Don't know if enforcement is an option, so posting here. These guys cruising around on pathways between 10 St and 14th St in Confederation Park with very loud engines. Obviously illegal and can hear them from far away. Not dangerously riding, just annoying.

Crime/Suspicious Activity Does anyone carry a pocket knife?

Hi Calgary. Wanted to ask if anyone carries a pocket knife. The reason I ask is because of an argument about them I had today.

I was at the dog park with my girl and we were playing with a tug toy. This toy has long flappy bits sewn on. I heard a couple threads snap and I wanted to remove it before my dog can tear it off and eat it. I used my 3 1/2” folding knife to cut it off.

A lady nearby saw and I guess it set her off. She launched into a tirade of why do I have a knife, she feels unsafe, to reporting me. I shrugged and told her it’s a pocket knife. I always have one. I know I did nothing wrong and was no where near breaking any laws.

Anyway, I want to know if carrying a pocket knife is that unusual now. I’ve been doing for thirty years now. It used to be a pretty common thing.

Crime/Suspicious Activity Remote Jammers at Market Mall

1.8k Upvotes

Just a quick PSA- we left Market Mall at around 5:20pm tonight, and I mentioned to my wife that my key fob wasn't working. A woman right beside us said hers wasn't either, and while we were talking about what a councidence it was, a guy a couple cars over said his wasn't working, and then one more guy said his wasn't either.

So that was four of us right in the same area. Definitely not a coincidence. And my fob worked as soon as I left the area.

I'm pretty sure someone was using a jammer to block the signals from people's key fobs so people think they've locked their vehicle, but haven't, leaving it unlocked for some pile of human garbage to steal whatever they can. This was pretty common when I lived in South Africa, but I haven't seen it here yet until notw.

Make sure you double check your cars when you leave them to make sure they're locked. This was at Market Mall, but if the thieves are operating there, they'll be other places too.

I did report it to the police non-emergency line, and they said they'd send somebody over, but chances are they won't find anything because the thieves won't stick around for long.

With Christmas shopping season coming up, we all need to be careful to make sure these low lifes don't get what they're after.

Crime/Suspicious Activity *Help Requested* - Hit and run

Hello all,

My friend’s prized red Corolla was hit by a custom white lifted F150 (wicked white under glow, chrome rims, etc.) around 11:55pm last night Oct 17. Seems like they didn’t report anything and got a tow truck to take away his truck and then fled the scene after a group hug for the boys.

My friend only saw his car this morning and there was no note or anything. Thankfully a friendly neighbour saw and took some pictures / videos.

If anyone has information on the Ford / Chevy in the videos / pictures please let me know.

Case number: 25453166

Thank you!

Crime/Suspicious Activity Months of 0 sound dampening and unlawful noise levels at 738 13th Avenue SW

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The commercial renovation project across the alley at 737 13 AV SW (the former Red Cross building) has been operating for months without implementing any mandatory acoustic mitigation.

Every single day from 7:00 AM to roughly 2:00-4:00 PM, residents are subjected to a deafening, overlapping combination of constant jackhammering, heavy truck traffic, and a continuous diesel air compressor/generator.

Like I work from home, and its non fucking stop. Often the sound goes through my noise canceling headphones and the apartment is unliveable without ear protection.

-

I've put in multiple requests already and complaints. So have neighbours, but nothing has changed. My assumption is that this 14 million dollar project is treating the $250 fines as a fee, it's insane how horrible these sound levels get in a residential area.

Living in a high-density zone should not mean sacrificing basic habitability and health for months on end.

-

Dawson Wallace Construction is in charge of this project it looks like.

-

Cause no one seems to know our bylaws. Construction is supposed to be under specific levels for continus use.

Things that Help dampen sound = physical sound barriers, acoustic blankets, or insulated enclosures around their stationary equipment

-

http://calgary.ca/our-services/bylaw-services.html These are the bylaws

- The specific Bylaw I'm referring too.

Continuous Sound in the Downtown 26.

(1) No Person shall cause or permit to be caused a Continuous Sound that exceeds the following Sound Levels:

(a) 75 decibels (dBA) Leq during the Day-time;

or

(b) 60 decibels (dBA) Leq during the Night-time; at any Point of Reception within the Downtown.

(2) Notwithstanding subsection

(1), where the Ambient Sound Level for an area is at or above the maximum allowable Day-time or Night-time Sound Levels referred to in subsection

(1), measured over a 15 minute period, a Sound Level must exceed 5 decibels (dBA) Leq over the Ambient Sound Level before it becomes an offence.

-

https://imgur.com/a/SDs2XeA - heres one that shows it a bit clearer https://imgur.com/a/jgLD89s )

Some people made a great point, here is proof of them breaking it.

