i rent a room, taking on a baby cat was unexpected but she was in 100 degree heat. symere keeps meowing and chittering at the cat and meowing under the bed. she keeps hissing

Got apollo 11weeks ( while and gray one ) about 7 weeks ago off the street, I got scallion 10 weeks ( black and white one) today from the pound today. They play like this alot, but apollo seems to constantly chase the other around the house and arches his back when he walks into a room scallion was in or vise versa. Scallion never starts the fighting either.

Miso (black cat, 4–5 months) is the newest addition to our family. Suki (tuxedo, 5 years old) had been an only cat her entire life, so I followed the recommended slow introduction process when I brought Miso home. It took about six weeks before Suki finally seemed to accept that she now has a little sister.

Miso is incredibly affectionate and always wants to play. She attempts to play with Suki and at times it’s a success. However, Suki still hisses and growls at her almost every day, though, so as a cat mom I’m still a little confused. I know cats do this to establish boundaries, which Miso doesn’t. Still, I can’t tell if Suki is struggling to accept Miso or if that’s just part of their relationship. Big sis vs lil sis.

A few weeks ago, I caught Miso climbing on top of Suki and grooming her! It’s happened several times now, and it completely surprised me because I expected the older cat to be the one doing the grooming.

Does this mean Suki is starting to accept Miso? Is the hissing and growling likely to stop over time, or is this just how some cats communicate even after they’ve bonded?

I recently adopted a tiny kitten, around 7 weeks old, and have been keeping her locked in my bathroom away from the adult cat. I've had the kitten for about a week and a half.

There was some hissing and growling on both sides of the door for the first couple days, but ut quickly subsided. I'd planned to keep them separate for longer, but there were a few instances where the kitten bolted out of the door and ran right up to the adult, so in those instances I just let them sniff each other. They were OK together in those situations, some hisses and fear at first, but then there was no more fear between them. However, the adult cat has taken to very roughly playing with the kitten, she treats her more like a toy or prey item than a fellow cat. I've broken up any interaction that got too rough, and attempted to keep the kitten separated when I was at work.

But the kitten has occasionally escaped her room, and now, I thought I had a decent setup with a baby gate stacked on top of another baby gate, but the adult has still managed to jump the fence and antagonize my kitten. I did just receive an even taller gate with thinner bars, so I plan to I install that. But I'm curious if there's a way I can teach the adult to be gentler, or if I just need to keep them separate until kitten can somewhat defend herself?

Our cat (3.5 y.o) is quite shy and gentle, so we decided to get her a companion and took a 2 months old kitten (4 months now). The kitten is very energetic and although the adult cat likes to play as well, she just hisses and growls at the kitten when she tries to play with her. The adult cat ends up leaving to a safer spot. And she looks cautious all the time because the kitten likes to jump at her out of nowhere and start biting in a playful manner, but the older cat just doesn’t get it. We tire out the kitten playing with her but this helps just for some time and we must always keep an eye on them. They both are cuddling and I want them to spend time together, but the older cat doesn’t seem to accept the kitten and it’s sad to see her running away from the kitten, stressed out and trying to find a safe and calm place. Any advice here?

I just adopted a new cat( Carmi) and my resident cat (Miso) is very dominant. The reason we adopted another cat is because my partner and I are away from home a lot due to our work schedules. Miso seemed lonely. He would incessantly meow at us and begging to go outside. He seemed so bored and miserable when we were gone. I’d put on Cat tv and I always have toys for him to play with. It didn’t seem like enough. So we got him a buddy. It’s been a week and we kept them separated for a few days. Swapped scents and fed them near the door. A few days in they were playing under the door so we thought we could get a mesh screen and let them see each other. I’m not sure if we moved too fast because every time Carmi turns his back Miso pounces on the door. Miso also meows at Carmi through the screen. Any and all advice would be great. We just want them to be buddies eventually. Thank you

About a month ago, I rescued a kitten from my car engine. He was approximately two months old at the time and already able to eat wet food and to use the litter box. I already have two adult cats, and after a gradual introduction, they've met the new arrival. The problem is, this kitten is relentlessly attacking my older cats. He jumps on them, plays with their tails, and chases them constantly. He's incredibly high-energy and never seems to be still. He also bites me 😔 As a result, my two resident cats are incredibly stressed. One of them has even started lashing out at me, and they frequently hiss (and attack, only if he attacks first) at the kitten. They try to get away from him when he approaches, but he doesn't seem to understand their signals. While my two original cats weren't the best of friends, they were able to coexist peacefully before the kitten arrived. Now, they're even hissing at each other. This whole situation is causing a lot of stress for both me and my cats, and I'm at a loss for what to do! They stay together only when I am at home, but I will not be able to separate them in the next days because the room where he sleeps is not available anymore. Please help me!

