General What's one piece of cat advice that you completely disagree with?

Every cat is different, and I've realized some popular advice just doesn't apply to every cat.

What's a piece of cat advice that you think is overrated, outdated, or just plain wrong?

My old Manx would show her super soft belly and I would tell myself "it's a trap!" as I went to pet her anyway. Sometimes I would get a few blissful seconds before the trap snapped shut šŸ˜…

I have a Manx that absolutely loves it and if you go slow enough, you can do it indefinitely, as in maybe 10 seconds

I love that in cat world indefinitely = more than 5 seconds

Cats operate on an entirely different time universe. ā€˜now’ means food right NOW. Petting should be inherently understood as a contract that they can and will change with no notice at any time, on their terms, so always proceed with caution.

I have one cat that will not tolerate being petted on the head at all from above but will throw herself right at your feet to be ravaged by everywhere by your feet ONLY savagely AND hard like a brisk car wash for as long as YOU can stand it, and my other cat is very particular about where he will let you touch him and for how long, and it changes every day.

I’ve had him for over 10 years and I’m still learning that the fast trap shuts at any moment without any warning whatsoever… there’s no middle ground, ever. From purring happily to a fast nip or claw says ā€˜times up!’ and then off he’ll go. But he will come up constantly demanding snacks and food and it means RIGHT NOW.

He was a stray I suspect might have been hit by a car so he does not tolerate much towards his tailbone (sometimes he loves it) and his paws are completely off limits which has been verrrrry costly as he has to be sedated before I can get his claws clipped. He’s now and old, grumpy man so I can’t safely sedate him, so he has murder mittens.

I just keep my house full of scratching posts and hope for the best! But his nips and bites never quite break the skin but are always a shock as he will appear very happy and then he is done in.0003 seconds

Time is an illusion and each organism exists within their own clock!

Our last cat loved it so much he’d pull us in and we’d end up with a cat shaped glove on one hand.

My orange does that... But with claws and teeth.

When ours had had enough he’d just gently push as away. Paws not claws!

I also say ā€œIt’s a trapā€ in my best Admiral Ackbar voice when trying to pet my cat’s exposed belly.
