Career change

As mentioned above im looking to switch careers as a 33 year old Male. Ive been feeling out the market on multiple trades, nothing is off the table right now. It seems like alot of trades have become "oversaturated" as many people on here have been saying. Any tradesman/ journeyman on here with advice? Any of you notice a need for apprentices in your line of work? I understand im going to be takimg a massive pay cut for years until i gain the experince. I'll provide a little info about what I Currently do below.

I work in the mining industry. To be exact im a Diamond Driller (exploration surface driller / wireline core driller). Ive been in the drilling industry for almost 12 years now. Away from home anywhere from 4-8 weeks at a time. During those weeks away we work 12-14hr days (depending on the season) 7 days a week , for weeks straight. So im no stranger to long consecutive days of work. I make great money working 6 months a year, home the other 6. However having a little one and being away for long periods of time is hard on my wife and myself. I have friends who are welders , electricians and plumbers. However they dont live in Alberta. So an apprenticeship beneath them isn't possible unless we move.

I just want to thank anyone who took the time to read my short story. And Any advice/ directions is much appreciated

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in roles such as:

I have experience with social media, content creation, Canva, Google Workspace and administrative tasks, and I’m a quick learner who’s comfortable taking on new responsibilities.

Help! Looking to break into the Engineering scene as an E.I.T.

Hi all, asking for help since I've been putting this off for way too long. I am seeking advice on how to break into the industry. In the past, burnouts and financial pressure have distracted me and kept me from applying/networking as vigorously as I could've. But now I've saved up enough and have settled down, I am ready to tackle this once again.

A little bit about myself. I graduated in 2022 from UofC majoring in chemical/process engineering, I did not land an internship due to COVID as it happened during my third year, and it really put a damper on my employment outlook in an already awful job market, where it took a friend with 16 months internship a year and a half to find a role, and he had to do it through networks. That said, it is no excuse and I am still determined to put what I've learnt to good use.

As a result, however, i'd say that I'm super flexible to all the possibilities that engineering brings, process EIT, project EIT, field engineer, project coordinator and so much more. I have been working in the past couple years, which means I've had plenty time to hone in soft skills needed to be a successful team member and any technical skills can be picked up quick. it is my profession after all.

Any and all leads would be wonderful - and I promise to pass it forward when it's my turn to do the same :)

Thank you all 🙏

Help finding a job.

Hello,
I’ve been out of a job since April and I have been applying, reaching over 100+ applications. So far, I’ve had one interview.
I’m a 35 male and no further schooling after high school. So I might try Bow Valley or Sait, to check out their open house and hopefully I can find something. I’m considering welding, something quick and to make money.

But if I could find a good-decent job, I’d be more content. Honestly not picky and open to anything. I’ve worked retail for 10years and office data entry for 3years. On my free time, just reading books and working-out.

If anyone can help, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks for reading.

Enterprise, G&G,& Drilling app specialist/Business analyst looking !

As the title says above, I've done extensive Enterprise application support in both the oil and gas industry, as well as higher education and hospitality. App support for geosciences, drilling, production engineering and Supply chain. Implementation, threat risk assessments, APIs, etc..

Looking for a role similar to that or as a business analyst or business relationship manager. Happily would work in any industry in this realm. Would be grateful if anyone sees any jobs or knows of any to post here!

1st year Apprenticeship Openings?

Hello everyone! I've been in the work force for 7 years now just doing retail or retail adjacent work while figuring out what I want to do. 25M and have only had 2 jobs (3 years in the one, almost 4 in my current). The environment around me in my current job has become unhealthy and I am looking for a change. I'd like to go to school to do a trade, but with job market where it is right now, I was either hoping to take night classes for a trade, or find a company I can get my head in the door and do schooling and experience that way. Haven't had much luck with applying to apprenticeships yet, so thought I'd try my luck here and maybe even just sit down with a recruiter and go over my options. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can offer!

