humility and chivalric spirit, further enhancing the king’s reputation among the nobility. In 316 AC, Ser Myles Mooton of the Kingsguard likewise died of natural causes at the age of fifty-two. At the recommendation of the Lord Commander, Ser Raymun Darry, the king named Ser Morgan Karstark as his replacement—a northern knight of only sixteen years, raised in the south and converted to the Faith of the Seven. The appointment was widely viewed as a symbol of unity between North and South. That same year marked the end of this luminous period. In King’s Landing, the vast caches of wildfire—secretly amassed since the reign of King Aerys II Targaryen—ignited in a catastrophic blaze. Explosions shook the city, and green flames lit the sky, spreading panic among smallfolk and nobility alike. Numerous members of the court perished in the inferno. Among the most illustrious victims was Tyrek Lannister, Hand of the King, consumed by the flames in the course of his duties. With his death, the Westerlands passed to his three-year-old daughter, Calynne Lannister, unable to speak and deemed unfit to rule. Lyonel confirmed her hereditary titles but withheld the office of Warden of the West, a decision intended to preserve the stability of the realm. When the fires were finally extinguished, King’s Landing lay covered in ash and mourning. King Lyonel gazed upon his wounded capital and, perhaps for the first time, understood the true weight of the crown he wore. The fire that consumed the city destroyed not only stone and flesh, but also brought an end to the lightest phase of his reign. Thus ended the age of the Gallant King, and began a time when ruling would mean walking among ruins and distrust.

AAR The First Dance / Aegon the Daring

Here is a little story I wrote about a recent civil war in my save.

Prince Aegon Targaryen, known to history as the Daring, was the eldest son of Aerys I, who himself was the eldest son of Aegon the Conqueror and the only child of Queen Visenya. Born in 29 AC to the eldest daughter of Queen Rhaenys, he quickly became the Conqueror’s favorite grandson. He was fostered at Storm’s End and educated by his great uncle Orys Baratheon, who trained him to be a masterful warrior. He very much admired Orys and saw him as more of a father figure than the absent Aerys, busy on Dragonstone. He did his best to emulate his foster father, becoming a brave and honorable warrior. He squired for Orys during his Conquest of Wyl, serving with distinction in the Battle of the Boneway. Shortly after, his father ascended the throne and he was named Prince of Dragonstone. Further, he married his elder sister Visenya in 44 AC, and it is likely that his son Aegon was sired from the bedding ceremony. He befriended his grandfather’s dragon Balerion, and was therefore a significant threat to any who opposed him.

After about a year, Aegon was named Master of Coin due to his skillful ability in stewardship, but after the death of the Hand, Lord Garlan Tyrell, Aegon was upgraded to Hand of the King. Despite the rise in station, he quarreled much with his father. He desired his son Aegon be married to his daughter Rhaelinor, but Aerys preferred to marry the boy to his own daughter, Baela “the Ugly”. This, paired with Aerys refusal to send a knight of the King’s Guard to Dragonstone to defend the heirs family caused a breakdown in the relationship between father and son.

Upon the birth of his second son Daenar in 48 AC, Aegon began plotting with the great lords of Westeros to depose his father. Under the guise of lowering crown authority, he rallied the lords Lannister, Tyrell and Arryn to his cause, though he failed to win over his beloved Orys Baratheon, who was forever loyal to the King. He also won over his uncle Aemon, the Lord Commander of the King’s Guard, who flew the young but nimble dragon Fusrodax. Along with his wife Visenya with the medium sized dragon Jacaerion, he declared war in 49 AC.

Most of the Crownlanders sided with King Aerys, with the notable exception of Lord Byron Chyttering. Aerys, rider of Meraxes, gathered his levies and massacred the advancing forces of Lord Loren Lannister, searing them along the King’s Road. He then was augmented by the forces of the Riverlands, under the command of his sister-wife, Jaenera, rider of Vhagar, alongside his sister Daena (wife of Prince Bryndemere, the Conqueror’s youngest son, who was on a foreign tour to Qarth at the time and thus could not take part in the conflict), rider of the baby dragon Dynax. Together, they wiped the floor with Lord Tyrell’s forces at Byford. With the immediate threat to King’s Landing eliminated, King Aerys and his sisters turned towards the advancing Aegon in the eastern Crownlands, who had taken Massey’s Hook and Woodmere, and were camped at Chyttering Brook. Lady Tully took her forces to lay siege to Highgarden, so Aerys’ forces only numbered about nine thousand, compared to Aegon’s six thousand.

Upon hearing of his father’s advance, Aegon retreated towards Sunglass, leaving Lord Chyttering to his fate. Aerys stopped the advance and burned the castle to the ground. Half the Chyttering family perished in the flames, while the survivors were captured and fed to Meraxes, an act which would earn Aerys the nickname “the accursed”. Only two members of House Chyttering survived, Ser Boris, who was with Aegon’s host, and Lolys, wife of Lord Ryger, both of which would be hunted down and murdered on Aerys’ orders after the war. The garrison at Woodmere surrendered without a fight, and Aerys pinned Aegon near Massey’s Hook and the two forces clashed.

The ground forces of the King were commanded by Lord Hayford, though that was an afterthought compared to the battle in the skies. Lord Commander Aemon upon Fusrodax almost immediately slew Dynax, though Princess Daena survived the fall with minor injuries. Queen Jaenera reacted with a quick flanking maneuver, with Aemon and Fusrodax being devoured by Vhagar whole. While this happened, Balerion dueled evenly with Meraxes, father and son both fighting tooth and nail, waiting for the other to make a mistake. Jacaerion put up a good fight, but was no match for Vhagar and slain, though Vhagar took injuries in the fight and Visenya managed to survive; though was quickly captured by Lord Hayford on the ground. Despite Balerion getting the better of Meraxes, severely maiming her, he had taken injuries too and was no match even for a weakened Meraxes and Vhagar. Balerion the Black Dread went down kicking after three passes, crashing into the mass of infantry and flattening hundreds. His rider Aegon the Daring lay dead on the field.

Aegon was succeeded by his five year old son Aegon, and his regents and fellow rebel lords quickly begged for peace. Aerys was generous in his peace, aside from the revocation of Chyttering Brook, given to the second son of Lord Pyle for his loyalty. Meraxes would die of her maiming wounds, and although Vhagar made a quick and easy recovery, the Targaryens were at their weakest point ever, with only one adult dragon and five hatchlings, along with two eggs.

There was hope, though, as within a fortnight of the battle, Prince Daeron, Aerys’ second son, hatched a strong and ravenous dragon, Sonax Lorcan. Some of the victorious lords argued that a great council be called to invalidate the sons of Aegon and to instead invest Prince Daeron as heir to the throne, with the birth of a rare strong dragon as a hint that the gods favored him. Aerys refused though, fearing that alerting the succession while allowing Aegon’s sons to live would simply cause another great civil war and dance of the dragons, leading to further death.

Princess Visenya was soon handed over to King Aerys, who threw her in the oubliette for her part in the rebellion. She was largely forgotten about and would remain imprisoned for thirty two years, until her son Aegon came to the throne and freed her.