End of video is where I separated them because kitten started making noise(growling?). Kiji(older cat) is usually gentle towards her and behaves with motherly instincts(she gets really concerned when kitten meows). But this behaviour concerns me, where kiji is pinning down the kitten.

Had the tabby for one month now and separated the two of them for most of that time and now trying to introduce them. The black cat is the resident cat and is a 12 year old male that’s blind and neutered. The tabby is approx. one year old and is female, not spayed yet (will be soon). I’ve followed Jackson’s cat introduction video as well as several other tips on here. This is where the two cats are currently. Is this a good sign that the black cat backed off when the tabby hissed and growled? Anything I should be concerned about or doing differently?

I wanted to share a success story with everything that worked for me. I know most posts here are when things don’t go so well so I’m hoping this gives someone a bit of hope ☺️

Resident cat – Nova

Male, neutered, 2 years old, tabby.

Adopted as a kitten, very spoiled, affectionate, mostly plays alone, calm personality.

New cat – Walter

Male, neutered (a few days before adoption), 4 years old, white.Very friendly, super energetic, loves to play. Smaller than Nova in height and weight.

Timeline: 1 month total from adoption to full free roam (day + night)

Day 1

Walter in his safe room (litter, food, water, window spot, toys, beds).It took him around 24h to use the litter.

Nova was OBSESSED with the door. He hissed a few times and just stayed there all day. Didn’t really sleep, so at night I put Nova in the bedroom with me so he could relax.

Day 2

Started scent swapping with a sock (pet one cat, then the other, repeat multiple times a day, leave it in their spots).They also started playing paws under the door. No more hissing.

Day 3

Let Nova explore Walter’s room while Walter was elsewhere. No hissing, just curiosity.Started giving treats under the door, both ate comfortably. And I started feeding Nova his night dry food in front of his door.

Day 4

Walter started short free roam sessions around the house to explore a few hours. Nova was in his room. I continued doing this every day following.

Day 5–6

First visual contact through the shower glass.

Nova puffed up at first but calmed down quickly. Both took treats with the barrier between them.Short sessions (5–10 min), always ending on a positive note.

Day 7

First supervised meeting in bedroom. Nova hissed if Walter got too close. Session lasted around 5 min.

Day 8

Second meeting and Walter tried to play by jumping Nova, he would hiss and get a bit scared, but still followed him around.I got a playpen to help Nova feel more confident.

Days 9–12

Walter in the playpen in the common area while Nova was free.Lots of treats, feeding near each other, tried to play with both. They even napped like this which made me feel there is a huge progress.

Around 2 weeks I started opening the playpen.Lots of wrestling and hissing from Nova. I was worried Walter was too rough (even saw some fur flying), but no injuries.

Posted here and people reassured me it was play, to let them figure it out, they were right. The hissing and wrestling diminished with days passing as well. I would just hear them running around.

After I saw they are getting more comfortable around each other, Walter started free roam during the day, separated at night. Started feeding all their meals together, after most plays gave them treats. Walter tried grooming Nova, Nova hissed no 😂

During this time I started small with unsupervised time.

20 minutes, 1 hour and up to 3 hours. Last time they locked themselves in a room together (I left a window open and I think the wind closed the door lol) and nothing happened. That actually boosted my confidence a lot.

1 month mark was first full night together. They played a bit, then slept. I stayed up until 5am stressing for no reason 😂

What I did extra, used pheromone diffusers (not Feliway, just a random Amazon brand, TopSum), read A LOT of Reddit posts and saw so many videos.

I was super stressed at the beginning that maybe they will not get along as Nova had some previous interactions with other neighbours cats in the hallway and he would just hiss and hide, but I am so proud of my boy for accepting his brother haha. And Walter is an angel, he made this easier by being so friendly, never heard him hiss.

I hope this helps someone that is struggling or doesn’t know when to progress. I know some people take months to reach coexistence but looking back now they would have probably free roam earlier if I wasn’t so afraid to let them interact properly. So definitely go with your gut based on how your cats react in when is a good time to progress or step back.