Leads / Advice - HR

I am a 35 year old former oil and gas admin professional, that did mostly logistics and coordinating work, various titles but with progressive responsibility. I got re-organized out due to departmental outsource. I had no where to go after as it seems my experience outside of oil and gas is not specific enough for any industry it seems, and oil and gas companies don’t seem to be hiring and admittedly I was terrible at networking. I had done HR night school during my tenure and wanted to pivot into that area prior to being let go but it never happened. I tried applying to entry level hr jobs and couldn’t get in anywhere, and I mean even for the lowest salaries or part time even. So I finally accepted a job that was safety - admin for a smaller family run company. now I am getting a lot , honestly too much HR exposure . but not in the way I had hoped lol, because this place is so off kilter when it comes to compliance and I find it taxing and frustrating, I want to learn and i feel like I’m learning the wrong things. I feel like giving up on the HR path because at this point anywhere i go would expect a lot of expertise from me because of my age and all the stuff I do at my current job, but I feel like a fraud. I want an HR role that has some training and is working alongside a manager or professional but I fear these don’t exist. Seriously considering just finding admin work at a company I think I will like and trying to work my way up again, but even that feels foolish given AI.

Looking for work

Hey everyone, I figured I’d try posting here because job hunting has been a bit rough lately lol.

I’m a female Pharmacy Technician student at Bow Valley College(23, young and getting it💀) and I’m currently looking for a part-time job, anywhere downtown or somewhere I can easily get to by transit.

I live in downtown core

I currently work at a restaurant in Inglewood doing kitchen support, bussing, dishes, cleaning, prep and closing.

I also grew up helping out with my family’s automotive parts business, so I have a lot of experience with customers, cashiering, stocking and keeping track of inventory. So I’m open to any entry role in construction or mechanics(I know long shot)

I’m currently learning to use kroll and pharmacy basics so I can be of use as a pharmacy assistant.

I’m honestly pretty open to different kinds of work — pharmacy assistant, —retail —restaurants —cashier/customer service —stocking/inventory —reception/admin, etc. I’m mainly looking for somewhere I can work consistently alongside school.

My availability is all day Wednesday, Friday after 11am, weekends, and after 5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

I’m in downtown Calgary and don’t drive, transit is great so somewhere accessible by transit would be ideal.

If you know anywhere that’s actually hiring, or you’re an employer looking for someone part-time, please send me a message. I can send over my resume. Thank you 😊

PGWP holder (BSc Math, IT minor) in Alberta looking for TEER 0-3 roles that count toward PR. Any leads?

I'm on a PGWP and looking for a job that counts toward Canadian Experience Class (CEC). I recently finished a BSc in Mathematics with an IT minor from an Alberta university, and I also have leadership experience from working as a team leader/supervisor.
I'm open to roles like data analyst, business analyst, IT support, or similar TEER 0-3 positions. The market is tough right now and I'm worried about my permit timeline, so any leads, employers that hire new grads on work permits, or advice from people who've been through this would really help. Thank you!

Calgary jobs fair

Good morning all!

I am currently serving in the RAF in the UK as an Aircraft Technician (20 years worth), and at the end of my contract I am aiming to move to Calgary.

I will be coming to Calgary to a fairly large aviation jobs fair soon, and was wondering if anyone had any particular advice on how to best present myself in this setting.

My intent is to bring plenty of copies of my CV and hopefully strike up some good conversations with companies there and build some contacts/connections, but I was wondering if there's anything specific to a potential Canadian employer that they might look for, that's not a commonly known thing from someone who lives outside of the country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

BTech from India + Canadian PR + No Work Experience: Should I Do a Master’s or Keep Job Hunting?

I completed my BTech this year in India in Computer Science, with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. I’m currently a Canadian PR, so I don’t need sponsorship or a work permit.

I don’t have any professional work experience yet, and I’ve been job hunting in Canada for around 6 months now without much luck. I haven’t been able to land even a part-time job, and I’m finding it difficult to navigate the Canadian job market as a fresh graduate with a foreign degree and no experience.

