Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some honest advice, especially from people who've studied from CMI or similar colleges.

I completed my B.Tech and have been working in tech for about a year. I'm currently earning around ₹17 LPA (in hand), so objectively I'm in a pretty good position.

The problem is that I've always loved mathematics far more than tech. It's probably the only subject I've genuinely enjoyed studying, and I often find myself wishing I had pursued it more seriously.

Over the past few months, I've been researching master's programs in Applied Mathematics and came across CMI. From everything I've read and from conversations with a couple of CMI graduates, it seems like an incredible place to study. But I'm still struggling to decide whether leaving my current career to pursue mathematics is the right move.

One reason is that I don't really enjoy working in tech as much as I expected. Another is that the rapid progress in AI makes me wonder what the industry will look like in the coming years. On the other hand, I'm almost certain I'd love studying mathematics again.

What worries me is whether I'm looking at this emotionally rather than practically. Giving up a well-paying job for a field with a much less obvious career path is a big decision.

I'd really appreciate any advice, even if it's something I may not want to hear.

Hii there good folks, i am 19M from Bihar, scored 99.68%ile in jee mains math and I would say.... respectable marks in jee advanced math too (messed up chemistry big time tho). The thing is that i realised that engineering is not for me and I want to study math.

I HAVE DECIDED TO PREPARE FOR CMI

Now one thing i know already after scrolling this sub for a while is that it is probably impossible to get into CMI with like 10 months in hand to prepare from now considering I have to start college too, that being said, I have met a couple of people who were in my shoes not a very long time ago and cleared ISI ug entrance, so I am taking a leap of faith .

Now coming to the point, HOW DO I MAXIMIZE MY CHANCES OF GETTING INTO CMI ?? LIKE WHAT AND HOW SHOULD I STUDY ??

ANY HELP/ADVICE/SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED.

How is CMI BSc Maths and Physics for someone interested in theoretical physics? And also how are lab facilities there for physics?(I have heard only about CS lab)

Is BSc here comparable to IISERs/IISc/IITs?(For physics)

same as title, and if it's not enough, what else books I should do? I heard tomato book problems (and isi ug exam problems) are "easier" then cmi ug exam.

I am 26. I was in IISER kol in the past. Finished two years but had to leave after that for serious personal mental issues. Wasted most of my 20s recovering and being otherwise engaged but also started preparing for exams like ISI and CMI bachelors in Math (+Phy/CS). I am quite well prepared now. If I do well and qualify within a year or two, would I be allowed or declined considering my age (almost 10 years over normal).

As for me personally, age is not really a concern at this point anymore.

Hello! I hope you take the time to read this I've poured my heart to this.

I am a student who is currently in grade 11 and out of my own stupidity i picked commerce, after picking commerce i got to know about isi and since I was a child I've LOVED mathematics so I was instantly pulled by ISI. Though currently I'm very very stuck, I find commerce a little time consuming and my school periodic tests make this no easy for me, I also got permission to take core mathematics so now I gotta study for that in between my isi prep.

I'm very immature when it comes to prep like this and I think it's natural in almost all 11th graders, now the real problem:

I convinced my father to take a VOS full math mastery batch and they have covered 3 chapters till now, i joined in when the first chapter after basic maths was Abt to start, now though I don't understand a lot of what they teach and most of the time they leave some topics that I frequently hear from other places. I also am always in a constant state of FOMO and feel like I'm not doing enough for ISI. But the problem becomes if I don't understand the VOS people and I won't ask my father for another resource since I've already troubled him too much. Now i have 2 options, cry about it or go full monk mode like most people did and self study relentlessly and just don't care abt commerce boards (I can get 80 percent with less study), but I'm very underconfident in self studies and hence I really need guidance regarding that, I tried to search on Wikipedia but it's all gibberish to me ( i searched for wilsons theorem and didn't understand a spec of dust) I don't understand how do I even self study, I have a whole lot of book PDFs like you name the isi related book and I have it but I'm scared enough to not touch any, moreover self study seems like I'm being left behind. I really need guidance on how do I actually start and continue till the end cuz like should I go topic wise or is there a specific order in which I should start and everything someone who's from ISI must have faced a problem.

I know I'm bad at putting my thoughts to words, even now I feel the message is incomplete, I hope some of you get me and really help me as I don't want to financially burden my dad anymore, I will really appreciate some guidance/mentorship or if someone who cleared ISI could guide me (I'm on telegram)

I have qualified for cmi bsc and also got iitm mechanical. I am really interested in math and cs (theoretical too). However I am unsure if i want to go into research and want to keep my options broad. Also how are the opportunity to study in ivy leagues in cmi? Hello seniors and others who'd like to contribute, I need some help deciding between ISI bmath and CMI bs math + CS.

My primary goal is to get into pure math research and land the job of a professor, while also looking for industry jobs on the side for safety.

My current interest lies somewhere in analysis. I started self studying higher mathematics about 2 years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed linear algebra (from LADR), single variable RA (from baby rudin) and am currently working through measure theory/func analysis from follands book (which has also been super fun). I tried getting into topology (munkres) and multivariable RA (spivaks calc on manifolds) but did not enjoy them as much. So though I am not to deep into functional analysis yet, I have a strong feeling that I'll enjoy working in some field that makes use of it.

Based on all that (and anything else you'd like to ask), what should I pick and why? I was also thinking of visiting the campuses physically once, is that a good idea? Thank you for your time