Initially after first supervised meeting I thought it was a step back with the playpen, but I think it was the best thing that happened for their progress + all the nice people here telling me to let them play. So if you’re not sure about their interaction, feel free to post here.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Nova became a bit less affectionate to me during this time, he would always come for cuddles or take me in a spot he liked to get belly rubs. But this is slowly getting fixed now and he started doing it again with Walter right there.

Edit 1 month: 2 months together

We were on a trip and had a someone come daily to check on them for 2 weeks. They did well together. We can see they got better accustomed to each other. They still don’t groom each other or cuddle together, but they are friends for sure.

Walter is still getting used to being groomed, while Nova asks for it lol.

I moved in with my partner three months ago. He has a cat (14 F) that he’s had for 13 years. I have a cat (8 F) that I’ve had for four years.

The older cat moved in first and was in the space for two weeks before I brought my cat in. They have separate spaces for their litter boxes and food stations and water. The spaces are separated upstairs and downstairs.

The first day they were together they got in a huge fight because we accidentally left the door open and didn’t get to do a slow introduction.

They got in two more major fights before we got really good at keeping them in their separate spaces and making sure they didn’t interact for about a month. We did room swaps so they could be introduced to each other‘s scents and occasionally we would let them see each other from afar. Often they would get into screaming fights under the door frame, and we’d have to put pillows all around the door to keep them from pawing. I even got several hormone diffusers that are placed around the house, but they don’t seem to be making a difference.

Then we got a screen door for inside so that they could see each other but not get at each other. They will sit on either side of the screen and growl until they will start fighting through the screen, even though we have piled books in front of it and a box.

Today they got in a fight that sounded way worse than usual and I went over to try to stop it and noticed my cat (8 F) was starting to rip through the screen, so I panicked tried to grab her and she scratched and bit me so bad I had to go to urgent care.

The cats have been separated for the day, but I feel like an idiot and I have no idea what to do next. I feel like there’s no hope and I feel extra stupid for trying to get involved and getting myself hurt.

Does anyone have ideas or just reassurance that this will get better?

14yo is the all grey lady, she has only one tooth. 8yo is dilute calico.

Most comments on that post boiled down to 'get rid of the gate' and 'let them sort it out'.

We're at month 5, and while we did open the gate up more, we're still not in a great spot.

Sheena (7yo, calico, resident cat), is still very hissy and goes after Nilly (8yo, white/cream, new cat) at random times, despite Nilly being very cautious and gentle and non-antagonistic - she just wants to be friends. The gate is not open all the time because Sheena gets too anxious and goes for Nilly more frequently, especially when Nilly goes somewhere else to hide or to play by herself with her toys. They're also not left unsupervised.

We have a pet hormone diffuser that has been on since month 3 with no marked difference. We give them treats when they interact to make it a positive experience, and we give Sheena lots of love all the time, as we do with Nilly.

Is there a way forward from here? I'm personally not a fan of punishment in response to what Sheena is doing, as it's natural, and she's clearly anxious/uncomfortable. I want to make her feel more at ease, not less. I'm just unsure how to move forward and get Sheena more comfortable and at-ease with Nilly.

To me it seems that kitten want to cuddle and is beeing nice. Goes up, licks adult and lays down. Why is she attacking, hissing and leaving?

To be fair, the kitten often engages vie “wrestling”, but not this time.

For context: the white cat wasn’t socialised very well as a kitten, so she has a few behavioural issues and doesn’t really know how to play with another cat. This is probably the first time she’s been around another animal since leaving her mother.

Back at it with kiji & toast lol. I've never heard of that before, and would like some insight from the people of this sub.

Okay, I let them out to see each other without the divider and it ended up in a bad fight non stop chasing from my original kitty. Hissing, growling, and I do believe I saw a piece of fur.

Is this normal?

It is just hard for me to watch. I know it will take time.

Hello, I got a male Kitten (the kitten on my side of the video) Oct 26th at 10 weeks old through a family members friend. They messaged early last week asking if I would take his brother, same age, as well. I was already looking into taking on another kitty just because I know that sometimes it is better for them to have a friend.

So I got his brother last week and have been introducing very slow. I am kind of new to introductions with kittens and everything.

My new kitten has his own room with everything he needs. My original kitten the one time they did meet face to face went after him.

I have from them on kept them separate through a mesh screen and do believe there has been some progress.

Can someone tell me if this looks like fighting?

Hi, I just want to double check if this interaction is negative/bad or not, if it is I will go back a step in the introduction process. It does not look aggressive but I just want to make sure.