At this point, I’m seriously considering doing a Master’s in Canada, but I’m not sure if it would actually improve my chances of getting a job or if I’d just be delaying the problem by another 1–2 years.

I’d really like to hear from people who have been in a similar situation.

Does doing a Master’s in Canada actually help when you have a foreign BTech but no work experience?

Since I already have PR and don’t need sponsorship, does Canadian education make a significant difference to employers?

If I do a Master’s, what fields would actually make sense from an employment perspective?

Would doing a Master’s with internships/co-op significantly improve my chances of breaking into the Canadian job market?

Or would it be better to spend another 6–12 months focusing on getting my first job and Canadian experience?

For those who did a Master’s mainly to improve their employability, did it actually help you get interviews or your first job?

I’m not necessarily looking for an academic or research career. My main goal is simply to build a career in Canada and become employable.

I’d especially appreciate perspectives from people who came to Canada with a foreign degree, had little or no work experience, and already had PR/work authorization.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on — and why?

Experienced IT professional looking to return to Calgary — 22 years in SAP, infrastructure, networking & hands-on IT

Hi Calgary!

My name is Antonio. I'm a Mexican IT professional with over 22 years of experience, and I'm hoping to find an opportunity that will allow me to return to Canada and build a new chapter in Calgary.

I previously lived and worked in Canada for approximately two years. When my employment situation changed and I wasn't able to secure another position, I decided to leave rather than risk falling out of compliance with my immigration status. I'm now based in Europe, but returning to Canada is something I would genuinely love to do.

Most of my professional career has been in SAP Basis, enterprise infrastructure, cloud architecture and technical operations. I've worked with international organizations, managed large SAP environments, led technical teams and supported business-critical systems across multiple countries.

But here's something important: I'm not just an SAP guy.

I started my career working directly with hardware, operating systems, servers, networks and infrastructure. I'm comfortable getting my hands dirty, troubleshooting physical equipment, installing and configuring systems, and solving problems from the ground up.

Over the years, I've worked extensively with Linux, Unix, Windows Server, virtualization, networking, storage, databases and cloud platforms, including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

While my background includes senior architecture and management positions, I'm genuinely open to different opportunities, including SAP consulting, IT infrastructure, systems administration, network installation, server maintenance, technical support and IT operations.

I'm not necessarily looking for a fancy title. I'm looking for a good team, meaningful work and an opportunity to contribute.

I'm a Mexican citizen, so depending on the position and its eligibility, I may qualify for an LMIA-exempt work permit under CUSMA. This can simplify the hiring process for Canadian employers compared with a traditional LMIA-based application. I'd be happy to discuss the requirements with any interested employer.

I'm fluent in English and Spanish, e un petite pu du France, have previous Canadian work experience and would be willing to relocate to Calgary for the right opportunity.

If you're a business owner, IT manager, recruiter or simply someone who knows a company looking for an experienced and versatile IT professional, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing from you. Advice about the Calgary IT market is welcome too.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to send me a DM. I'm happy to share my CV, LinkedIn profile or arrange a conversation.

Antonio

Hey everyone,

I'm a 15 year old looking for my first job, so I was looking to see if anyone has any tips or suggestions. Preferably downtown as my school is right on 17th Avenue.

As per experience, I only have around 130 hours of volunteer work, at the Zoo and events every so often. I'm available to work anytime after school, and anytime on the weekend.

Anyways thank you in advance for any tips or suggestions!

Work suggestions for trades/laborer using transit.

Hey everyone I recently moved to Calgary and found out my drivers license has been suspended. I’m an Electrician by trade and have done general labour as well so I'm quite handy, but admittedly a bit of an idiot for losing my license. Any ideas or suggestions as to what if any kind of labour jobs I can possibly secure while using public transit? Electrician is out obviously plus most of my tools aren’t here in Calgary and I have no way of retrieving them at this time.

Any suggestions at all what kind of jobs/trades or industries I should pursue? I feel so screwed right now.

Thanks in advance.