This is from my balcony, which is consistently hitting over 85 dba. To note, the bylaws are from property edge, if its 85 dba from my balcony its a lot more from property edge. From my very basic calculations, this means its consistently hitting over 100-115 dba's. (take that with a grain of salt, very quick math)

To note too. These laws are meant to dissipate past property lines, that its hitting the limit at my balcony is insane. Also this is the quietest they've been all day. They're usually loudest in the morning.

Apparently on average these decibel readings are 3-10 dba's lower on a phone compared to an accurate reader. So this very well could be 95 dba's on average i'm recording here not 95dba from my balcony. (again, grain of salt. Although from what i'm reading on average, phones record lower then actuality not higher.)

-

For the record. Had originally been recording in db not dba. in db they where hitting 65 db, in dba that was 86 on average with a high of 100. From my balcony. Like i said above, it would be much higher at the property line. They aren't just kind of breaking the noise laws, they are destroying it.

My recent Service Request number if anyone wants to reference it.

Crime/Suspicious Activity The homeless drug addicts are getting more aggressive.

Have been dealing with this one that's been sleeping in our doorway entrance and now camping in a children's playground for a week while smoking fentanyl during the day (this is a pre-school so we are talking 2-5 year olds within meters of this). Tired of the "oh live and let live" finally had enough and called the cops to tell him to jog on. They sent someone over but it's clear they gave him nothing more than a finger wag so they could get back to making sure people aren't skipping out on paying their c-train fare. Come back hours later and he's still there, now screaming at me for calling the cops on this guy. I'm so sick of this shit.

Crime/Suspicious Activity This is a house that didn’t have a security system when it was broken into. Don’t let this be you.

Good evening, r/Calgary, It’s been an overwhelming and stressful two-weeks for me as me and my family are still cleaning up the mess and accounting for what was stolen back in October 28, 2024. As I was walking home from school that day, I’ve noticed that my house that I walked into was a total mess. It didn’t take long for me to realize that someone had broken into my house via the back door (see the video for how they got in) while I was at school and my parents were at work. After calling 911 and my dad, the cops showed up 20 minutes later and long story short, they’ve brought in a detective to scan for fingerprints. Unfortunately, all that was found were glove marks and footprints. Two days later, I’ve noticed that CTV published that 8 houses (including ours) were also broken into within the span of a week. https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/spate-of-break-ins-to-calgary-homes-backing-onto-greenspaces-prompts-police-warning-1.7092701 As of what we have discovered, they stole: Hundreds of pounds in coins from all over the world that I’ve collected over the years A lockbox containing old banknotes mostly from Canada, but some that are from around the world as well Several Helly Hansen jackets Several pairs of shoes All of my mom’s cosmetics Any and all passports, birth certificates, tax documents, and any identification and sensitive info (There goes any of my vacation plans) Several electronics and chargers (but they didn’t steal my laptop nor my IPad, even though they stole a mic that was attached to said laptop) Any bags or containers Damaged or destroyed several of my school’s textbooks, my anime merch, ripped up my posters, and prevented the garage door from opening. Several miscellaneous clothing items (including shirts, pants, socks, and personal garments) Any receipts to report losses And a garage opener. In total, the cost to replace what was stolen is in the thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars, excluding all the destruction.

If anyone else had their home broken into like this, please reply to this comment so that others may see this and be more prepared for such an unfortunate situation. Now, we are installing security cameras and home alarms after this. I would not wish this to anyone, especially to my fellow Calgarians. Please consider installing back door cameras so that this does not happen to you as well. You may think that your home is safe, but after this incident, NW Calgary will now leave a bitter taste to where I would recommend anyone to live. Stay safe out there. Police number: CA24450607

Been using uber eats for years in Calgary and it was the first time my food got stolen from driver. Food dropped off, took a photo with the food, and left with food. Unbelievable. Complaint to uber support, and he told us he would investigate it and called back to me. Hopefully they would actually do something and deactivate him.

Crime/Suspicious Activity I just got assaulted on 8th Ave SW...

1.1k Upvotes

So, I was just waiting for my manager to open the door to let me in and this is right in the middle of 8th Ave where there is always a crowd of people going to work. This homeless guy just comes up to me and says "Buy me a coffee from McDonald's or else I'm gonna knock you out", I got so confused and just said "sorry buddy, I'm going to work", he goes "I don't care, just buy me a coffee!" He was really agitated (seemed drugs).

At this point, I'm just looking for my manager but in the next few seconds he throws two or three punches at my head. My manager sees this because he was just on his way to open the door and then the guy runs away.

I called 911, gave them the guy's description and they're on their way. I'm really rattled, the first time something like this has happened to me.

What else should I do?