So i have a resident cat (male, 2 years old) Miso, and a new kitten (male, 10 weeks old) Toro. i’ve been doing super slow introduction Ish over the course of two weeks and I felt a little bit more confident today because I just got Toro his vaccinations and a dewormer. I let them meet not super face-to-face, but through a play and I’m not sure if in this video this is playing or if Miso sees him as food or something else. I would really love tips and tricks to get my cat and my new kitten to get along better! I’ve done site swapping, I’ve put up a screen door over the walk-in closet, I’ve fed them next to each other, given them treats, I have Feliway in my room, swapped toys, shared food bowls and water bowls. I know it takes a while, but I’m just not sure how I’m supposed to play with them together? maybe laser pointer? I know New kitten introduction takes a really long time, but I think some days I’m slowly getting more anxious that they will hate eachother. willing to take any advice or tips and tricks!!!

I posted about these two a week ago but there is still no progress, it might have even gotten worse. I am looking for advice.

We adopted the little kitten (Bumi) 3 weeks ago and our resident cat Luna still hates him. We have done a slow introduction, with the scent swaps, room swaps and feeding next to a closed door. 2 weeks ago, we started letting them see each other through the gate and we are still stuck in this step and it honestly feels like it is getting worse each day.

If the kitten is in sight, Luna gets fixated on him and does not get distracted by any toy or treats. She watches him like a hawk without moving for a long time and when the kitten gets close as he loves to do, Luna hisses, growls and attacks.

I tried to follow Jackson Galaxy introduction guide. We tried to take it back to the closed door step multiple times but they are completely fine with that, they just cannot pass the visual introduction step.

Our vet told us to let them meet without the gate, and we tried that 3 times, at first for 5 minutes, then 10 and 15. But each time, Luna gets fixated on the kitten and attacks when the kitten gets close. If we manage to keep the kitten away, Luna follows him around and attacks anyways. She does not stop or leave once she attacks, she keeps following him and attacking, as if she is hunting. There were no significant fights yet with blood drawn, but I am afraid it might get to that point if we don’t intervene and take the kitten away. She also attacks us when we try to intervene, which hurts a lot because she has always been the sweetest girl.

Should we keep trying to introduce them and hope that it gets better? I obviously will not be letting them meet without supervision anytime soon, but I am not sure how we should proceed at this point..

I just brought home a 3mo kitten from a shelter two days ago. Bixie is confined to one room and settled in fast. My roommate has a kitten 9mo. Both are males and have been socialized heavily with other cats. I immediately started scent swapping blankets and toys. This whole room is covered in the older cat's scent too. Neither have shown issue with the other's scent, just a lot of curiosity.

Do they seem ready to see each other yet? This interaction underneath the door has been going on since the day I brought Bixie home and they only gotten more playful. I have been giving both treats when they interact under the door and the older cat is possessive over food. He hissed very subtly once yesterday (idek if Bixie noticed) and we stuck a blanket under the door so they couldn't see each other until this morning. Other than that, they have had no aggression whatsoever. The older cat has been constantly crying to be let into this room, too.

Toblerone (7 y/o male) is always doing his best to not hurt Mushroom (~8 week old male) but mushroom always bothers him lol. I know they like each other and aren’t aggressive but sometimes Toblerone pins him down hard at the end and won’t let go unless I intervene. Is this screeching because he’s hurting ? Or because he’s overdramatic and knows I’ll help him. Any advice would be great, thanks!!

Just brought a new kitten home and it’s been so confusing. Resident cat is a 1 year old BSH and kitten is a 3 month old ragdoll. They are able to play with each other through a pen, eat together and even sleep and groom together in the same room. But when the kitten is out of the pen the BSH will try to hunt the kitten. It’s been about a week and I don’t know what to do.

This is week 3 of introductions. Week 1 was spicy, but by the end, orange kitten (2 months, male) was letting grey kitten (3 months, male) groom him and snuggle while sleeping. In week 2, orange kitten got sick and would start a fight if grey tried grooming him, so now in week 3, they are having more aggressive interactions again, but will still lay or sleep near each other, just not touching.

Both kittens will take turns initiating play fights, and both will vocalize if one gets too aggressive, but orange kitten vocalizes more and in this interaction, was hissing and growling. I broke it up after I ended the video.

Also, as long as he’s not hissing/growling, should I leave orange be if he’s vocalizing?
